Effect of Intermittent Feeding on Gonadal Function in Male And Female NMRI Mice During Chronic Stress BABT
Ehteram,Badri Zarrin; Sahraei,Hedayat; Meftahi,Gholam Hossein; Khosravi,Maryam.
ABSTRACT Stress can inhibit gonadal activity via Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Gonad (HPG) axis activity suppression. In the present study, effects of intermittent feeding (IF) on gonadal function under stress in male and female mice were evaluated. Twenty eight male and twenty eight female mice's were divided into four groups. The control group received adequate food and water without stress. The second group received four days of electric shock without food deprivation. The third group was deprived of food two hours/day for a week, and the fourth group was deprived of food (2 hours/day for seven consecutive days) and then electric foot shock stress was applied to them for four days. Blood samples were collected from all animals for plasma testosterone, estrogen...

Miranda,Helen Cristina; Nunes,Sandra Odebrecht Vargas; Reiche,Edna Maria Vissoci; Oda,Julie Massayo Maeda; Watanabe,Maria Angelica Ehara.
The aim of this work was to study the plasma concentration of IL-6 by ELISA in the patients with mood disorders and normal healthy donors. The plasma concentration of IL-6 was higher in the patients than in the control healthy group. Results suggested that IL-6 could serve as an immunological marker in mood disorder pathogenesis as well.

IL-6 and IL-8 in cerebrospinal fluid from patients with aseptic meningitis and bacterial meningitis: their potential role as a marker for differential diagnosis BJID
Pinto Junior,Vitor Laerte Laerte; Rebelo,Maria Cristina; Gomes,Rachel Novaes; Assis,Edson Fernandes de; Castro-Faria-Neto,Hugo C; Bóia,Marcio Neves.
Cytokines are molecules that act as mediators of immune response; cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) IL-6 is found in all meningeal inflammatory diseases, but IL-8 is associated with acute bacterial meningitis (ABM). A case control study was done to ascertain the discriminatory power of these cytokines in differentiating ABM from aseptic meningitis (AM); IL-6 and IL-8 CSF concentrations were tested through ELISA in samples collected from patients who underwent investigation for meningitis. Sixty patients, 18 with AM, nine with bacteriologic confirmed ABM and 33 controls, assisted in 2005 (MA and controls) and 2007 (ABM) were included. Differently from controls, IL-6 concentrations were increased both in MA and ABM patients (p < 0.05). CSF IL-8 levels were...

Muscle strength but not functional capacity is associated with plasma interleukin-6 levels of community-dwelling elderly women BJMBR
Oliveira,D.M.G.; Narciso,F.M.S.; Santos,M.L.A.S.; Pereira,D.S.; Coelho,F.M.; Dias,J.M.D.; Pereira,L.S.M..
The association of plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels, muscle strength and functional capacity was investigated in a cross-sectional study of community-dwelling elderly women from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Elderly people who present controlled chronic diseases with no negative impact on physical, psychosocial and mental functionality are considered to be community-dwelling. Psychological and social stress due to unsuccessfully aging can represent a risk for immune system disfunctions. IL-6 levels, isokinetic muscle strength of knee flexion/extension, and functional tests to determine time required to rise from a chair and gait velocity were measured in 57 participants (71.21 ± 7.38 years). Serum levels of IL-6 were measured in duplicate and were performed...

Effects of natural aging and gender on pro-inflammatory markers BJMBR
Milan-Mattos,J.C.; Anibal,F.F.; Perseguini,N.M.; Minatel,V.; Rehder-Santos,P.; Castro,C.A.; Vasilceac,F.A.; Mattiello,S.M.; Faccioli,L.H.; Catai,A.M..
The term inflammaging is now widely used to designate the inflammatory process of natural aging. During this process, cytokine balance is altered, presumably due to the loss of homeostasis, thus contributing to a greater predisposition to disease and exacerbation of chronic diseases. The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between pro-inflammatory markers and age in the natural aging process of healthy individuals. One hundred and ten subjects were divided into 5 groups according to age (22 subjects/group). Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) were quantified using the ELISA method. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) was analyzed by turbidimetry according to laboratory procedures. The main findings of this study...

IL-6 upregulation contributes to the reduction of miR-26a expression in hepatocellular carcinoma cells BJMBR
Zhang,Yafei; Zhang,Bicheng; Zhang,Anran; Li,Xiaohua; Liu,Jian; Zhao,Jie; Zhao,Yong; Gao,Jianfei; Fang,Dianchun; Rao,Zhiguo.
A recent study showed that miR-26a is downregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma tissues and that this downregulation is an independent predictor of survival. Interestingly, the same study also reported that miR-26a downregulation causes a concomitant elevation of IL-6 expression. Because miR-26a expression was found to be transcriptionally downregulated by oncogene c-Myc in various cancers, and the expression of c-Myc was increased by IL-6 stimulation, we hypothesized that IL-6 contributes to reduction of miR-26a in hepatocellular carcinoma. Serum IL-6 was measured by ELISA and miR-26a was detected by qRT-PCR. The data of 30 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who had undergone surgical tumor resection revealed that serum IL-6 could be considered to be...

Human monocytes tolerant to LPS retain the ability to phagocytose bacteria and generate reactive oxygen species BJMBR
Fernandes,M.L.; Mendes,M.E.; Brunialti,M.K.C.; Salomão,R..
Tolerance to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) occurs when animals or cells exposed to LPS become hyporesponsive to a subsequent challenge with LPS. This mechanism is believed to be involved in the down-regulation of cellular responses observed in septic patients. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate LPS-induced monocyte tolerance of healthy volunteers using whole blood. The detection of intracellular IL-6, bacterial phagocytosis and reactive oxygen species (ROS) was determined by flow cytometry, using anti-IL-6-PE, heat-killed Staphylococcus aureus stained with propidium iodide and 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate, respectively. Monocytes were gated in whole blood by combining FSC and SSC parameters and CD14-positive staining. The exposure to...

Comparison of the effects of triamcinolone acetonide or platelet-rich plasma on expression of extracellular matrix-related genes in equine healthy chondrocytes in vitro Ciência Rural
Palma,Heloisa Einloft; Gallio,Miguel; Silva,Gabriele Biavaschi da; Cantarelli,Camila; Bertolin,Kalyne; Wolkmer,Patrícia; Wergutz,Julien; Krause,Luciana Maria Fontanari; Krause,Alexandre; Antoniazzi,Alfredo Quites; Brass,Karin Erica; Corte,Flavio Desessards De La.
ABSTRACT: In healthy cartilage, chondrocytes maintain an expression of collagens and proteoglycans and are sensitive to growth factors and cytokines that either enhance or reduce type II collagen synthesis. In osteoarthritis, pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-6, induce overexpression of metalloproteinases (MMP) and decreasing synthesis of aggrecan. Use of chondroprotectors agents, such as Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and triamcinolone (TA) are alternatives to reduce the progression of joint damage. In this study, we used chondrocytes extracted from metacarpophalangeal joints of healthy horses as the experimental model. Cells were treated in vitro with PRP or TA. No differences were observed between these treatments in comparison to the control group...

TNF-α and IL-6 immunohistochemistry in rat renal tissue experimentaly infected with Leptospira interrogans serovar Canicola J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Marinho,M; Monteiro,CMR; Peiró,JR; Machado,GF; Oliveira-Júnior,IS.
Leptospirosis is a public health problem worldwide and its etiology remains unclear. Its pathogenesis involves a complex interaction between host and infecting microorganism. The inflammatory reaction that controls the infection process also underscores many pathophysiological events occurring in leptospirosis. We investigated the presence of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in renal tissues by immunohistochemical and histopathological examination in animals experimentally inoculated with Leptospira serovar Canicola. All the tests were carried out 2, 7, 14, 21 or 28 days after inoculation. Although TNF-α and IL-6 had been detected in tissues throughout the observation period, these cytokines appeared more intensely during the...
