The purpose of this work was to develop a hydrological model for the simulation of the water balance in agricultural areas. The model uses a double exponential equation to represent the rainfall profile and uses the Green-Ampt-Mein-Larson equation to estimate the soil water infiltration rate. To evaluate the model, monthly and yearly rainfall and runoff data were obtained from four experimental plots located at the State University of Santa Catarina, UDESC, in the period from 2003 to 2008. The four treatments were bare soil (BS), conventional tillage (CT), minimum tillage (MT) and no-tillage (NT). The simulation was carried out using two synthetic rainfall series, one adjusted on a monthly basis (SAMB) and the other adjusted on a daily basis (SADB). The...

Estimation of infiltration rate of a paddy growing area in a micro watershed of Sikkim, India 111
Patle, G T.
This study aimed to estimate the constant infiltration rates from paddy growing area of a micro watershed located in the hilly state of Sikkim, India. Double ring infiltometer test was used for the field measurement of infiltration rates. The observed infiltration rates were compared with predicted values obtained by Horton, Philip, Kostiokov and Green-Ampt infiltration models. The suitability analysis of models was checked through statistical tools namely coefficient of determination and standard error and the best model was identified for the paddy fields of hill topography. The soil samples were collected for the estimation of soil moisture content, bulk density and soil texture analysis. Soil texture was sandy loam to loamy sand within the micro...

Role of charcoal addition on infiltration processes and soil water content characteristics of a sandy loam soil 111
Villagra-Mendoza, Karolina.
Terra preta (TP) is a soil amendment which is enriched with powdered charcoal, with nutrient sources from organic residues, and that constitutes a resource to improve soils for sustainable land use systems (Glaser, 2007).  Terra preta-dark soil is inspired by the highly successful historic practice of soil building in the Amazon and other parts of the world.  This work involves a relatively unexplored topic: the comprehension of infiltration processes and soil water content characteristics in a sandy loam soil combined with different fractions of terra preta amendments.  This analysis contributes to a better understanding of the relationship between fractions of charcoal in terms of terra preta content and soil water holding capacity.  First, a physical...

Simulated effect of wetting/drying periods for two textural soils amended with biochar at a catchment scale 111
Villagra-Mendoza, Karolina; Carvajal-Vanegas, Dorian; Beck-Broichsitter, Steffen; Horn, Rainer.
Biochar is considered as an option to ameliorate soil functions, by improving soil physical and hydraulic soil properties. This study investigated the effect of biochar and of wetting and drying cycles on the water infiltration at laboratory and at a hypothetical watershed scenario. In the laboratory, test samples with 2.5 and 5% (by dry mass) of a mango-wood biochar were added to a sandy and sandy loam soil material. Cumulative infiltration was determined after simulated intense wetting and drying cycles, by drying the samples at 30°C for three consecutive days. Additionally, biochar amended soil hydraulic parameters, obtained at the laboratory, were used to simulate the water discharge of a hypothetical watershed, with the Soil and Water Assessment Tool...

Extending the integrated Richards Equation method to new boundary conditions: model description and validation 115
Yang,Dejun; Zhang,Tuqiao; Zhang,Kefeng; Lei,Shaogang.
There is a need for developing an accurate and simple method, which can be widely used in agro-hydrological models. The Integrated Richards Equation method is a good and simple method to simulate cyclic movement of water in the soil-atmosphere system. However, this method still has some unsolved problems and it is needed for further development if used in agro-hydrological simulation. In this study, the Integrated Richards Equation method was further developed for the agro-hydrological simulation by introducing the commonly used soil hydraulic functions, top and lower boundary conditions. Infiltration numerical experiments and a lab evaporation experiment were used for the validation of the model's capabilities of modelling infiltration and evaporation,...

Monitoring structures with optical fibers: infiltration detection 42
MARCONCIN,LILIANE R.; MACHADO,ROBERTO D.; LACERDA,LUIZ A. DE; AUFLEGER,MARKUS.
ABSTRACT The use of sensors and optical fibers for monitoring structures is continuously growing. Strains, displacements, accelerations, temperatures are just a few of the monitoring possibilities. In the case of dam structures, concrete face rockfill dams constitute a type of structures where the monitoring of water infiltrations is of particular interest. In large structures of this type, opening of slab joints is a common effect of general strain distributions, but crack formation may also occur as a result of high compressive stresses, during and after the reservoir filling stage. In this context, this paper verifies, experimentally, the applicability and the response of a distributed fiber optic monitoring system in the identification of infiltration...

Short-term evaluation of non-absorbable microgranular hydroxyapatite infiltration in the guinea pig subepidermal abdominal region 56
Xavier,A.P.; Schellini,S.A.; Aragon,F.F.; Padovani,C.R.; Taga,E.M..
Non-absorbable microgranular hydroxyapatite was infiltrated into the subepidermal abdominal region of guinea pigs in order to assess the possibility of using this material to correct deficiencies in orbital volume. Microgranular hydroxyapatite (2.0 ml) was subepidermally infiltrated into the abdominal region of 20 guinea pigs. The animals were divided into four experimental groups of 5 animals each, which were killed 7 (G1), 15 (G2), 30 (G3) and 60 (G4) days after infiltration. The area and the largest and smallest diameters of the nodules formed by infiltration were evaluated at the site of infiltration and histological examination was performed. The mean granuloma area was similar in all groups. Histopathological examination showed that the material...

CHANGES IN PHYSICAL QUALITY OF OXISOLS UNDER DIFFERENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS IN THE BRAZILIAN CERRADO 70
Feitosa,Carlos E. L.; Costa,Pedro H. dos S.; Meneses,Kamila C. de; Oliveira,Ulisses C. de; Farias,Maryzélia F. de.
ABSTRACT Soil compaction in agricultural areas has greatly increased in recent decades due to intensive farming practices, including short-cycle crops and machinery intensification. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of management systems on the physical quality of a dystrophic Yellow Oxisol, in the Cerrado region of Brazil. Treatments consisted of five soil management systems, with five replications (native forest [control], slash-and-burn agriculture, pasture, no-tillage, and conventional tillage). Data analysis was performed using a completely randomized experimental design. All systems were analyzed for soil density, macroporosity, microporosity, total porosity, hydraulic conductivity, infiltration, water retention curve, penetration resistance,...

NITROGEN FLUXES IN A NOTHOFAGUS OBLIQUA FOREST AND A PINUS RADIATA PLANTATION IN THE CENTRAL VALLEY OF SOUTHERN CHILE 73
Oyarzún,Carlos; Godoy,Roberto; Staelens,Jeroen; Aracena,Claudia; Proschle,Juan.
Forest structure and tree species can have a significant impact on total atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition; for example, deciduous forests have higher N requirements than coniferous forests. However, knowledge about the effect of the conversion of native Chilean vegetation cover by exotic plantations on N cycling is scarce. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the replacement of a Nothofagus obliqua native forest by a Pinus radiata plantation in southern Chile on the chemistry of throughfall, stemflow, soil water infiltration and percolation. Pinus radiata stemflow was more acidic (pH 4.7) than precipitation (pH 5.2) and throughfall (pH 5.6), while in the Nothofagus forest stemflow and throughfall pH were 6.3 and 6.1, respectively. In the...
