Efficiency of RAPD and ISSR markers system in accessing genetic variation of rice bean (Vigna umbellata) landraces Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Muthusamy,Saraladevi; Kanagarajan,Selvaraju; Ponnusamy,Shanmugasundaram.
Vigna umbellata (Thunb.) Ohwi and Ohashi commonly known as rice bean or climbing mountain bean is under-exploited tropical legume. Genetic variation between 10 landraces of rice bean was evaluated using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and inter simple sequence repeats (ISSR) markers. Among these markers, RAPD primers generated 987 amplification products of which 719 were polymorphic and ISSR markers produced 479 amplification products, out of which 296 were polymorphic. RAPD fingerprinting detected more polymorphic loci (70.30%) than the ISSR fingerprinting (61.79%). Mean PIC (polymorphism information content) for each of these marker systems (0.243 for RAPD and 0.203 for ISSR) suggested that both the marker systems were equally effective in...

When physical oceanography meets population genetics: The case study of the genetic/evolutionary discontinuity in the endangered goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara, Perciformes: Epinephelidae) with comments on the conservation of the species ArchiMer
Benevides, E. A.; Vallinoto, M. N. S.; Fetter Filho, A. F. H.; De Souza, J. R. B.; Silva-oliveira, G.; Freitas, M. O.; Ferreira, B. P.; Hostim-silva, M.; Bertoncini, A. A.; Blanchard, Fabian; Torres, R. A..
Epinephelus itajara is one of the marine fish species most threatened for extinction and it is considered to be "critically endangered" by the IUCN. The present study evaluated the genetic diversity of the species and the genetic/evolutionary relationships of its populations along the Atlantic coast of South America. The results indicate relatively reduced genetic variation, re-emphasizing the low adaptive potential of the species. One of the populations presented relatively high degrees of genetic diversity and it is evolutionary isolated from the all other populations. The evidences indicate the existence of two Evolutionarily Significant Units comprising E. itajara in the Atlantic coast of South America and the conservation prospects for the species...
