Nonpreference of the lace bug Leptopharsa heveae Drake & Poor (Heteroptera: Tingidae) for rubber tree clones Anais da SEB
Lara,Fernando M.; Tanzini,Marcel R..
To determine the resistance of rubber tree clones (Hevea brasiliensis) to Leptopharsa heveae Drake and Poor (Heteroptera: Tingidae) a trial was held in Itiquira, MT, in 1994/95 by comparing the following clones: AVROS 2037, Fx 4037, GT 1, HARBEL, IAC 207, IAN 4493, IAN 717, IAN 873, RO 38, and RO 46. Free choice and no choice trials involving preference for oviposition and feeding were carried out under field and laboratory conditions. The symptoms caused by the insects, number of excrements, number of eggs/female/leaflet, mortality rate, and number of insects/leaflet were scored. The results showed that clones Fx 4037, RO 38 and RO 46 were resistant by nonpreference for feeding and oviposition, whereas GT and IAN 873 were the most susceptible.

Seleção de introduções do gênero Brachiaria (Griseb) resistentes à cigarrinha Zulia entreriana (Berg) (Homoptera: Cercopidae) Anais da SEB
Valério,José R.; Jeller,Helma; Peixer,Janice.
Spittlebugs are the most damaging pasture pests in tropical America where extensive monocultures of Brachiaria decumbens cv. Basilisk have favoured the buildup of spittlebug populations. Under severe spittlebug attack, the entire above-ground portion of the plant appears dry and dead, reducing the stocking rates of damaged pastures. Host plant resistance is a low-cost method of controlling spittlebugs, which farmers can easily adopt. High level of spittlebug resistance is found in the cultivar B. brizantha cv. Marandu, but it requires more fertile soils. A Brachiaria germplasm provided by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture and available at the National Center for Beef Cattle Research (CNPGC) has been screened for spittlebug resistance. In...

To determine the evaluation period of preference of the greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rond.) to sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) genotypes, a study was conducted at the Embrapa/National Corn and Sorghum Research Center, Sete Lagoas, MG, using different sources of resistance. Cultivars were randomized within pots and 11-d after planting five apterous adult greenbugs/plant were released in the center of the pot. Evaluations based on the number of insects in each genotype, after 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours of the insects release indicated that 72 hours after infestation was the ideal period to evaluate the non-preference of S. graminum to sorghum.

Santos,Thais Lohaine Braga dos; Baldin,Edson Luiz Lopes; Ribeiro,Leandro do Prado; Souza,Camila Moreira de; Bueno,Nádia Maebara; Silva,Ivana Fernandes da.
ABSTRACT The silverleaf whitefly Bemisia tabaci biotype B is one of the most important sucking pests of common bean, which causes severe damages and requires frequently synthetic insecticides spraying to protect crop productivity. The use of common bean cultivars resistant to whitefly attack is an important strategy within an integrated pest management (IPM) program. The biological development of B. tabaci confined to 17 bean genotypes was evaluated in greenhouse trials to verify the occurrence of antibiosis. Whitefly adults were released on plants of these genotypes to oviposit, afterward the incubation period of eggs, nymphal period, complete development period (egg–adult), and viability of the silverleaf whitefly nymphs were recorded. As main results,...

Canassa,Vinícius Fernandes; Baldin,Edson Luiz Lopes; Bentivenha,José Paulo Franco; Pannuti,Luiz Eduardo da Rocha; Lourenção,André Luiz.
ABSTRACT Some species of pentatomids stink bugs have global economic importance, damaging various plant species during the vegetative and reproductive phases. Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), known as the green-belly stink bug, is part of the soybean stink bug complex in Brazil and has increasing importance in crops, with potential to reduce crop yield. This polyphagous stink bug has been registered in 29 plant species belonging to 10 plant families which include cultivated and non-cultivated plants. Plant resistance is a valuable tool in integrated pest management and may reduce insect populations below economic injury level. This study characterized the resistance of 17 soybean genotypes to the green-belly stink bug. All of the...

Gonçalves Franco da Silva,José Paulo; Lopes Baldin,Edson Luiz; Santana de Souza,Efrain; Lourenção,André Luiz.
Since it was first reported in Brazil in the 1990s, the B biotype of silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Genn., Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) has been recognized as an important pest in soybeans (Glycine max L.), reducing the productivity of this legume species in some areas of the country. As an alternative to chemical control, the use of resistant genotypes represents an important tool for integrated pest management (IPM). This study evaluated the performance of 10 soybean genotypes prior to whitefly infestation, by testing attractiveness and preference for oviposition in the greenhouse and antibiosis in the laboratory. In a multiple-choice test, 'IAC-17' was the least attractive to insects. In a no-choice test, 'IAC-17' was the least attractive for egg...

Resistance of melon cultivars to Bemisia tabaci biotype B Horticultura Brasileira
Baldin,Edson LL; da Silva,José Paulo GF; Pannuti,Luiz Eduardo R.
The silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia tabaci biotype B, is currently one of the most important pests of melon, causing direct and indirect damage to plants, and significantly reducing production in the field. Due to the need for alternative methods of chemical control in melon crops, the melon cultivars AF-646, AF-682, Don Luis, Frevo, Jangada, Nilo, Vereda, Amarelo Ouro and Hales Best were assessed at field, greenhouse, and laboratory trials for resistance to whitefly B. tabaci biotype B. In general, 'Hales Best' and 'Amarelo Ouro' were the most resistant, showing oviposition non-preference against whitefly. The trichome density is associated with the variation in oviposition on the cultivars and should be further investigated in future work. These results may...

Resistance of squash cultivars to Aphis gossypii Horticultura Brasileira
Baldin,Edson LL; Marchi,Lia S; Schlick,Eunice C.
The Cucurbitaceae plants are damaged by attack of a wide spectrum of insects and microorganisms. Among the sucker insects causing damages on squash Cucurbita pepo (L.), the aphid Aphis gossypii (Glover) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is pointed as one of the most important, once their nymphs and adults suck the sap of the leaves continuously, besides being potential vector of virus. The present research evaluated different cultivars, aiming to identify the resistance against this aphid. The cultivars Novita, Sandy, Caserta Cac Melhorada, Novita Plus, Samira, AF-2858 and Caserta TS were used in laboratory assays (T= 25±2ºC; RH= 70±10% and fotophase= 12 h). In the immature phase the duration of nymphal instars was evaluated, the total duration and their viability,...

Lourenção,André L; Reco,Paulo C; Braga,Nelson R; Valle,Giuliana E do; Pinheiro,José B.
Three soybean experiments, one for each maturation group (early, semi-early, and medium), were installed in the field in Assis, State of São Paulo, during the 2003/2004 growing season to evaluate damage caused by Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hubn.) and by the soybean stink bug complex, Euschistus heros (F.), Piezodorus guildinii (West.), and Nezara viridula (L.). The experiments were installed again in 2004/2005, with the exception of the early cycle group. Defoliation caused by A. gemmatalis was evaluated by the percentage estimate of leaf area cut in the first year only, due to low caterpillar infestations in 2004/2005. All three stink bug species were present in both growing seasons. In 2003/2004, E. heros was predominant over the other two; in the following...

Resistência de cultivares de batata a Myzus persicae (Sulz.)(Hemiptera: Aphididae) Neotropical Entomology
Salas,Fernando J S; Lopes,João R S; Fereres,Alberto.
Aphids are the most important vectors of viruses infecting potato (Solanum tuberosum). We focused on the response of the aphid vector Myzus persicae (Sulzer) to five commercial potatocultivars: Ágata, Jaette Bintje, Mondial, Monalisa and Santè, by traditional antibiosis and antixenosis tests and by the EPG (Electrical Penetration Graph) technique, as a step forward to the design of effective management practices. Our aim was to identify plant factors involved in resistance of these cultivars against M. persicae, both at the surface and in deeper plant tissues. Results from the antixenosis test confirmed a strong preference of M. persicae for the Mondial cultivar. The antibiosis study indicated a lower population development of the aphid in 'Monalisa' when...

Effect of gossypol on survival and reproduction of the zoophytophagous stinkbug Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Evangelista Junior,Walter S.; Santos,Roberta L.; Torres,Jorge B.; Zanuncio,José C..
Effect of gossypol on survival and reproduction of the zoophytophagous stinkbug Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas). Gossypol is a sesquiterpene aldehyde found in cotton plants conferring resistance against herbivory. Although the effect of this sesquiterpenoid on insect pests of cotton is known, the interaction of this compound with zoophytophagous predators such as Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Hemiptera, Pentatomidae) has not been studied so far. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the purified gossypol on nymphs and adults of P. nigrispinus. Nymphs and adults of this predator were fed on Tenebrio molitor pupae and supplemented with solutions of gossypol at concentrations of 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, and 0.20% (w/v) during the nymphal and...
