ASSESSING THE DEGREE OF FOOD INSECURITY IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: A PILOT PROJECT AgEcon
Bezuneh, Mesfin; Yiheyis, Zelealem; Del Rosario, Pedro-Juan; Ortiz, Luis.
The concept of food insecurity at the household and individual levels has been an area of extensive research in the late 1980s by individual researchers and public agencies. This work culminated in the development of the US Food Security Survey Module (FSSM), which is now seem to be the standard methodology of determining household food’s security status, at least in countries with developed economies. One of the purposes of this study is to adapt the FSSM in the context of a less developed economy, and thereby assess the prevalence of food insecurity and hunger. The module was administered as a pilot in a household survey of 110 low-income families in the Dominican Republic. This study found that 93% of the respondent were food-insecure, some more so...

Exploring Statistics South Africa’s national household surveys as sources of information about household-level food security AgEcon
Aliber, Michael.
This article seeks to contribute to an understanding of household-level food security in South Africa using publicly available household survey data from Statistics South Africa. The two datasets that are used in particular are the General Household Survey, an annual household survey that began in 2002, and the Income and Expenditure Survey of 2005/06. Because these surveys are not designed for the analysis of household-level food security, it is not possible to do the kind of detailed analysis made possible by purpose-designed surveys. However these datasets have some value in respect of understanding food security, namely: large sample sizes; the depth of complementary types of information that assist in contextualising the experience of food insecurity...

SOURCES AND UTILIZATION OF FOODSTUFFS IN BELARUSIAN HOUSEHOLDS: RESULTS OF THE GRODNO HOUSEHOLDS SURVEY AgEcon
Schmitz, Susanne; Brosig, Stephan; Degtiarevich, Josif J.; Degtiarevich, Irina J.; Grings, Michael.
The paper is a documentation of a (non-representative) survey on the food situation of households in the Grodno region, Belarus. It covers the year between September 2000 and August 2001. The focus of the survey was on the sources of food in the households (purchase, own production, and receipt in non-monetary transactions between households) and on the utilization (consumption, feed use, sale, unpaid transfers to other households, and spoilage). The paper describes the survey design and the scope and quality of the compiled data set and it presents results of descriptive analyses. The survey households consume a well balanced diet based on potatoes and vegetables as the main staple food. 75 percent of the households use small land plots for food...

Regression-Based Simulation of Anti- Poverty Policies in Uganda AgEcon
Kraybill, David S.; Bashaasha, Bernard.
In this paper, we investigate factors affecting total household consumption and poverty in Uganda using household survey data. Our analysis indicates that household wellbeing can be improved by expanding education at all levels (primary, secondary, and university), expanding formal employment, increasing the number of microenterprises, reducing the average household size, expanding the number of schools and health facilities so that distance to these facilities is reduced, and by providing electricity, marketing outlets, credit, and telephone service in more communities. To help policymakers assess the effects of particular policies on the national poverty rate, we developed a simulation model from our regression estimates. The simulations translate the...

Rising World Food Prices and Poverty in Fiji: A Developing Country Micro-Perspective AgEcon
Haszler, Henry; Natasiwai, Tevita; Gonemaituba, Waisiki.
Until the world financial crisis struck, commodity and food prices seemed to be on an inexorable uptrend. The increases caused widespread concern about the effects of higher food prices on poverty. These concerns are relevant to the poor people everywhere but are especially relevant to poor people in developing countries who must spend high proportions of their incomes on food. In this analysis we use data from the Fiji Islands Household Income and Expenditure Survey of 2002 – 2003 to assess the likely effects of the increase in food prices in Fiji over 2002 to mid 2008 on the incidence of poverty in Fiji. We review and discuss the impacts of some of the Fiji Islands Government’s responses designed to alleviate the impacts on the Fiji Islands community.

Household Expenditure Patterns for Carbohydrate Sources in Russia AgEcon
Shiptsova, Rimma; Goodwin, Harold L., Jr.; Holcomb, Rodney B..
This study provides a unique view of the demand for carbohydrate sources in Russia at the household level. The data used in this analysis were obtained from a 1996 survey in eight Russian metropolitan areas. An almost ideal demand system (AIDS) model is used to examine the expenditures for potatoes, bread, flour, rice, and pasta. The impacts of household demographic factors on the consumption of carbohydrates are also discussed.

Use of alcohol among the inhabitants of the 107 largest cities in Brazil - 2001 BJMBR
Galduróz,J.C.F.; Carlini,E.A..
Alcohol is part of the history of humanity, seemingly as a result of countless factors including the easy production of alcoholic beverages in practically all regions of the world. The authors studied aspects of the use of and the dependence on alcohol in Brazil, through a household survey conducted by Centro Brasileiro de Informações sobre Drogas Psicotrópicas (CEBRID). A total of 8,589 interviews were held in 107 of the largest cities in Brazil, all of them with more than 200 thousand inhabitants. The study was planned to gather information within the household environment about a stratified probabilistic sample obtained in three selection phases: 1) the censitaire sectors for each municipality, 2) a systematic randomized sampling, and 3) drafting a...
