OceanDocs
Urteaga, J.R.; Perrotta, R.G..
Argentine black drum distributes mainly in shallow waters associated to estuarine areas, particularly to Samborombon Bay where it may be detected throughout the year. Nevertheless, it can also be spotted more southwards (40°S) and at deeper waters. During summer, catches of the species in Samborombon Bay are practically negligible, probably due to movements towards shallow waters out of reach of the inshore commercial fleet. Landings increase in autumn and show peak values in winter, coinciding with the fishing season of whitemouth croaker, Micropogonias furnieri, whose geographical distribution within the bay overlaps that of black drum. As of 1995, landings of black drum showed increasing trends both in Argentina and Uruguay. These increments coincide...

OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G.; Hernandez, D.R..
The temperature that limits the presence of schools of Argentine chub mackerel Scomber japonicus was found to be around 19°C in the Mar del Plata area Buenos Aires prov., Argentina. At higher values, most shoals leave coastal waters in direction to the mid-shelf. An inverse relationship was observed between catches per unit of effort CPUE and sea surface temperature. The highest CPUE values corresponded to temperatures lower than 19°C. Beyond that value, the possibility of obtaining a CPUE higher than the unit is nearly null and the low standard deviation means it is unlikely to reach high CPUE values. The economic profit per minute of each daily cruise was estimated using a case study carried out with a single vessel pilot with mean structural and...

OceanDocs
Lasta, C.A.; Carozza, C.R.; Suquelle, P.; Bremec, C.; Errazti, E.; Perrotta, R.G.; Cotrina, C.P.; Bertelo, C.; Boccanfuso, J..
Whitemouth croaker Micropogonias furnieri fishery during three intensive fishing seasons in the outer area of the La Plata River (Argentina-Uruguay) is analyzed. Resource exploitation in the South Atlantic area shows a general retraction of the distribution range and an isolation of the La Plata River stock where most of the fishing effort concentrates. The species market evolution brought about, for Argentina and Uruguay, an important shift in its dynamics as of 1992, when the product insertion in Asiatic markets generated an important commercial attraction and a subsequent increase in the fishing effort by the argentine inshore coastal fleet. This caused a change in the fishery development in Argentina and the establishment, in winter, of a fleet...

Kitefin shark Dalatia licha (Dalatiidae)fishery in the northeastern Atlantic and some recommendations for elasmobranchs explotation OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G..
In the Azores Islands (NE Atlantic), between 1986 and 1998, Dalatias licha was caught to obtain liver oil. A drastic abundance decline, probably attributed to a high level of exploitation, was observed. In Argentina elasmobranchs have undergone intensive fishing and, at present, catches are compromised. The history of the fishery in Azores should be taken as example and warning when implementing elasmobranchs fisheries management in Argentina.

The fisheries policy of the Republic of Seychelles OceanDocs
Anon..
The fisheries policy of the Government of Seychelles was first drafted in 1986. At that time, both the industrial and artisanal fisheries in Seychelles were in a developmental stage and the policy reflected the needs to promote both the development and conservation of our marine resources as well as maximizing benefits. In 1985 the number of licenses issued for the industrial tuna fishery was 49 for the purse seiners and 165 for longliners with an annual purse seine catch of 130,000 tonnes. The total catch for the industrial purse seine fishery has continued to rise and peaked at around 407, 000 tonnes in the year 2003. The artisanal fishing fleet has declined from 410 vessels in 1985 to 330 in the year 2003, however, the nature of the fleet has changed...

Getabu, A..
An analysis was done on length frequency data to study mortality, exploitation rate and recruitment in Oreochromis niloticus in Nyanza Gulf, Lake Victoria. The fishing mortality (F) and natural mortality (M) were 0.468 y super(-1) and 2.0 y super(-1) respectively. The exploitation rate was 57.2%. Yield per recruit under the fishing regime was 250 g. Its predicted value at maximum sustained yield was 530 g, which could be obtained at a fishing mortality of 1.5 y super(-1). The recommended value was 500 g to be obtained at a fishing mortality of 1.0 y super(-1). The maximum biomass per recruit (B/R) was 1132.48 g while the optimum was 1068.38 g. The biomass recruit under the present fishing regime is 534.19 g which is...

RDP. OceanDocs
Ehrhardt, N.M.; Legault, C.; Prenski, L.B..
In this work we present a process of risk analysis related to the adoption of a Total Allowable Catch (TAC)based in series of allowable biological catches which contain uncertainty derived of the recruitment patterns which characterize the stock. With the information obtained by the F0,1, and F30. RDP, the exploitation ratio and with the 500 values of the projected biomass of 1995 obtained by Monte Carlo simulation, we calculate the distribution of the allowable biological catches under a scheme of F0,1, and F30. RDP andfor a natural mortality of 0.38. The selected TAC is expected to beas closer as possible to the reference fishery mortality F0,1, and F30. RDP. OceanDocs
Prenski, L.B.; Ehrhardt, N.M.; Legault, C..
Hoki, Macruronus magellanicus, is an important resource in the Argentinean multispecific southern demersal fishery. The species is distributed South of 46°S between the 50 and 200 meter isobaths. Thesouthern demersal fishery was almost nil prior to 1987, becoming more relevant toward the end of the 1980's. International fleets operating through several fishery agreement were those of the ex-Soviet Union,Bulgaria and Japan. Research on the abundance of hoki resources were initiated in the early 1970's; however, fishery research have been noticeably enhanced since 1992. In this study existing information on the Argentinean hoki fishery is integrated and an assessment of the status of exploitation of the species is carried out.As a result of the analyses, a...

The management and directions for future research on Lake Victoria multispecies fisheries OceanDocs
Okemwa, E..
A brief review is presented on some of the measures taken to manage Lake Victoria multispecies fisheries. It is suggested that management enforcement is not working. The linkage between research, policy making, industry and artisanal fishery is considered. The paper examines how the whole process of taking management decisions might be modified to take into account the realities of life in the riparian states around the lake and of the complexities and uncertainties of multispecies fisheries. Research and assessment are considered. Understanding the multispecies fisheries and characteristics of contemporary fisheries management are described. Recommendations for future research are given.

Gender participation in fisheries management of Lake Victoria, Kenya OceanDocs
Lwenya, C. A; Lwenya, K.R.; Abila, Richard O.; Omwega, R..
Gender plays an important role in the artisanal fisheries, therefore it critical for both men and women to participate fisheries management. This paper analyzes gender responses to introduced or enhanced fisheries regulations and constraints to compliance so as to facilitate gender participation in the management of Lake Victoria in Kenya. Both primary and secondary data have been used. Results indicated that in Lake Victoria, there is a clear-cut division of labor differentiated by gender, which is culturally defined. Men and women respond to management measures differently due to differentiated roles and space they operate in. Poverty emerged as a constraint to both men and women but affecting the women much more due to lack of economic and status...
