Seroprevalence of Rickettsia rickettsii and Rickettsia parkeri in dogs during a Brazilian Spotted Fever outbreak in the State of Rio de Janeiro Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Poubel,I.T.; Cunha,N.C.; Fonseca,A.B.M.; Pinter,A.; Fonseca,A.H.; Cordeiro,M.D.; Almosny,N.R.P..
ABSTRACT The present paper is the first to perform this evaluation in dogs from the cities of Natividade, Porciuncula and Varre-Sai. The aim of this study is to search for Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia in canine sera using indirect immunofluorescence assay and to identify the probable causative agent of sera reactions in animals. Of the 253 sampled canines, 67.59% (171/253) were seroreactive for Rickettsia rickettsii and 11.07% (28/253) for Rickettsia parkeri, both in dilution 1:64. Titration of tested sera against R. rickettsii antigens reached 1:131.072 and, for R. parkeri, 1:4.096. We conclude that dogs are important sentinels for R. rickettsii infection, and can be infected regardless of sex, age, the habit of visiting woodlands or being in direct...

Role of laboratory in rapid diagnosis of atypical mumps BJID
Vandana,KE; Arunkumar,G; Bairy,Indira.
Fairly large number of mumps virus infections present atypically without parotitis leading to delay in diagnosis and increased morbidity. Awareness of such presentations and inclusion of serological test for detecting IgM-specific antibodies could help in solving diagnostic dilemma, especially in unvaccinated individuals from developing countries.

Detection of anti: Rickettsia spp. antibodies in domestic chickens of extensive breeding in an endemic area for spotted fever in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Ciência Rural
Maciel,Jonas Fernandes; Krawczak,Felipe da Silva; Oliveira,Caroline Sobotyk de; Moraes-Filho,Jonas; Labruna,Marcelo Bahia; Botton,Sônia de Avila; Vogel,Fernanda Silveira Flores; Sangioni,Luis Antonio.
The goal of this study was to investigate anti-Rickettsia spp. antibodies in sera of domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) of extensive breeding in Cerro Largo county, considered an endemic area for spotted fever in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Three hundred blood samples were collected and anti-Rickettsia spp. antibodies were evaluated by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) in the sera obtained. The occurrence of anti-Rickettsia spp. antibodies detected in this study was 1.33% (4/300), with endpoint titers ranging from 64 to 256 for Rickettsia rickettsiii, R. parkeri and/or R. bellii. The results suggest these domestic chickens do not participate as a reservoir and/or amplifying host in the epidemiology of spotted fever in that...
