Synthesis and Characterization of Calcium Phosphate Compounds with Strontium and Magnesium Ionic Substitutions International Journal of Morphology
Rabelo Neto,Jose da Silva; Knopf,Thaiane Balesteri; Fredel,Marcio Celso; Olate,Sergio; de Moraes,Paulo H.
Bioceramics offer advantages in the repair and regeneration of hard tissues and are used as bone void fillers and particulate fillers in bone cements with surgical applications. Regeneration and osteosynthesis stimulation via the release of essential ions such as strontium (Sr2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) is a relatively new field. Therefore, there is great interest in investigating various ionic substitutions on crystallographic structure and characteristics for use in osteoporosis prevent and increase bone formation and decrease bone resorption. In this study, we synthesize calcium phosphate samples with Sr2+ and Mg2+ ionic substitutions. The samples are characterized using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and inductively coupled...

Osseointegration of Hydroxyapatite Implants in Rat Tibial Defects with Sciatic Nerve Injury International Journal of Morphology
da Cunha,Marcelo Rodrigues; Laraia,Isabela Ortiz; Franco,Guacira R; Miguel,Natalia N; Maciel,Ana A; dos Santos,Geovane Ribeiro; Isayama,Ricardo Noboro.
Bone metabolism is influenced by different factors and muscle activity acts as a stimulator of bone plasticity. Conditions such as nerve injuries can compromise bone physiology due to muscle inactivity. Preview studies have shown that nerve damage reduces P substance and calcitonin gene-related peptides, also known as neuropeptides that may have a key role on bone healing. Therefore, this study evaluated the osseointegration of hydroxyapatite implants in tibial defects of rats submitted to unilateral sciatic nerve section. Twelve Wistar rats were divided into two groups (G1 and G2). In G1, the sciatic nerve was left intact and in G2 the left sciatic nerve was completely sectioned. An experimental tibial bone defect was then created in both groups and...

Morphosynthesis: high fidelity inorganic replica of the fibrous network of loofa sponge (Luffa cylindrica) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mazali,Italo O.; Alves,Oswaldo L..
High fidelity calcium carbonate and hydroxyapatite (bio) inorganic replicas of the fibrous network of the dried fruit of Luffa cylindrica are described, utilizing a facile synthetic route. The loofa sponge is a highly complex macroscopic architectural template, an inexpensive and sustainable resource. In the context of the morphosynthesis, the capability of replication of the loofa sponge opens the possibility of the use of biodiversity in obtaining new materials. We would like to emphasize that the template proposed in this paper, makes possible the preparation of inorganic replicas with a very desirable size, on the centimeter scale. This fact is innovative with respect to inorganic replicas described in the literature, which predominate at the...

Synthesis of calcium-phosphate and chitosan bioceramics for bone regeneration Anais da ABC (AABC)
FINISIE,MELLATIE R.; JOSUÉ,ATCHE; FÁVERE,VALFREDO T.; LARANJEIRA,MAURO C. M..
Bioceramic composites were obtained from chitosan and hydroxyapatite pastes synthesized at physiological temperature according to two different syntheses approaches. Usual analytical techniques (X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, Thermo gravimetric analysis, Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray dispersive energy analysis and Porosimetry) were employed to characterize the resulting material. The aim of this investigation was to study the bioceramic properties of the pastes with non-decaying behavior from chitosan-hydroxyapatite composites. Chitosan, which also forms a water-insoluble gel in the presence of calcium ions, and has been reported to have pharmacologically beneficial effects on osteoconductivity, was added to...

Preparation and characterization of hydroxyapatite-coated iron oxide particles by spray-drying technique Anais da ABC (AABC)
Donadel,karina; Felisberto,Marcos D.V.; Laranjeira,Mauro C.M..
Magnetic particles of iron oxide have been increasingly used in medical diagnosis by magnetic resonance imaging and in cancer therapies involving targeted drug delivery and magnetic hyperthermia. In this study we report the preparation and characterization of iron oxide particles coated with bioceramic hydroxyapatite by spray-drying. The iron oxide magnetic particles (IOMP) were coated with hydroxyapatite (HAp) by spray-drying using two IOMP/HAp ratios (0.7 and 3.2). The magnetic particles were characterized by way of scanning electronic microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, flame atomic absorption spectrometry, vibrating sample magnetometry and particle size distribution (laser diffraction). The...

Modified cementless total coxofemoral prosthesis: development, implantation and clinical evaluation Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Arias,S.A.; Blanco,J.R.T.; Doretto,J.V.; Vieira,G.L.T.; Oliveira,H.P.; Rezende,C.M.F..
The aim of this study was to modify canine coxofemoral prostheses and the clinical evaluation of the implantation. Fifteen canine hips and femora of cadavers were used in order to study the surface points of modification in prostheses and develop a perforation guide. Femoral stems and acetabular components were perforated and coated with biphasic calcium phosphate layer. Twelve young adult male mongrel dogs were implanted with coxofemoral prostheses. Six were operated upon and implanted with cemented canine modular hip prostheses, establishing the control group. The remaining six were implanted with a novel design of cementless porous tricalcic phosphate-hydroxyapatite coated hip prostheses. Clinical and orthopedic performance, complications, and thigh...

Quantification of iodine in porous hydroxyapatite matrices for application as radioactive sources in brachytherapy BABT
Lacerda,Kássio André; Lameiras,Fernando Soares; Silva,Viviane Viana.
In this study, non-radioactive iodine was incorporated in two types of biodegradable hydroxyapatite-based porous matrices (HA and HACL) through impregnation process from sodium iodine aqueous solutions with varying concentrations (0.5 and 1.0 mol/L) . The results revealed that both systems presented a high capacity of incorporating iodine into their matrices. The quantity of incorporated iodine was measured through Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA). The porous ceramic matrices based on hydroxyapatite demonstrated a great potential for uses in low dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy.

Variation of Hydroxyapatite Content in Soft Gelatin Affects Mesenchymal Stem Cell Differentiation BABT
Kantawong,Fahsai; Tanum,Junijira; Wattanutchariya,Wassanai; Sooksaen,Pat.
Gelatin is a common material used in tissue engineering and hydroxyapatite (HA) has a composition and structure similar to natural bone mineral. HA is also used to increase the adhesion ability of scaffolds. The physical and mechanical properties of gelatin, together with the chemical properties of HA, can affect cell differentiation. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the gene expression of human mesenchymal stem cells (HMSCs) upon culturing on gelatin composite with HA. Low amounts of HA were introduced into the gelatin in order to modulate properties of gelatin. Three types of hydrogel were fabricated by glutaraldehyde crosslinking before lyophilization to produce the porous 3D structure: (1) pure gelatin, (2) 0.5 mg/ml HA in gelatin, and...
