Considering the need to help the Cuban shrimp culture industry remain profitable, and the impact that feeding has on production costs, a research series was designed to evaluate new formulations that improve white shrimp Litopenaeus schmitti growth and reduce feeding costs. Five completely randomized experiments with 3 replicates per treatment were conducted. Juveniles (0.2-0.5 g) from the experimental farm were used. Trials were conducted at the Centro de Obtención y Cría de Larvas de Santa Cruz del Sur, Camaguey, and the Complejo Camaronero de Tunas de Zaza, Sancti Spiritus. In the first trial, 40-l plastic experimental units with 10 shrimp/unit were used to test the response of L. schmitti to the partial and total substitution (46, 59, 75, 88 y 100%) of... |

The feasibility of substituting soybean meal for ¢shmeal diets for juvenile white shrimp Litopenaeus schmitti (0.35 0.01g) was evaluated, and an adequate substitution level was determined. Five diets were evaluated using 46%, 59%, 75%, 88% and 100% substitution levels. Pellet water stability was signi¢cantly a¡ected by dietary soybean content (Po0.05). Increased soybean content produced lower pellet stability, ranging from a dry matter loss of 14^ 22% after a 2-h immersion, and 20^33% after an 8-h immersion. After 52 days, signi¢cant di¡erences (Po0.05) were found in shrimp weight, feed conversion ratio and protein e⁄ciency ratio. The values were 0.64^1.06 g, 2.8^7.9 and 0.45^1.21, respectively, for the three measurements. Overall, better results were... |

Azolla pinnata as a possible replacement of the palm kernel cake in the diet of Oreochromis niloticus. Compounded diets from a control with palm kernel cake replaced at varying levels of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% with the aquatic fern (oven dried Azolla pinnata) were fed to Oreochromis niloticus for twelve weeks to determine the acceptability and utilization of the fern in the diet, verify the nutritional influence of the fern on the performance of the fish and possible optimum palm kernel cake replacement level. The fish readily accepted the test diets. Better growth responses were recorded in the treatments containing Azolla pinnata meal. The best response was observed in the 20% replacement level, thereby suggesting an optimum replacement. However... |

The fish feed and nutrition in Nigeria was reviewed. Crab meal, shrimp head meal, tadpole meal, soybean meal were used for partial or total replacement of fish meal in the diets of cultivable fish species and no satisfactory result is yet obtained for 100% of replacement of fishmeal. The cost price of species specific diets so far developed is out of tune for profitable fish farming venture. Further investigation is required to develop cost effective species specific diets. The problem in feed and nutrition was highlighted and possible solutions were proffered. |
