Balanced cytokine-producing pattern in mice immunized with an avirulent Trypanosoma cruzi Anais da ABC (AABC)
Soares,Milena B. P.; Gonçalves,Renata; Pyrrho,Alexandre S.; Costa,Deise A.; Paiva,Claudia N.; Gattass,Cerli R..
We have previously demonstrated that inoculation of BALB/c mice with trypomastigotes of CL-14, an avirulent Trypanosoma cruzi clone, prevents the development of parasitemia and mortality after challenge with virulent CL strain. In this report, we investigated the cytokine and antibody profiles induced by inoculation with CL-14 clone. Groups of mice were inoculated with trypomastigotes of CL-14 clone and challenged with infective CL strain. Challenged CL-14-inoculated mice had lower levels of IFN-g and higher production of IgG1 antibodies as compared to CL strain-infected mice. Previous inoculation with CL-14 clone partially prevented the suppression of IL-2 production caused by CL strain infection. No significant...

Cotesia flavipes (CAM) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) Supresses Immune Responses In Diatraea flavipennella (BOX) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
PASSOS,ELIANA M. DOS; WANDERLEY-TEIXEIRA,VALÉRIA; MARQUES,EDMILSON J.; TEIXEIRA,ÁLVARO A.C.; BRAYNER,FÁBIO A..
The present research aimed to elucidate which aspects of immune responses in Diatraea flavipennella are suppressed by the parasitoid Cotesia flavipes, thus, ensuring parasitism success. We investigated the presence of apoptosis in fat body cells through the TUNEL technique. According to the results, reduced levels of nitric oxide and phenoloxidase activity were observed in larvae parasitized for three days, and reduced total number of hemocytes, after three and seven days. An increase in plasmatocytes and decrease in spherulocytes numbers were observed in the differential count on the third day of parasitism. The number of melanized microspheres in parasitized larvae was low and indicated less intense melanization. The ultrastructural analysis confirmed...

Increased immunoglobulin production in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) exposed to agrichemicals BJMBR
Kreutz,L.C.; Pavan,T.R.; Alves,A.G.; Correia,A.G.; Barriquel,B.; dos Santos,E.D.; Barcellos,L.J.G..
Fish vaccination has been increasingly exploited as a tool to control pathogen infection. The production of immunoglobulin following vaccination might be affected by several factors such as management procedures, water temperature, and the presence of xenobiotics. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the kinetics of immunoglobulin production in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) inoculated with inactivated Aeromonas hydrophila and kept at two different water temperatures (17.4±0.4° or 21.3±0.3°C). The effect of a second antigen inoculation and exposure of fish to sublethal concentrations of the herbicides atrazine and glyphosate at 10% of the lethal concentration (LC50-96h) on specific serum antibodies were also investigated. Antibodies to A....

A liquid phase blocking ELISA for the detection of antibodies against infectious bronchitis virus BJMBR
Cardoso,T.C.; Mouro-Sousa,R.L.; Oliveira,C.; Stringhini,G.; Augusto-Pinto,A..
A liquid phase blocking ELISA (LPB-ELISA) was developed for the detection and measurement of antibodies against infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). The purified and nonpurified virus used as antigen, the capture and detector antibodies, and the chicken hyperimmune sera were prepared and standardized for this purpose. A total of 156 sera from vaccinated and 100 from specific pathogen-free chickens with no recorded contact with the virus were tested. The respective serum titers obtained in the serum neutralization test (SNT) were compared with those obtained in the LPB-ELISA. There was a high correlation (r2 = 0.8926) between the two tests. The LPB-ELISA represents a single test suitable for the rapid detection of antibodies against bronchitis virus in...

Enhancement of anti-OVA IgG2c production in vivo by enalapril BJMBR
Almeida,L.C.; Muraro,L.S.; Albuquerque,D.A..
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors have non-hemodynamic, pleiotropic effects on the immune response. The effects of ACE inhibitors on the production of cytokines and T-cell functions are well established. However, little is known on the effects of these medicines on humoral response to foreign antigens. In this study, we investigated the effect of enalapril treatment on ovalbumin (OVA)-specific IgG1 and IgG2c production in mice determined by ELISA. Two groups of 8-week-old C57BL/6 females mice (3–4/group) were subcutaneously immunized with OVA (10 μg/animal) in presence of Alhydrogel (1 mg/mouse) and boosted at day 21. The mice were treated with enalapril (5 mg/kg daily, po) or were left without treatment for one month. The animals were bled...
