Hydroids (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) collected on the inner continental shelf of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the Oceanographic Operations GEOCOSTA RIO I and II Biota Neotropica
Grohmann,Priscila Araci; Nogueira,Claudio do Carmo; Silva,Vera Maria Abud Pacífico da.
The Brazilian Navy (DHN/MB) commissioned a series of Oceanographic Operations covering almost the entire inner continental shelf of the country from the 1960s through the 1980s. Surveys provided geological data on the sea bottom and marine biota along the entire Brazilian coast. This report lists data on 15 hydroid species collected during Operations GEOCOSTA RIO I in 1979 and GEOCOSTA RIO II in 1986, at depths ranging from 25 to 89 m. Hydroids were obtained at two of 65 stations in Operation GEOCOSTA RIO I, each represented by one species: Aglaophenia rhynchocarpa Allman, 1877 and Plumularia strobilophora Billard, 1913. In Operation GEOCOSTA RIO II, hydroids were present at four of the 25 sampled stations. Fourteen species were recorded: Pennaria disticha...

Report on the Hydroida collected by the "BALGIM" expedition in and around the Strait of Gibraltar Naturalis
Ramil, F.; Vervoort, W..
A total of 102 species and varieties of hydroids and three unidentifiable species are described or mentioned in the present report, which deals principally with hydroids collected in the IberoMoroccan Bay (and adjacent Atlantic), the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Alboran Sea; for revisionary purposes some additional, mainly Atlantic, material had to be included. The material described has been assigned to four families of athecate and 14 families of thecate hydroids. Nearly all species have been illustrated and a permanent slide collection has been made. Where necessary the material described has been compared with type material; ten new (sub)species are described, of which eight from the BALGIM material. Holotypes, and where necessary and/or possible...

Some hydroids (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, in the North Atlantic Ocean Naturalis
Calder, D.R.; Vervoort, W..
An account is given of some hydroids from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, collected during dives of submersibles "Nautile" (operated by IFREMER, France) and "Alvin" (operated by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, U.S.A). The specimens came from three main sectors of the ridge: 15 species from localities near hydrothermal fields (540-1727 m) SW of the Azores, five species from an area (2565-3902 m) west of the Cape Verde Islands near Researcher Ridge, and one species from a site (4529-4578 m) within the Vema Fracture zone west of Guinea Bissau. In all, 21 species were distinguished, comprising two anthoathecates and 19 leptothecates. The families Lafoeidae and Sertulariidae were best represented, with six and four species respectively. Halecium profundum spec....

Sertularia vervoorti (Hydrozoa: Sertulariidae), an undescribed species of hydroid from Brazil Naturalis
Migotto, A.E.; Calder, D.R..
An account is given of Sertularia vervoorti spec. nov., a small leptothecate species collected in coastal waters of southeastern Brazil. Specimens were found on brown algae, collected at depths of 15-20 m on the inner continental shelf off Espírito Santo state. This hydroid resembles Sertularia tumida Allman, 1877, S. linealis Warren, 1908, and S. longa Millard, 1958, but differs from these and other species of the genus in having an unusual bulge around the hydrothecal wall just distal to its insertion with the hydrocaulus. The colony form of S. vervoorti is more compact than in these species, and gonothecae are annulated rather than smooth as in S. linealis and S. longa.

Report on hydroids (Hydrozoa, Cnidaria) in the collection of the Zoological Museum, University of Tel-Aviv, Israel Naturalis
Vervoort, W..
Twenty-eight hydroid species are recorded from the eastern Mediterranean and the northern part of the Red Sea, all material originating from the collections of the Museum of the Zoological Institute, Tel-Aviv University. The collection also included four species that could only be identified to generic level. Though the majority had previously been recorded from either the Mediterranean or the Red Sea, some constitute the first definite record from Israeli coastal waters. All material has been redeposited in the Tel-Aviv collection; slides and some duplicate samples are in the collections of the National Museum of Natural History (Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum, now also incorporating the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie), Leiden, the Netherlands.

The genus Sertularella Gray, 1848 (Cnidaria: Hydroida) along the coasts of Galicia (Spain) Naturalis
Ramil, F.; Parapar, J.; Vervoort, W..
Species of the genus Sertularella from the coasts of Galicia (Atlantic coast of Spain) have been studied and 5 species, S. gayi (Lamouroux, 1821), S. polyzonias (Linnaeus, 1758), S. ellisii (Deshayes & MilneEdwards, 1836), S. fusiformis (Hincks, 1861), and S. mediterranea Hartlaub, 1901, are recognized, described, and their synonymy discussed. Notes are added on two species of which the names occur repeatedly in European hydroid literature but that in our opinion belong in the southern Atlantic fauna: S. gaudichaudi (Lamouroux, 1824) and S. picta (Meyen, 1834).

Plumularian hydroids (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) from the Strait of Gibraltar and nearby areas Naturalis
Medel, M.D.; Vervoort, W..
Twenty-four species of plumularian hydroids (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) from the Strait of Gibraltar area are described and figured, including material from the coasts of southern Spain (between El Portil near the Spanish-Portuguese border and Adra, Mediterranean coast of Granada, c. 3°W) and from Ceuta in northern Africa. The geographical distribution of all species is briefly discussed and where relevant additional notes are added.

Soft-bottom hydroids (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) collected in the Ría de Vigo (NW Spain) Naturalis
Ramil, F.; Ansín Agís, J.; Fernández Pulpeiro, E..
Thirty-one hydroids species, living on the sublittoral soft-bottoms, are reported from the Ría de Vigo, representing one third of the species currently known, from the Ría. Twenty-four are Leptomedusae and only seven are Anthomedusae. The identifications of Campomma hincksi, Cosmetira pilosella and Laodicea undulata, based only on the hydroid stage, are discussed. The report includes one species that could be identified only to generic level as well, and also a description of the previously unknown male gonotheca of Halecium liouvillei. Five species, Merona cornucopiae, Hydractinia echinata, Lovenella clausa, Opercularella spec, and Laomedea angulata, were collected exclusively from soft bottoms that seem to be their typical habitat. Analysis of...
