In order to estimate daily ration of juvenile Potamoschistus lozanoi and to evaluate the effect of tide and daylight on its feeding activity, two 24h samplings were performed, one (in 1985) with high water around midnight, the other (in 1986) with low water around midnight. Incidently, the sampling in 1985 was around neap tide and in 1986 it was around spring tide. The fish were observed to feed more intensively during the night. Daily ration in 1985 was estimated to be about 1% of body ash-free dry weight (ADW). For 1986, the estimate is about 5% of body ADW in spite of similar water temperatures at both sampling dates. It is suggested that a semilunar rhythm, either in the fish or in the invertebrate prey, is the basis of the observed... |

A survey of the actual brackish-water malacofauna of Belgium is presented. Two regions have been investigated: a) the coastal area and b) the Belgian part of the Western Scheldt, downstreams of Antwerp. The following species were recorded: Hydrobia ulvae, Hydrobia ventrosa, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, Assiminea grayana, Alderia modesta, Limapontia depressa, Ovatella myosotis, Leucophytia bidentata and Cerastoderma glaucum. Tergipes tergipes, Tenellia adspersa and Eubranchus sp., three species which are known from literature, could not be rediscovered during the present investigation. On the other hand, a current revision of Hydrobia ventrosa from the collections of... |

This study shows that the principal ecological factors influencing the studied area are light, determined by very unequal day lengths, the wind, provoking a fairly homogenically mixed layer of microscopic organisms, and water depth, which in correlation with the proximity of the coast line determined the nutrient salinity concentration. The floral study allowed the determination of algal concentration in the different zones during different periods of the year, and also the quantitative and qualitative photosynthetic activity fluctuations of several florules. The study also resulted in a zonal and chronological delimitation of a large number of species of the studied area. The degressive lists, based on the mean algal frequency, showed the... |
