| Sustainable development has become an overall policy objective in Europe. The sustainability transition is seen as the process of coming to terms with sustainability in all its ecological, social, economic, and institutional dimensions. This challenging process is as much about new ways of knowing as it is about resource management and product innovation. | To meet the challenges of poverty and environmental sustainability, a different kind of research will be needed. This research will need to embrace the complexity of these systems by redirecting the objectives of research toward enhancing adaptive capacity, by incorporating more participatory approaches, by embracing key principles such as multi-scale analysis and intervention, and by the use of a variety of tools (e.g., systems analysis, information management tools, and impact assessment tools). Integration will be the key concept in the new approach; integration across scales, components, stakeholders, and disciplines. Integrated approaches, as described in this Special Feature, will require changes in the culture and organization of research. |

| According to the U.S. National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), federal action to manipulate habitat for species conservation requires an environmental impact statement, which should integrate natural, physical, economic, and social sciences in planning and decision making. Nonetheless, most impact assessments focus disproportionately on physical or ecological impacts rather than integrating ecological and socioeconomic components. | Ex ante impact assessment can help in structuring the analysis of human-environment interactions thereby supporting land use decision making for sustainable development. The contributions to this special feature focus on some of the challenges of making land use impact assessment operational for policy making. | Although invasive alien species have been identified as the second greatest threat to biodiversity after habitat loss, characterizing and quantifying their impacts on native species and habitats remains a fundamental problem in conservation biology. Here, I review the techniques that are currently used to assess the impact of invasive alien species on biodiversity, highlighting both their uses in invasive species ecology and their limitations in establishing a causal relationship. | Resumo - Este trabalho apresenta avaliações de impactos socioambientais da adoção de boas práticas zootécnicas e de gestão na produção de ovinos e caprinos no município de Tauá – CE, entre janeiro/2017 e dezembro/2018. Utilizou-se o sistema Ambitec-Agro, composto por matrizes de ponderação multicritério com 148 indicadores, relativos a 27 critérios de desempenho, agrupados em sete aspectos: Eficiência Tecnológica, Qualidade Ambiental, Respeito ao Consumidor, Emprego, Renda, Saúde e Gestão da Propriedade. While a number of international treaties call for the implementation of EAF, there are still gaps in the underlying methodology. | CORDIO activities were conducted in seven of the Indian Ocean Islands namely, Comores, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte, Réunion, Rodregues, and Seychelles. On each island biophysical and socio-economic assessments were conducted which have strengthened the annual monitoring of the reefs and collected baseline data for the socio-economic monitoring. In addition, a rapid assessment of the risk posed to island communities of ciguatera poisoning caused by potential increases in abundance of ciguatoxin producing dinoflagellates following bleaching was carried out.
