Preliminary study of age, growth and birthdates of juvenile sardine <Sardina pilchardus> (Walbaum, 1792) and European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the east coast of Tunisia 20
Khemiri, S.; Gaamour, A..
The microstructures of the otoliths of juvenile sardines (Sardina pilchardus) and anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus), collected in the East coast of Tunisia, were analyzed in order to estimate age, daily growth and hatch date. The fork length of sardines varied from 48 to 103 mm and estimated age ranged from 105 to 297 days. For the anchovies, the estimated age ranged from 79 to 300 days and the fork length from 42 to 86 mm. The length-age data of both species were fitted to the laird-Gompertz model. The corresponding growth equations were [lt=10.8 exp(2.74(1-exp(-0.006t)))] for sardines and [lt=3.1 exp(3.2(1-exp(-0.02t)))] for anchovies. The instantaneous growth rates of the juvenile of both species in the East of Tunisia were in agreement with the data...

Zaabi, S.; Afli, A..

Perrotta, R.G.; Tringali, L.S.; Izzo, A.; Boccanfuso, J.; López, F.; Macchi, G.J..
Movements pattern records of the Mar del Plata inshore fishing fleet during the 1997/98 and 1998/99 chub mackerel fishing seasons (October-January) allowed to observe that there is coincidence between the decrease of the 1983-1997 catches with respect to years previous to the 1975/76 "critical season" and a reduction of the inshore fleet fishing grounds which modifies accessibility of the fleet to the chub mackerel schools. Biostatistical and gonadal development results obtained in the Mar del Plata area (i.e., presence of adults during almost the whole fishing season which overlaps with the spawning season) do not differ significantly from those obtained during previous fishing seasons. As recommended in previous papers, chub mackerel fishing operations...

Cordo, H.D..
The structure and abundance of Ling spawning stock were analized from basic biological and oceanographic data recorded during research surveys carried out by INIDEP between 1995 and 2000, to assess the juveniles fraction of common hake stock (January) and of Argentine patagonian squid (February). Jointly both surveys covered the main spawning area of Ling between 44º S and 48º S and approximately between the mouth of San Jorge Gulf (60º W) and 200 m isobath (65º 30’ W) during the summer season (mid-December to mid-March). Size structures and maturity stages confirmed the presence of a spawning unit in the area covered by the surveys. This enabled the estimate of an annual index of Ling spawning stock abundance. Abundance shows a decreasing trend since...

Fezzani Serbaji, S.; Chemmam-A, B.; Ben Salem, M..

Coral reefs of Gorgona Island, Colombia, with special reference to corallivores and their influence on community structure and reef development 20
Glynn, P.W.; Prahl, H. von; Guhl, F..

Rodríguez-Ramírez, A.; Nivia-Ruíz, J.; Garzón-Ferreira, J..
Within the framework of the CARICOMP(Caribbean Coastal Marine Productivity) monitoring program, a study of the Avicennia germinans mangrove formation of Chengue bay (Tayrona Natural Park, Colombia) was performed between June 1995 and July 1996, based on the evaluation of structural and functional characteristics at three monitoring plots (10 x 10 m). The structure of the studied formation is coincident with that of fringing forests of the Caribbean region in having small trees (dbh=11.3 cm, total height=6.3 m) and high densities (16.3 trunks/0.01 ha). During the monitored period there was a low mortality rate (0.7 trees/year) and there were significant increases of the circumferences at breast height (as well as of the variables derived from this measure)....

Barretto, A.C..
The age-class distribution of the Brazilian flathead Percophis brasiliensis in relation to environmental variables in spring and winter, and the growth of both sexes, were studied in the SW Atlantic Coastal System (SACS)(34°S-31° S). Growth was studied from 1449 individuals (n=853, spring (1998 + 2000), n=596, winter (2004)) to which size (TL), sex, and age were determined. Age was determined considering that an opaque plus a hyaline band (present in the transverse section of the sagitta otolith) represented 1 year of life. The age-class distribution in spring and winter was established through hierarchical clustering and non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (nMDS analysis). This analysis grouped sampling stations (n=109, spring 1998; n=160, winter 2004)...
