Comparative transcriptome analysis of the hippocampus from sleep-deprived and Alzheimer’s disease mice Genet. Mol. Biol.
Wei,Yi.
Abstract We did a comparative analysis of the gene expression profiles of the hippocampus from sleep deprivation and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) mice. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified by comparing the transcriptome profiles of the hippocampus of sleep deprivation or AD mouse models to matched controls. The common DEGs between sleep deprivation and AD were identified by the overlapping analysis, followed by Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses. The results showed that a total of 16 common DEGs showed similar change patterns in both sleep deprivation mice and AD mice. Sgk1, Ly6a, Atp6v0e, Hspb8, Htra1, Pdk4, Pfkfb3, Golm1, and Plin3 were up-regulated in the two disorders, whereas, Marcksl1, Fgd1,...

Gamma Radiation-induced Impairment of Hippocampal Neurogenesis,Comparison of Single and Fractionated Dose Regimens International Journal of Morphology
Khoshbin khoshnazar,A. R; Jahanshahi,M; Azami,N. S.
Radiation therapy of the brain is associated with many consequences, including cognitive disorders. Pathogenesis of radiation induced cognitive disorder is not clear, but reduction of neurogenesis in hippocampus may be an underlying reason. 24 adult male rats entered to study. Radiation absorbed dose to midbrain was 10 Gy, delivered by routine cobalt radiotherapy machine which its output was measured 115.24 cGy/min. The rats were divided in four groups of sixes, including groups of control, single fraction 10 Gy, fractionated 10 Gy and finally anaesthesia sham group. Number of pyramidal nerve cells was counted in two regions of hippocampus formation (CA1 and CA3). The radiation could reduce the number of cells in two regions of hippocampus significantly...

Khan,Aaijaz Ahmed; Ramli,Norhida Binti; Ismail,Zulizhar Mohd.
Hypoxia-ischemia (HI) is a major cause of brain damage in the newborn. Several studies elicited the neuroprotective effects of progesterone in adult rats but there is very little literature available on neonatal rats. Therefore the present study is undertaken to see the effect of progesterone in hypoxic ischemic brain injury in neonatal rats, using an established neonatal HI rat pup model. Seven-day-old rat pups were subjected to right common carotid artery ligation and then 60 minutes hypoxia. The first dose of progesterone to treatment group was administered by peritoneal injection (4 mg/kg), after 10 minutes of exposure and subsequent doses were given by subcutaneous injection at 6 h, 24 h and 48 h intervals. Control group was also exposed to HI and was...

Kafa,Ilker M; Ari,Ilknur; Kurt,M. Ayberk.
Approximately, half of the patients with progressive sepsis develop encephalopathy, but there is scarce knowledge onto question that how the sepsis associated encephalopathy contributes brain dysfunction. Hippocampus is one of the most vulnerable regions during experimental sepsis. In the present study, effects of sepsis on the neuronal density and morphology in CA1, CA3 and DG areas were investigated in a rat model of intraperitoneal sepsis. Twenty-four Wistar rats were divided into three different groups: faecal peritonitis group, sham-operated and un-operated control groups. Pyramidal neuron volume density was significantly higher in CA1 area of the faecal peritonitis group compared to both un-operated (p<0.05) and sham-operated (p<0.05) groups....

Effect of Scopolamine-based Amnesia on the Number of Astrocytes in the Rat's Hippocampus International Journal of Morphology
Jahanshahi,M; Azami,N. S; Nickmahzar,E.
As neuronastrocyte interactions play a crucial role in the adult brain, it is thought that astrocytes support learning and memory through specific mechanisms. In this study, the effect of scopolamine based amnesia on the number of astrocytes in rats' hippocampus was studied. Adult male albino Wistar rats were bilaterally cannulated into the CA1 region and animals received saline or different doses of scopolamine (0.5, 1 and 2 mg/ rat, intra - CA1), immediately after training. Then all the rats were sacrificed and coronal sections were taken from the dorsal hippocampal formation of the right cerebral hemispheres and stained with PTAH. The area densities of the astrocytes in dentate gyrus were measured and compared in the all groups (p < 0.05). Data...

Convulsive effects of some isolated venom fractions of the Tityus serrulatus scorpion: behavioral, electroencephalographic, and neuropathological aspects J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
CARVALHO,F. F.; NENCIONI,A. L. A.; LEBRUN,I.; DORCE,V. A. C.; SANDOVAL,M. R. L..
It has been previously shown that the crude venom of Tityus serrulatus can cause convulsions. This study was designed to investigate the neurotoxic effects of B, C, G, and K fractions isolated from this venom. Intravenous injection of these fractions in mice (0.6 - 6.0 mg/kg body weight) showed that the C fraction is a potent convulsant and G fraction decreased the threshold for tonic hand limb extension elicited by transauricular electroshock. Unilateral injection of B, C, and K fractions, but not G fraction, into the hippocampus of rats (0.6 - 6.0 µg) caused electroencephalographic alterations consisting of spikes and epileptic discharges that began in the hippocampus and evolved to the cortex. The following motor signs were observed: movements of facial...

Neurotransmitter evaluation in the hippocampus of rats after intracerebral injection of TsTX scorpion toxin J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Nencioni,ALA; Barreto,SA; Lebrun,I; Florio,JC; Lourenço,GA; Dorce,VAC.
TsTX is an α-type sodium channel toxin that stimulates the discharge of neurotransmitters from neurons. In the present study we investigated which neurotransmitters are released in the hippocampus after TsTX injection and if they are responsible for electrographic or histopathological effects. Microdialysis revealed that the toxin increased glutamate extracellular levels in the hippocampus; however, levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glycine, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), homovanillic acid (HVA) and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) were not significantly altered. Neurodegeneration in pyramidal cells of hippocampus and electroencephalographic alterations caused by the toxin were blocked by pretreatment with riluzole, a glutamate release...

Collaborative monitoring of the ornamental trade of seahorses and pipefishes (Teleostei: Syngnathidae) in Brazil: Bahia State as a case study Neotropical Ichthyology
Rosa,Ierecê L.; Sampaio,Cláudio L. S.; Barros,Adrianne T..
Many species of seahorses and pipefishes (family Syngnathidae) are traded for medicinal purposes and aquaria; some are also sold as souvenirs or curiosities. Brazil is one of the main suppliers of seahorses for the international aquarium trade, nevertheless, little is known about the magnitude of that trade in the country. With regards to pipefishes, virtually nothing is known about their captures for ornamental purposes in Brazil. The present study assesses the magnitude of captures and trade of seahorses and pipefishes, based on data obtained through a collaborative monitoring program established with the main retailer of marine ornamental organisms in the State of Bahia. The syngnathid fishery is conducted in shallow waters never exceeding 7 m,...

A link between the hippocampal and the striatal memory systems of the brain Anais da ABC (AABC)
Rossato,Janine I.; Zinn,Carolina G.; Furini,Cristiane; Bevilaqua,Lia R.M.; Medina,Jorge H.; Cammarota,Martín; Izquierdo,Iván.
Two major memory systems have been recognized over the years (Squire 1987): the declarative memory system, which is under the control of the hippocampus and related temporal lobe structures, and the procedural or habit memory system, which is under the control of the striatum and its connections. Most if not all learning tasks studied in animals, however, involve either the performance or the suppression of movement; this, if learned well, may be viewed as having become a habit. It is agreed that memory rules change from their first association to those that take place when the task is mastered. Does this change of rules involve a switch from one memory system to another? Here we will comment on: 1) reversal learning in the Morris water maze (MWM), in...

Consequences of gestational diabetes to the brain and behavior of the offspring Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOUSA,RICARDO A.L. DE; TORRES,YASMIN S.; FIGUEIREDO,CLAUDIA P.; PASSOS,GISELLE F.; CLARKE,JULIA R..
ABSTRACT Gestational diabetes mellitus (GD) is a form of insulin resistance triggered during the second/third trimesters of pregnancy in previously normoglycemic women. It is currently estimated that 10% of all pregnancies in the United States show this condition. For many years, the transient nature of GD has led researchers and physicians to assume that long-term consequences were absent. However, GD diagnosis leads to a six-fold increase in the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) in women and incidence of obesity and T2D is also higher among their infants. Recent and concerning evidences point to detrimental effects of GD on the behavior and cognition of the offspring, which often persist until adolescence or adulthood. Considering that the...
