Chromosomal aberrations in peripheral lymphocytes from male native miners working in the Peruvian Andes Genet. Mol. Biol.
Santa Maria,Sergio R.; Arana,Margarita; Ramirez,Oswaldo.
We analyzed the frequency of chromosomal aberrations in peripheral lymphocytes from underground miners from the Casapalca (n = 8, mean age = 45 y, range = 36 y to 55 y) and Bellavista (n = 8, mean age = 28 y, range 23 y to 34 y) high-altitude mining camps in the Peruvian Andes. This population was occupationally exposed to heavy metals such as lead and zinc as well as diesel emission particles, organic solvents and mine dust. The control groups consisted of individuals from a high altitude farming community in the Peruvian village of Tinco (n = 8, mean age = 37 y, range = 25 y to 52 y) and the sea level city of Lima (n = 14, mean age = 26 y, range = 20 y to 35 y). All individuals were male native Peruvians. A significantly higher incidence (1.88%, p <...

Effect of High Altitude Hypoxia on the Postnatal Development of Rat Testis: Histological and Histometric Study International Journal of Morphology
Mohammed,Heitham Mutwakil; Tingari,M. D.
The study was carried out at two different altitudes in the southern region of Saudi Arabia: Abha, 2,800 meters above sea level, the high altitude (HA) area and Jazan, 40 meters above sea level the low altitude (LA) area. Following exposure to high altitude, and up to the third week of postnatal development, some of the seminiferous tubules showed detachment from the basal lamina, spaces of different sizes within the epithelial layer with vacuoles in the center and Pyknotic nuclei were noted in the spermatogonia and primordial germ cells. Rounded spermatids were seen in the lumen only on day 35 of hypoxic group, no spermatozoa were recognized until day 45 of postnatal development. On day 45 hypoxic rat testes revealed various types of atrophy and...

Reversible Effect of High Altitude on Rat Testis Morphology and Spermatogenesis: Histological and Ultrastructural Study International Journal of Morphology
Abdalla,Asim M; Tingari,M. D; Ali,K. Z; Rezigalla,A. A; Al-shraim,Mubarak; Eid,Refaat, A.
The study was carried out at two different altitudes in the southern region of Saudi Arabia: Abha, 2,800 meters above sea level, the high altitude (HA) area and Jazan, 40 meters above sea level the low altitude (LA) area. Following exposure to high altitude, testes of rats revealed various types of atrophy and degeneration in the seminiferous tubules and in the interstitial tissue. There was detachment of the basal laminae of the tubules and a profound decrease in cellularity. When rats were brought back to their habitat (LA) and later examined, many tubules showed normal population of cells including spermatids and spermatozoa. Well-arranged epithelium was seen in most of the seminiferous tubules of these animals, normal interstitial space and no...

The Relationship of Birth Weight, Body Shape and Body Composition at Birth to Altitude in Saudi Arabia International Journal of Morphology
Khalid,Mohammed Elhabib Mohammed; Ahmed,Humeda Sweket; Osman,Osama Mirghani; Al Hashem,Fahaid Hassan.
The objective of this work was to study the effect of high altitude on full term birth weight, body shape and body composition of newborn infants. Twenty five healthy pregnant Saudi women and their healthy newborns from high altitude (2850-3150 m) and equal numbers from low altitude (500 m). For each pregnant woman haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit value and blood pressures were measured and recorded immediately after admission to hospital for delivery. Fetal haemoglobin concentration and haematocrit value were determined immediately after delivery. Determination of the newborn's body shape and composition were made from anthropometric measurements which were performed two hours after delivery. Placental weight was determined immediately after its...

Yield and must composition of grapevines subjected to phosphate fertilization in Southern Brazil PAB
Schmitt,Djalma Eugênio; Borghezan,Marcelo; Ambrosini,Vítor Gabriel; Comin,Jucinei José; Trapp,Talita; Brunetto,Gustavo.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the yield and must composition of 'Cabernet Sauvignon' and 'Chardonnay' grapevines subjected to phosphorus applications to a soil from a high-altitude region of Southern Brazil, during three crop seasons. Experiments 1 and 2 were carried out in 'Cabernet Sauvignon' and 'Chardonnay' commercial vineyards, respectively, in the municipality of Água Doce, located in the Midwestern region of the state of Santa Catarina. The soil from the two vineyards was classified as a Typic Humicryept. The used source of P was triple superphosphate (45% P2O5). From 2011 to 2013, at flowering, a total of 0, 10, 20, 40, and 80 kg ha-1 P2O5 were applied in the crown projection area, to the soil surface, without incorporation,...

Lipid Peroxidation in the Plasma, Lungs, Heart and Liver of Broilers Fed a Grape Seed Extract and Raised at 2278 m of Altitude Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Rodríguez-Ortega,LT; Juárez-Juárez,G; Pro-Martínez,A; Sosa-Montes,E; Bautista-Ortega,J; González-Cerón,F; Vargas-Galicia,AJ; Chan-Díaz,D; Moreno-Medina,D; Gallegos-Sánchez,J; Rodríguez-Ortega,A.
ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of partial substitution of vitamin E (VE) by grape seed extract (GSE) on glutathione peroxidase activity (GPxA), nitric oxide (NO) concentration and lipid peroxidation [malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration] in the plasma, lungs, heart and liver, and live performance of broilers raised at 2278 m of altitude. One-d-old Ross 308 male chickens (n = 420) were randomly distributed into three treatments: Control-AL (basal diet containing 40 IU of VE and fed ad libitum; AL), Control-FR (basal diet and feed restriction; FR) and GSE-AL [basal diet containing 10 mg of GSE (equivalent to 30 IU VE) plus 10 IU of VE and fed AL]. The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance. Glutathione peroxidase...
