The aim of this paper was to analyze the relative importance of the steel industry to the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The 1990 and 1999 Brazilian input-output matrices and Brazil’s regional accounts - state of Espírito Santo were used to build input-output matrices (1990 and 1999) to this state. Increases in final demand were simulated to analyze the effects on the production of each sector as well as on employment creation in this state. Backward and forward linkage indexes were also computed to twelve sectors with the same purpose. The results show that the steel industry is very important to the capixaba economy especially due to the high multiplier effects in response to increases in final demand. The results show also that the relative importance... |

A modified version of a system dynamics model constructed for an EU-wide case-study project (TOPMARD) using STELLA software was used to simulate the effects of a number of development scenarios for a remote rural area in Northern Scotland, i.e. Caithness & Sutherland, which is characterised by multifunctional agriculture. In this paper, the context of the modelling work in policy and socioeconomic terms is first described. This is followed by the specification of the model and of the modelling scenarios, one of which relates to the “decommissioning” (run-down) of a major industrial site (Dounreay) within the area. The modelling results are discussed, in terms of regional population, land use, economic and other terms, from 2001 to 2015/2031. Finally,... |

A modified version of a system dynamics model constructed for an EU-wide case-study project (TOP-MARD) using STELLA software was used to simulate the effects of a number of development scenarios for a remote rural area in Northern Scotland, i.e. Caithness & Sutherland, which is characterised by a high regional importance of agriculture for the local economy. In this paper, the context of the modelling work in policy and socio-economic terms is first described. This is followed by the specification of the model and of the several modelling scenarios, which relate to the reconfiguration of Pillar 2 spending within the area and an reversal of recent Structural Funds spending for 2007 onwards. The modelling results are discussed, in terms of regional... |

This article looks for measuring and characterizing the milk’s agribusiness of Rio Grande do Sul economy. The methodology used indicators of sectorial performance and indexes of autonomy of purchases and sales to define the measure of the milk’s agribusiness. The data were extracted of the matrix input-output available by the Economy and Statistics Foundation (FEE) of the Rio Grande do Sul for the year 1998. It was verified that the state milk’s agribusiness answers, to basic price, for 6,77% of state’s agribusiness; it is strongly linked to the urban section in a direct way and it uses 118.603 workers, which employees 5,07% and 2,42% of the workers of the state’s agribusiness and state’s economy, respectively. Thus, it was concluded that the state milk’s... |

The article had as objective to evaluate the evolution of the productive structure and identify the key sectors of Parana in the years of 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995, highlighting the food processing sectors, using estimated input-output matrices. The results showed that the sectors of the transformation industry linked to the food processing sectors lost relative importance in the Parana economy, as much for the linkages with to the other sectors, as for the generation of production value and added value. This loss was more stressed in the more traditional food processing sectors, as Coffee Industry and Vegetal Products, instead of in most modern, as Meat Products, Dairy Products, Sugar Products and Vegetal Oil. Moreover, the production and the income had... |

Abstract: In the last three decades, the developing countries have sharply increased its contribution to global warming. From 2005 to 2012, Brazil has reduced its total emissions in 12% due to deforestation control. In the same period, the total GHG emissions excluding land-use change and forestry have increased 18% (WRI, 2014), while per capita GPD has raised 17%. The Brazilian climate policy must go beyond the deforestation control to avoid an unsustainable pattern of development. Since the mitigation effort bears heavily on primary activities, one must ask: how important are those sectors for Brazilian economy? And how their emissions are connected to other sectors along the productive chain? Specifically, this paper aims to calculate the GHG emissions... |
