Relationship among grain-size, plant communities, and fluvial and eolian processes in a piedmont of the central Andes in Argentina Ecología austral
González Loyarte,María M.
The relationship among modern geomorphological processes, grain-size of surface sediments, and vegetation was analyzed in an alluvial fan in the piedmont of the Cordillera Frontal (Andes Mountains). Statistical parameters of grain-size distribution were calculated according to a standard graphical method. Plant communities were studied by applying a standard floristic-ecological method. A sensitivity analysis of grain-size parameters and plant communities in relation to geomorphological processes was made, based on literature, to compare results. Indicator species of fluvial, eolian and soil erosion processes were identified. Contemporary surface modifications by fluvial and eolian processes produce distinct surface sediment size parameters (mean diameter,...

Freshwater sponges (Porifera, Demospongiae) indicators of some coastal habitats in South America: redescriptions and key to identification Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Volkmer-Ribeiro,Cecilia; Machado,Vanessa de Souza.
Surveys for freshwater sponges were performed at several water bodies at sandy environments along a north-south direction of particularly the Brazilian coastal line. The results allowed for the distinction of four different species-specific environments along this coastal border. The main fact considered was the dominant or the sole recurrent occurrence of a single sponge species at one particular habitat. The first one is that of the lagoonal mesohaline habitats at the tropical and subtropical realms, indicated by Spongilla alba Carter, 1849. The second one refers to shallow ponds among dunes at the tropical area indicated by Corvoheteromeyenia heterosclera (Ezcurra de Drago, 1974). The third one is that of also shallow ponds close to the dune belt at the...

Mise en evidence et evaluation de l'enrichissement bacterien du film de surface des eaux littorales d'effluents urbains ArchiMer
Beucher, M; Plusquellec, A; Legal, Y; Cleret, J.
Sea water samples were collected in the vicinity of urban non-treated, urban treated and industrial outfalls. The samples belonged to two differents types: the first one consisted of the surface film, the second was the corresponding water at 50 cm depth. The enumeration of the bacteria in both types of samples indicated a significant concentration of the mesophilic flora and of the indicators of fecal pollution in the surface film. The value of the concentrating factor depended largely on the nature of the sewage and did not reflect differences between the various bacterial groups. At one of the stations a very significant regression was demonstrated between surface sample and depth sample.

Impact biosedimentologique d'amenagements portuaires en estuaire de Seine ArchiMer
Desprez, M; Dupont, J.
Many harbour installations have reduced the intertidal zone and involved estuary choking by marine sediments. In 1980, weirs were built in dikes of navigation channels. This study strikes the balance of their impact on estuarine biofacies and points out indicator species for the study of biological impact of environmental design.

Comparaison de methodes directes (microscopiques) et indirectes (par mise en culture) dans l'evaluation d'une pollution bacterienne d'origine fecale. Etude preliminaire ArchiMer
Munro, P; Bianchi, M.
Cells of two serotypes of Escherichia coli (O26B6 and 0111B4) were counted using epifluorescence and immunofluorescence microscopy (nonavalent serum) and plate count on specific medium. Values from indirect counts were 10 fold smaller than those from both microscopic counts. In a sample of sea water from an area receiving a fecal pollution, the highest number of bacteria was obtained by epifluorescence microscopy. In that case, the number of cells counted by immunofluorescence microscopy was 10 fold smaller than the number of bacteria able to grow on the medium. It could be due to: the diversity of the natural community, the possibility to other bacteria than E. coli to grow on the used culture medium, the restrictiveness of the serum for "pathogenic...

Analyse bacteriologique de l'eau par mesure potentiometrique de la reduction de l'acide lipoique ArchiMer
Charriere, G; Jouenne, T; Junter, G.
A simple potentiometric technique to detect and enumerate the bio-indicators of water contamination is described. The technique consists in measuring the redox potential of a specific culture medium saturated with oxygen where bacteria are incubated in presence of lipoic acid (LA). These micro-organisms reduce LA to dihydrolipoic acid, giving rise to an important potential drop in the system. This potentiometric "signal" reveals the presence of active metabolic bacteria in the medium. The major assets of potentiometric measurements in presence of LA lies in the reliability and intelligibility of the results (the redox phenomenon being qualitatively and quantitatively studied), associated to a very simple technology. Futhermore, this technique is perfectly...

Underwater video offers new insights into community structure in the Grande Vasière (Bay of Biscay) ArchiMer
Merillet, Laurene; Robert, Marianne; Salaun, Michele; Schuck, Lucie; Mouchet, Maud; Kopp, Dorothee.
Based on towed underwater videos, diversity patterns and their main environmental and anthropogenic drivers were assessed in the “Grande Vasière” (northeast Bay of Biscay), one of the main French fishing grounds. The density of bentho-demersal megafauna was recorded along 152 transects in this area in 2014. The highest number of taxa and densities were observed on the external margin of the Grande Vasière, in deep areas with low fishing intensity. The highest levels of taxa evenness were located on the central and coastal parts that are shallower and exposed to medium to high trawling intensity. Multivariate analysis identified four different communities driven by fishing intensity, depth, sediment type and bottom current speed. We distinguished three...

The behaviour of F specific bacteriophage in depurating shellfish with reference to their use as pollution indicator organisms ArchiMer
Lees, D; Dore, W.
The behaviour of sex-pilli specific (F+) bacteriophage during the depuration process was investigated using Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and edible mussels (Mytilus edulis) naturally contaminated with untreated sewage. F+ bacteriophage was eliminated considerably slower than E. coli. This effect was most pronounced in oysters which showed average T90 bacteriophage values of 62.5 hours compared with 11 hours for E. coli. F+ bacteriophage in mussels was largely confined to the digestive tract. The majority of E. coli were similarly located but, in contrast, counts were also distributed throughout the other internal tissues. Investigation of ultra-violet (UV) dosage showed that the difference in depuration rate was unlikely to be due to the higher...

BIGORNO.
This report presents the results obtained during the BIGORNO project whose main objective is to overcome knowledge gaps on the biocenoses of the southern sub-region "Bay of Biscay" to propose a sampling protocol adapted to biogeographic and environmental specific conditions. A stratified random sampling design considering spatial heterogeneity has been implemented. Biodiversity was considered on 0.1 m²quadrats. These data have revealed the organization of benthic communities and the relevant taxa to be considered (species or assemblages of indicator species) in the context of establishing perennial monitoring of intertidal habitats. Proposals are made to implement the descriptors and indicators defined in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).

Grow-out mariculture techniques in tropical waters: A case study of problems and solutions in Hong Kong. ArchiMer
Wu, R; Lee, J.
Raft culture is practised and trash fish is being used as feed in Hong Kong. Culture space is limited and most of the culture sites are over-crowded. Food conversion ratio is poor (about 10-15), grow-out mortality is high (30-50%) and fish kills caused by oxygen depletions, algal blooms and red tides occur frequently. Disease and water pollution are also problems.

Inadequacy of bacterial indicators for assessing elimination rates of viruses from molluscan shellfish ArchiMer
Burkhardt, W; Watkins, W; Rippey, S.
The reported incidence of shellfish-borne illness in the United States increased dramatically during the last decade. Most of the outbreaks are attributed to diseases of viral aetiology. These human health problems result primarily from the ingestion of raw shellfish which have accumulated enteric pathogens from environmental waters or from wet storage facilities. Our studies have demonstrated that hard-shelled clams concentrate different indicator micro-organisms at variable and unpredictable rates during the year. In temperate waters, this has been observed at two abbreviated periods in mid-spring and again in late fall when accumulation rates increased dramatically. Moreover, these rates were not generally coincident for viruses and bacteria. In...

Biodiversity patterns, environmental drivers and indicator species on a High-temperature Hydrothermal edifice, mid-Atlantic ridge ArchiMer
Sarrazin, Jozee; Legendre, Pierre; De Busserolles, Fanny; Fabri, Marie-claire; Guilini, Katja; Ivanenko, Viatcheslav N.; Morineaux, Marie; Vanreusel, Ann; Sarradin, Pierre-marie.
Knowledge on quantitative faunal distribution patterns of hydrothermal communities in slow-spreading vent fields is particularly scarce, despite the importance of these ridges in the global mid-ocean system. This study assessed the composition, abundance and diversity of 12 benthic faunal assemblages from various locations on the Eiffel Tower edifice (Lucky Strike vent field, Mid-Atlantic Ridge) and investigated the role of key environmental conditions (temperature, total dissolved iron (TdFe), sulfide (TdS), copper (TdCu) and pH) on the distribution of macro- and meiofaunal species at small spatial scales (< 1 m). There were differences in macro- and meiofaunal community structure between the different sampling locations, separating the hydrothermal...

Do we protect biological originality in protected areas? A new index and an application to the Bonifacio Strait Natural Reserve ArchiMer
Mouillot, D; Culioli, J; Pelletier, Dominique; Tomasini, J.
Changes in biodiversity may disrupt the ecological functions performed by species assemblages. Hence, we urgently need to examine the implications of biodiversity loss not only in terms of species conservation but also in terms of sustainability of ecosystem services. The ability of protected areas to maintain local species richness has been clearly demonstrated. However, preserving goods and services provided by ecosystems requires not only the conservation of species richness but also the conservation of the most 'original' species, i.e. the ones with the highest average rarity of their attributes which are likely to perform some unique functions in ecosystems. We proposed a new conservation of biological originality (CBO) index as well as associated...

Annelid assemblages in soft bottoms subjected to human impact in the Urias estuary (Sinaloa, Mexico) ArchiMer
Mendez, N.
The annelid fauna inhabiting soft bottoms was analysed during February and April, 1997 in the Urfas estuary which is mostly surrounded by mangrove swamps, but is also subjected to the effect of several anthropogenic activities, Classification and ordination techniques were used to perform the characterisation of the system based on the annelid assemblages according to environmental variables (mainly organic matter content and percentage of mud). Three zones were found: (1) 'very polluted zone', in front of a slaughterhouse and a fish processing factory with a total lack of macrofauna due to the strong enrichment of the sediment in organic matters (2) 'polluted zones', characterised by the sporadic presence of oligochaetes in front of a domestic sewage...

Phytotherapies in motion: French Guiana as a case study for cross-cultural ethnobotanical hybridization ArchiMer
Tareau, M.-a.; Bonnefond, A.; Palisse, M.; Odonne, G..
Background French Guiana is characterized by a very multicultural population, made up of formerly settled groups (Amerindians, Maroons, Creoles) and more recent migrants (mostly from Latin America and the Caribbean). It is the ideal place to try to understand the influence of intercultural exchanges on the composition of medicinal floras and the evolution of phytotherapies under the effect of cross-culturalism. Methods A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used. Semi-directive interviews were conducted in 12 localities of French Guiana’s coast between January 2016 and June 2017, and the responses to all closed questions collected during the survey were computerized in an Excel spreadsheet to facilitate quantitative processing. Butterflies for the new millennium: mapping butterfly distributions in Britain (Lepidoptera) Naturalis
Fox, R.; Warren, M.; Harding, P.; Asher, J.; Jeffcoate, G.; Jeffcoate, S..
Butterflies for the new millennium: mapping butterfly distributions in Britain (Lepidoptera) Butterflies for the New Millennium is the largest and most comprehensive survey of butterfly distribution ever undertaken in Britain and Ireland. The number of contributing recorders, the coverage achieved and the number and quality of distribution records generated far exceed those available for any other invertebrate taxon. The data thus provide a unique insight into the effects of habitat degradation and climate change on a high profile insect group. The results of the first five years of the survey (1995-1999) have been analysed to assess broad-scale distribution changes over the past two decades and the past two centuries. In both time periods, the British...
