Importance of Ionic and Osmotic Components of Salt Stress on the Germination of Four Quinua (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) Selections Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Delatorre-Herrera,José; Pinto,Manuel.
The influence of the components of saline stress (osmotic and ionic factors) were evaluated during the germination of four quinua (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) selections in Chile, two collected in the arid northern highland region with saline soils (Amarilla and Roja) and the other two from the rainy southern region with non-saline soils (Hueque and Pucura). The seeds were treated with different saline concentrations (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2 M NaCl). Germination kinetics shows that the control treatments of the four selections reach 100% germination. With application of 0.4 M NaCl (LD50max) germination was reduced by 53% in the Amarilla selection and 89.9% in Hueque. The germination rate was lower for the seeds from non-saline areas, which reached...

Ecological aspects of Byrsonima intermedia in riparian microenvironments PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Magalhães, Allan Freitas; Carvalho, Dulcinéia de; Silva Júnior, Jessé Marques da; Guimarães, João Carlos Costa.
This work aimed to better understand the ecology of Byrsonima intermedia A. Juss. and the mechanisms for initial establishment of this species in riparian microenvironments. The study was conducted at Peti Environmental Station - PETI (19o53'34.1"; 43o21'52.6"), São Gonçalo do Rio Abaixo, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The ecological parameters studied were: moisture at dispersion (fruit, seed and diaspore) and after dispersion (imbibition; initial growth and development). Diaspores and seeds present different behaviors. The faster water absorption process was in seeds without endocarp. The total growth length from embryo until seedling was 21 days. Seedlings establishes preferentially in flooded environments.

The seed coat as a modulator of seed-environment relationships in Fabaceae Rev. Bras. Bot.
SOUZA,FRANCISCO H. DÜBBERN DE; MARCOS-FILHO,JÚLIO.
The seed coat is one of the main determinants of seed germination, vigor and longevity potentials. It is also intimately associated with temporal and spatial dispersion of seed germination in a large number of plant species. The understanding of its properties and characteristics may explain, anticipate or even allow the modification of seed performance under certain environmental conditions. There is a growing volume of evidence associating seed coat characteristics to specific seed problems. For example, susceptibility to mechanical damage is related to lignin content of the seed coat, while seed longevity and tolerance to field weathering depends on seed coat integrity. Seed performance in many legumes has been associated with certain seed coat...

Soluble sugars and germination of Annona emarginata (Schltdl.) H. Rainer seeds submitted to immersion in GA3 up to different water contents Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Gimenez,Juliana Iassia; Ferreira,Gisela; Corsato,Jaqueline Malagutti.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different water contents achieved by Annona emarginata (Schltdl.) H. Rainer seeds during immersion in GA3 solutions, in variation of soluble sugars levels and germination. Seeds with 10% of initial water content were submitted to imbibition in GA3 solutions with concentrations of 0; 250; 500; 750 and 1000 mg L-1 and when they reached the water content of 15%, 20%, 25%, 30% and 35%, the quantification of soluble sugars levels and germination test were performed. Seeds immersed up to they reach 15% of water with GA3 and immersed up to the water acquisition of 20% without GA3, presented higher soluble sugars levels and germination percentage, which were decreased when the seeds reached 30% and 35% of...

Water uptake by Annona diversifolia Saff. and A. purpurea Moc. & sessé ex dunal seeds (Annonaceae) Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Ferreira,Gisela; Esquinca,Alma Rosa González; De-La-Cruz-Chacón,Ivan.
Annonaceae seeds are known by presenting dormancy mechanisms, whose reports ranging from coating impermeable to the physiological dormancy. By this way, the present study aimed to evaluate water uptake in Annona diversifolia Saff and Annona purpurea Moc & Sessé ex Dunal seeds. For this study, seeds were placed under immersion in distilled water, and used four replicates of 25 seeds of each species, which were weighed during the 480 hours that were immersed. To determine the place of purchase of water, Annona diversifolia seeds were sealed with paraffin at different locations. Based on the results, seeds from both species reached the phases I and II of water uptake, which indicates they are not hard; however, germination (Phase III) was not reached....

Hydration of carrot seeds in relation to osmotic potential of solution and conditioning method Rev. bras. sementes
Pereira,Márcio Dias; Dias,Denise Cunha Fernandes dos Santos; Dias,Luiz Antonio dos Santos; Araújo,Eduardo Fontes.
The objective of this study was to monitor carrot seed hydration in water and osmotic solutions to define appropriate conditions for priming treatment. Two Brasília cultivar carrot seed lots were used. Seeds were imbibed in -1.0 and -1.2 MPa PEG 6000 osmotic solutions and in distilled water, in an incubator BOD at 20ºC, using two different hydration methods: imbibition in moistened paper towel sheets and in aerated solutions. The imbibition curves for each seed lot were drawn after determining seed moisture content at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96 hours hydration in water and after 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, 168, 192, 216, 264, 312 hours hydration in PEG 6000 solutions. Seed hydration in distilled water was faster than in PEG 6000...

Morphology and germination of Acmella oleracea L. R. Jansen under different temperatures and photoperiods Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Sarmento,Erivanessa Costa Sousa; Pereira,Kleane Targino Oliveira; Oliveira,Fernando Sarmento de; Leal,Caio César Pereira; Torres,Salvador Barros; Dutra,Alek Sandro.
ABSTRACT The objective was to evaluate the physical characteristics and physiological behavior of A. oleracea seeds during imbibition and germination, under different temperatures and photoperiods, as well as to determine the duration of the germination test. For this, biometric parameters (length, width and thickness) were measured in 100 seeds and thousand-seed weight was determined. In addition, the external structures of seeds and seedlings were described and the imbibition curve was monitored. Subsequently, the germination test was conducted at temperatures of 20, 25, 30, 35, 20-30 and 25-35 ºC, under constant and alternating light and dark photoperiods (12 h), arranged in 6 x 3 factorial scheme, with four replicates of 50 seeds. Seeds were sown in...
