The purpose of this work was to develop a hydrological model for the simulation of the water balance in agricultural areas. The model uses a double exponential equation to represent the rainfall profile and uses the Green-Ampt-Mein-Larson equation to estimate the soil water infiltration rate. To evaluate the model, monthly and yearly rainfall and runoff data were obtained from four experimental plots located at the State University of Santa Catarina, UDESC, in the period from 2003 to 2008. The four treatments were bare soil (BS), conventional tillage (CT), minimum tillage (MT) and no-tillage (NT). The simulation was carried out using two synthetic rainfall series, one adjusted on a monthly basis (SAMB) and the other adjusted on a daily basis (SADB). The... |

This study aimed to estimate the constant infiltration rates from paddy growing area of a micro watershed located in the hilly state of Sikkim, India. Double ring infiltometer test was used for the field measurement of infiltration rates. The observed infiltration rates were compared with predicted values obtained by Horton, Philip, Kostiokov and Green-Ampt infiltration models. The suitability analysis of models was checked through statistical tools namely coefficient of determination and standard error and the best model was identified for the paddy fields of hill topography. The soil samples were collected for the estimation of soil moisture content, bulk density and soil texture analysis. Soil texture was sandy loam to loamy sand within the micro... |

Biochar is considered as an option to ameliorate soil functions, by improving soil physical and hydraulic soil properties. This study investigated the effect of biochar and of wetting and drying cycles on the water infiltration at laboratory and at a hypothetical watershed scenario. In the laboratory, test samples with 2.5 and 5% (by dry mass) of a mango-wood biochar were added to a sandy and sandy loam soil material. Cumulative infiltration was determined after simulated intense wetting and drying cycles, by drying the samples at 30°C for three consecutive days. Additionally, biochar amended soil hydraulic parameters, obtained at the laboratory, were used to simulate the water discharge of a hypothetical watershed, with the Soil and Water Assessment Tool... |

ABSTRACT The use of sensors and optical fibers for monitoring structures is continuously growing. Strains, displacements, accelerations, temperatures are just a few of the monitoring possibilities. In the case of dam structures, concrete face rockfill dams constitute a type of structures where the monitoring of water infiltrations is of particular interest. In large structures of this type, opening of slab joints is a common effect of general strain distributions, but crack formation may also occur as a result of high compressive stresses, during and after the reservoir filling stage. In this context, this paper verifies, experimentally, the applicability and the response of a distributed fiber optic monitoring system in the identification of infiltration... |

Studies that involve soil attributes variability help the analysis of the behavior of hydrophysical attributes in space, to support the decision-making process within the conception of precision agriculture. The aim of the present paper was to characterize the spatial variability of the surface infiltration and its relation to some soil physical attributes. The sampling was done with a rectangular mesh of 64 points with perpendicular distances of 52 m x 45 m between sampling points. The attributes studied were bulk density, contents of sand, silt and clay, soil moisture, cumulative infiltration, basic infiltration, sorptivity, and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and geostatistics, identifying the... |

The effects of supplementary irrigation on soil chemical and physical properties were studied in 21 locations in the north of the rolling pampa region of Argentina. The chemical and physical variables were measured in top soil (0-100 mm) to compare irrigated and non-irrigated soils. Chemical variables were: electrical conductivity (EC), pH, exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), and organic mater content. Physical variables included structural index (SI) and percolation index (PI) measured in the laboratory, as well as infiltration, runoff, and soil losses, measured in the field with a small portable rainfall simulator. Water quality was established according to its chemical composition and Riverside USA classification. In irrigated soils, chemical data... |

ABSTRACT Soil compaction in agricultural areas has greatly increased in recent decades due to intensive farming practices, including short-cycle crops and machinery intensification. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of management systems on the physical quality of a dystrophic Yellow Oxisol, in the Cerrado region of Brazil. Treatments consisted of five soil management systems, with five replications (native forest [control], slash-and-burn agriculture, pasture, no-tillage, and conventional tillage). Data analysis was performed using a completely randomized experimental design. All systems were analyzed for soil density, macroporosity, microporosity, total porosity, hydraulic conductivity, infiltration, water retention curve, penetration resistance,... |

Forest structure and tree species can have a significant impact on total atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition; for example, deciduous forests have higher N requirements than coniferous forests. However, knowledge about the effect of the conversion of native Chilean vegetation cover by exotic plantations on N cycling is scarce. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the replacement of a Nothofagus obliqua native forest by a Pinus radiata plantation in southern Chile on the chemistry of throughfall, stemflow, soil water infiltration and percolation. Pinus radiata stemflow was more acidic (pH 4.7) than precipitation (pH 5.2) and throughfall (pH 5.6), while in the Nothofagus forest stemflow and throughfall pH were 6.3 and 6.1, respectively. In the... |
