Morphology and distribution of the freshwater mussel Diplodon granosus, a rare and poorly understood species Acta Amazonica

ABSTRACT Diplodon granosus was one of the first freshwater mussels to be described for South America. However, the status of the species was confusing for a long time, receiving different taxonomic treatments. In this paper, we redescribe the shell, with new data on the soft parts and information on the distribution and conservation of D. granosus, a rarely recorded species. The shell is thin, not inflated; the macrosculpture is composed only by granules that cover the whole shell, not forming bars; the microsculpture comprises short spikes. In the soft parts we highlight the few, weak and irregularly distributed lamellar connections of the outer demibranch and some features of the stomach, such as the distally enlarged minor typhlosole. Freshwater mussels from South America: state of the art of Unionida, specially Rhipidodontini Biota Neotropica

Abstract Unionida is the most diverse clade of freshwater bivalves. Among the groups occurring in South America, one with the highest number of species is Rhipidodontini (Hyriidae, Unionida, Paleoheterodonta, Bivalvia). However several issues remains on taxonomy and systematic of this group, leading to problems on species identification, description, as also as a limiting factor to other type of studies (e.g., ecology, conservation,…). In this paper is presented a synthesis of available knowledge about Diplodon Spix in Wagner, 1827 and Rhipidodonta Mörch, 1853 in South America, as a first step in order to a better understating of Rhipidodontini. ANTECEDENTES ARQUEOLÓGICOS DEL GENERO DIPLODON (SPIX, 1827) (BIVALVIA, HYRIIDAE) EN CHILE Gayana

Se presenta una revisión bibliográfica de los registros del género Diplodon (Spix, 1827) (Hyriidae), presentes en sitios arqueológicos de Chile. Las evidencias indican una efímera presencia de estos bivalvos en contextos arqueológicos de finales del Pleistoceno, mientras que durante gran parte del Holoceno su registro es más significativo. No obstante, sólo algunos sitios arqueológicos muestran su utilización como materia prima y/o recurso alimenticio. Las evidencias arqueológicas de Diplodon muestran similar distribución a la actual. QUANTITATIVE KARYOTYPE OF DIPLODON CHILENSIS (GRAY 1828) (BIVALVIA:HYRIIDAE) Gayana

The karyotype of a freshwater population of Diplodon chilensis located in La Poza area of the Villarrica Lake (39º18'S; 72º05'W), Southern Chile, was studied. The chromosomes were obtained by squash of cleaving embryos, previously treated with colchicine and fixed in ethanol-acetic acid 3:1 at 4ºC and stained using the Feulgen reaction. Diplodon chilensis showed a diploid karyotype of 2n = 34, with metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes. This work is the first approach to cytogenetic characterization of Chilean populations of this species.

Estado de conocimiento de los Bivalvos dulceacuícolas de Chile Gayana

Se presenta el estado actual del conocimiento de los bivalvos dulceacuícolas chilenos. Las especies descritas a la fecha, pertenecen a las familias Hyriidae, representada sólo por el género Diplodon con dos especies (D. chilensis y D. solidulus) y Sphaeriidae con tres géneros: Pisidium con siete especies (P. chilense, P. magellanicum, P. lebruni, P. observationis, P. meierbrooki, P. huillichum y P. llanquihuense), Sphaerium con dos especies (S. lauricochae y S. forbesi) y Musculium con dos especies (M. argentinum y M. patagonicum). Entidades subgenéricas y subespecíficas son reconocidas sólo para Hyriidae. The aim of the present study was to experimentaly evaluate the capability of the freshwater mussel Diplodon chilensis as a potential depurator of residual waters in fish farming. With this purpose, the present study was carried out at the fish farm of the School of Aquaculture of the Catholic University- Temuco, Chile (38º46'S; 72º38'W). The experimental design consisted of 12 poly vinyl chloride trays of 50x20x20cm corresponding to 3 treatments with 3 replicates each treatment and their respective controls. Each tray contained sterilized sand substratum and running water from a trout feeding tank. Se presenta una revisión actualizada de la taxonomía de los bivalvos dulceacuícolas chilenos. Gloquídio de Diplodon martensi (lhering) (Mollusca, Bivalvia, Hyriidae) e seu ciclo parasitário Zoologia

Conchological and anatomical studies of the glochidium of Diplodon martensi (lhering, 1893) were performed on samples collected in a small river, tributary from the Caí River, that belong to the Jacuí River sub-basin in south-eastern Brazil. The parasitic development of the glochidium was observed in laboratory on a small cichlid fish Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys (Hensel, 1870).
