Hydrodynamic behavior of a lab-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB) operated with an adopted hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 12 hours 64
Lourenço,Aguinaldo Menegassi Pereira; Campos,Cláudio Milton Montenegro.
The present research was carried out in the Laboratory of Water Analysis at the Engineering Department at Federal University of Lavras (LWAED-UFLA), in order to evaluate the hydrodynamic behavior of a lab-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB) that was continuously fed with liquid effluent from swine manure with solid separation over 2mm. The hydrodynamic parameters were determined by a tracer study, under hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 12 hours, using Lithium Chloride (LiCl) as a tracer. The system was monitored periodically through physical analysis of samples collected at UASB, during the steady-state operational conditions. The physical-chemical analyses were accomplished using a flame photometry. The operational average temperature in...

Hydraulic retention time on vinasse stabilisation with limestone in the acidogenic phase of anaerobic digestion 65
Tomielis,Ismael Plácido; Barcelos,Sheyla Thays Vieira; Cereda,Marney Pascoli.
ABSTRACT: The main problem in anaerobic digestion of low-protein residues is the instability caused acidity. The use of limestone at the same time as a neutralizing agent and support material is innovative because stones wear allows the slow release of the calcium carbonate thereby eliminating dispersers. Free calcium content in the system was measured in two plug flow reactors filled with vinasse at initial pH of 4.50. The proportion of 1.8 tonnes of limestone per m³ of vinasse was evaluated at the Hydraulic Retention Times (HRT) of 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours, allowing stabilisation at 96 hours. The ratio of Volatile Acids/Total Alkalinity (VA/TA) ranged from 0.2 to 0.4 and the pH reached 7.0, at the HRT of 120 hours. Increasing the HRT also increased...

EFFECT OF ORGANIC LOAD AND ALKALINITY ON DAIRY WASTEWATER BIOMETHANATION 70
Kispergher,Eduardo M.; D'Aquino,Camila A.; Costa Junior,Luis C. da; Mello,Thiago C. de; Weinschutz,Regina; Mathias,Alvaro L..
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of variations in organic load (hydraulic retention times - HRTs: from 2 to 0.5 day) and in alkalinity (NaHCO3 from 4,000 to 1,000 mg.L−1) on methane production. Biomass of sewage sludge was inoculated and stabilized on 1" polypropylene rings. The rings were immersed in the liquid phase (8.41 L) of an upflow anaerobic filter reactor (12.22 L). A solution of 5 g of whole milk powder per liter was used to simulate effluent from the dairy industry. Process effectiveness was measured by chemical oxygen demand reduction, biogas production, and biogas methane content. Biogas production started at a 2-day HRT and synthetic effluent alkalinization with 4,000 mg.L−1 NaHCO3. The best operation condition was at 1-day...

Swine effluent treatment using anaerobic digestion at different loading rates 70
Amaral,André C. do; Kunz,Airton; Steinmetz,Ricardo L. R.; Cantelli,Fábio; Scussiato,Lucas A.; Justi,Karin C..
The industrial swine production is characterized by generation of significant effluent amounts that require treatment. The most adopted practices by Brazilian swine farmers have been wastewater storage in lagoons and its subsequent use as a biofertilizer. Nutrient accumulation in soil and water creates the need for an effective management of these residues. The anaerobic digestion process is an important alternative and low-cost treatment for organic matter reduction. However, its efficiency is limited by the digester capacity of solid degradation, especially at low hydraulic retention times. Thus, the present study aimed to verify the behavior of an upflow anaerobic digester by increasing the organic loading rate. This was accomplished in three stages...
