| Forest fire is an important issue in New Caledonia. During the dry season, forest fire can remove vegetation from large areas (from 10 000 to 30 000 ha per year on average), leaving metal-rich soils uncover and more exposed to runoff. The impact of forest fires on the chemical and microbiological quality of water has been poorly studied in New Caledonia, either for river water bodies or coastal lagoon water bodies. The purpose of this document is to review the current knowledge on forest fires impacts on water quality that has been documented in the worldwide literature, a topic of increasing importance in the context of global warming. |
