Assessing Viability and Sustainability: a Systems-based Approach for Deriving Comprehensive Indicator Sets Ecology and Society
Bossel, Hartmut; Sustainable Systems Research; H.Bossel@T-online.de.
Performance assessment in holistic approaches such as integrated natural resource management has to deal with a complex set of interacting and self-organizing natural and human systems and agents, all pursuing their own "interests" while also contributing to the development of the total system. Performance indicators must therefore reflect the viability of essential component systems as well as their contributions to the viability and performance of other component systems and the total system under study. A systems-based derivation of a comprehensive set of performance indicators first requires the identification of essential component systems, their mutual (often hierarchical or reciprocal) relationships, and their contributions to the performance of...

Impact of Policy Scenarios in Irrigated Agriculture of River Guadalquivir Basin (Southern Spain) AgEcon
Vecino, Julio Berbel; Lopez, Maria Jos; Gutierrez, Carlos.
This paper integrates indicators of environmental, social and economic impact of a range of policy scenarios through the use of Multicriteria and Multiperiod Programming. The case study is irrigated agriculture in the basin of the River Guadalquivir, and the policy scenarios combined Common Agricultural Policy and Water Framework Directive implementation in the period 2001-2010. The model is applied to a representative number of farming systems that attempt to offer a satisfactory description of the productive diversity of the basin. Results indicate that there are significant differences in the impact in the three dimensions (environmental, social and economic), according to the possible evolution of policy, market and technical futures. We believe that...

RISE, a Tool for Holistic Sustainability Assessment at the Farm Level AgEcon
Hani, Fritz; Braga, Francesco S.; Stampfli, Andreas; Keller, Thomas; Fischer, Matthew; Porsche, Hans.
Sustainability must be adopted as a key principle in global markets. Numerous studies have been conducted to evaluate the degree of sustainability on a national and local level. However, only little information for single farm assessment is currently available. The present paper introduces a tool, the "Response-Inducing Sustainability Evaluation" (RISE), which allows an easy assessment at the farm level. It is system-oriented and offers a holistic approach for advice, education and planning. The model covers ecological, economical and social aspects by defining 12 indicators for Energy, Water, Soil, Biodiversity, Emission Potential, Plant Protection, Waste and Residues, Cash Flow, Farm Income, Investments, Local Economy and Social Situation. For each...
