Determinants of Use of Government Export Promotion Programs by Agribusiness Firms AgEcon

The Foreign Agricultural Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has been criticized because it appears to favor allocation of Market Promotion Program (MPP) funds to large firms. Because of competition for markets, the USDA has been admonished to devote more attention to export promotion, especially to small firms at the state level. This paper determines that North Carolina providers of export promotion services must place greater emphasis on dissemination information and providing technical assistance to change attitudes toward exporting and export promotion. Rising incomes, urbanization and globalization have been leading to profound changes in the consumption habits of an increasing number of people in developing and transition countries, particularly in Asia. These changes are linked to increasing concerns that small-scale farmers are becoming marginalized in new market set-ups. On the back-ground of these developments we analyze how growing demand for indigenous pork – considered a specialty product among consumers in Vietnam – impacts through newly emerging supply chains on small-scale farmers in upland areas. High-Value Agricultural Products of the Fiji Islands – Performance and Prospects AgEcon

This paper analyses the performance of high-value agricultural products of Fiji Islands in terms of their production and exports during 1975-2004. Problems and key issues affecting this are discussed. The performance of agriculture was poor for traditional, semi- and highly processed products during 1975-2004. Primary products, such as copra declined by 51 percent, paddy rice by 27 percent, cocoa by 91 percent, and beef by 7 percent. Sugarcane production increased only by 12 percent in three decades. There was a substantial increase in pork, chicken, eggs, and fish production. Production of processed products, such as sugar and coconut oil decreased during the period.
