Preliminary study of age, growth and birthdates of juvenile sardine <Sardina pilchardus> (Walbaum, 1792) and European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the east coast of Tunisia OceanDocs
Khemiri, S.; Gaamour, A..
The microstructures of the otoliths of juvenile sardines (Sardina pilchardus) and anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus), collected in the East coast of Tunisia, were analyzed in order to estimate age, daily growth and hatch date. The fork length of sardines varied from 48 to 103 mm and estimated age ranged from 105 to 297 days. For the anchovies, the estimated age ranged from 79 to 300 days and the fork length from 42 to 86 mm. The length-age data of both species were fitted to the laird-Gompertz model. The corresponding growth equations were [lt=10.8 exp(2.74(1-exp(-0.006t)))] for sardines and [lt=3.1 exp(3.2(1-exp(-0.02t)))] for anchovies. The instantaneous growth rates of the juvenile of both species in the East of Tunisia were in agreement with the data...

Cotrina, C.P.; Raimondo, M.C..
The samples analyzed for growth parameters determination both in length and weight of the red porgy Pagrus pagrus corresponded to the years 1972 up to 1981 and to two areas of the Buenos Aires (Argentina)coastal shelf: a northern one (35°-36°S)and a southern one (39°-40°). Through age determination, based on the countdown of rings in scales, the parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth equation for the two mentioned areas were estimated as follows: 1)northern area:Lý=44.7;k=0.154;to=-2.96, and 2)southern area:Lý=49.9;k=0.153;to=-2.81. The results shown that the infinite length of the red porgy from the southern area was the greatest. The maximum likelihood method permitted to calculate, for each region, the three parameters and the respective confidence...

Chauvelon, P.; Bach, P..
The age study of fishes using daily growth increments DGI observations is made from: 1- either the exhaustive determination of increments, 2- or the calculation of daily growth increments density for different otolith zones between the nucleus and the margin edge of otolith, the width of increments being presumed constant for each zone. To apply the first method, increments may be readable individually from the nucleus to the margin edge of otolith. This is a very time consuming operation. It can cause miscalculation of increments and errors of the age estimation. The second method, called "DGI density method" is based on the decrease of the increment width in relation to the slowing down of the growth phenomena. The more used approach according to this...

OceanDocs
Urteaga, J.R.; Perrotta, R.G..
Argentine black drum distributes mainly in shallow waters associated to estuarine areas, particularly to Samborombon Bay where it may be detected throughout the year. Nevertheless, it can also be spotted more southwards (40°S) and at deeper waters. During summer, catches of the species in Samborombon Bay are practically negligible, probably due to movements towards shallow waters out of reach of the inshore commercial fleet. Landings increase in autumn and show peak values in winter, coinciding with the fishing season of whitemouth croaker, Micropogonias furnieri, whose geographical distribution within the bay overlaps that of black drum. As of 1995, landings of black drum showed increasing trends both in Argentina and Uruguay. These increments coincide...

Zavatteri, A..
This paper deals with the age and growth parameters of the Southwest Atlantic beaked skate Dipturus chilensis, as well as with some reproductive features of the species. Samples of individuals inhabiting 34°-55°S and 52°- 69°W were analyzed. They were taken during surveys carried out by the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) research vessels, as well as by a landing sampling at Mar del Plata port. The fish age was determined by counting growth rings from thin sections of the vertebral centra of 414 fish ranging 24-110 cm (203 males) and 24-115 cm (211 females) total length. The vertebral sections were stained using cobalt hloride. Both average per cent error (APE=5.94) and precision (D=5.89) indexes suggested that the...

OceanDocs
Giussi, A.R..
Long tailed hake Macruronus magellanicus, is a demersal fish, distributed in the SW Atlantic Ocean, in Malvinas Current waters, from 36° and 55°S, mainly between 50m and 200m depth. The species is also distributed in Chilenian waters in the Pacific Ocean, being caught in the Magellan Strait and the Beagle Channel. Age determination was estimated with the sagittae otoliths, in which only one ring is formed during the year. Growth parameters were calculated directly and with back calculated methodology, no differences were observed between the results. Differences in growth sexes were evident from 3 years old. The oldest age observed was 13. Different distributional areas of adults through out the year could suggest a migratory movement in northern waters of...

OceanDocs
Wöhler, O.C..
Hyaline or slow growth rings were identified in juvenile castañeta otoliths Cheilodactylus bergi, with the aim of establishing an objective criteria for age determination in this life stage.Samples were obtained from four research cruises carried out between 1988 and 1991 in the north-patagonian continental shelf and Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (CFZ)(SW Atlantic, between 34° and 47°S). Through measurement of sagitta otoliths, the existence of three hyaline rings was determined. The one closer to the nucleusis formed during the first winter in the fish life or when larval metamorphosis occurs (1-2 months after spawning peak). The second ring was related to the transitional period between postlarvae and juvenile. This involves a habitat change,...
