Charles Chilton: the Phreatoicoidea and other interests of a phreatic pioneer from down under Naturalis
Hurley, D.E..
Besides his widespread activities in zoology and university development, Charles Chilton (1860—1929) was a pioneer in phreatic research who opened up the possibilities of the new science in the Southern Hemisphere. He described phreatic and subterranean species of Isopoda and Amphipoda from New Zealand, Australia and elsewhere and discussed the significance of their morphology and habitat. His finds included the first species of the widespread endemic Southern Hemisphere group, the Phreatoicoidea, and he pointed to Gondwanaland connections in this and other groups which he accepted and interpreted in the context of his time.

Discovery of scientific correspondence of P.P.C. Hoek (1851—1914), including three unpublished letters by Charles Darwin Naturalis
Pieters, Florence F.J.M.; Winthagen, Diny.
Recently the scientific correspondence of the Dutch zoologist P.P.C. Hoek (1851—1914) turned up in the Artis Library. This collection contains three hitherto unpublished letters from Charles Darwin. It appears that Charles Darwin recommended Hoek to the favour of Sir Charles Wyville Thomson upon Hoek’s request for duplicates of Pycnogonida collected by the Challenger Expedition. This led to Hoek’s participation in the publication of the scientific results of the Challenger Expedition. Hoek’s report on the Pycnogonida was published in 1881 and those on the Cirripedia in 1883 (Systematic Part) and 1884 (Anatomical Part). In a letter to Hoek dated November 23, 1881 Charles Darwin praises Hoek’s contribution on the Pycnogonida as a magnificent piece of work...

Notes on a drawing of Indian elephants in red crayon by Petrus Camper (1786) in the archives of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van; Pieters, F.F.J.M..
A drawing of two Indian elephants, signed "P. Camper f. 10 Sept. 1786", in red chalk or crayon, was found in the archives of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in a manuscript by T.G. van Lidth de Jeude (1788-1863). Van Lidth de Jeude, professor at Utrecht university, obviously intended to use it as an illustration in his projected manual of the mammals in Dutch. The drawing is almost completely identical to an unsigned drawing in the Artis library, one of a series of three. The Leiden drawing is traced back to H. Schlegel, director of the Leiden museum 1858-1884, who most probably obtained the Van Lidth de Jeude papers upon his death. Van Lidth de Jeude is likely to have acquired the Camper drawing from G.J. van Klinkenberg (1768/69-1841), who in...

In memorium Dr. Agatha Gijzen (1904-1995), eminent museum historian and zoo biologist Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van.
Dr Agatha Gijzen (Rotterdam *9 October 1904, Merksem/Belgium †19 February 1995) was a remarkable zoologist in more than one respect. Although her professional career, spanning more than three and a half decades, was largely spent as a staff zoologist in the service of the famous Antwerp/ Planckendael zoological gardens complex in Belgium (1947-1974), she had already made her name as a zoologist/historian by obtaining her Ph.D. degree in 1938 on an extensive first study of the history of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden, the national museum of natural history of The Netherlands. She properly organized the archives of the museum for the very first time and her published doctoral thesis (unfortunately only available in Dutch; summary in...
