Insectivores (Lipotyphla, Mammalia) from the Ramblian of the Daroca-Calamocha area Naturalis
Hoek Ostende, L.W. van den.
The insectivore assemblages from the Ramblian stratotype near Calamocha (Spain) are described, as well as those from San Roque 4A and 4B, two Ramblian localities near the Aragonian stratotype. Two new species are described, the erinaceid Galerix remmerti, and the shrew Clapasorex alvarezae. Both the percentages and the diversity of insectivores are higher in the Lower Ramblian, suggesting more humid conditions in zone Z than in zone A. This is in contradiction with the palaeoenvironmental reconstructions based on rodents.

Poduschka, Walter.
In a comparison of basic reproductive variables (number of teats, litter size, and duration of pregnancy) in the Madagascan Tenrecinae, some striking features (hyperthelia, litter size) are observed in Tenrec ecaudatus Lacépède, 1799 and the genus Hemicentetes Mivart, 1871. These variations are compared to Setifer setosus Froriep, 1806 and Echinops telfairi Martin, 1838. Tenrec ecaudatus gives birth to litters at intervals shorter than what was once believed to be the duration of pregnancy. This could be due either to superfetation, or to giving birth to one litter in two or more installments. The longitudinal stripe pattern of the genus Hemicentetes is interpreted as a mimicry of the sympatric, equally striped, juvenile Tenrec ecaudatus. The latter...

The nature of the fossil record of Neogene insectivores Naturalis
Hoek Ostende, L.W. van den; Reumer, J.W.F.; Doukas, C.S..
The Working-group on Insectivores from the Neogene of Eurasia (WINE) recently published an overview of the fossil record of insectivores from various European countries. The data thus gathered gives a good impression of the Neogene fossil record of this group. Although most localities are known from Spain, the Central European record has been studied in more detail. The lowermost and late Miocene are as yet relatively poorly documented, particularly in Central Europe. Throughout the Neogene the Central European record is geographically biased, most of our knowledge for a particular timeframe coming from one particular area. Overall the documentation of the fossil record appears to be adequate. Countries for which the fossil record has not been recorded in...

Insectivore faunas from the Lower Miocene of Anatolia - Part 8: Stratigraphy, palaeoecology, palaeobiogeography Naturalis
Hoek Ostende, L.W. van den.
This article deals with biostratigraphy, palaeoecology and biogeography of the Late Oligocene/Early Miocene insectivore faunas from Anatolia. With the exception of the much younger fauna from Keseköy, all faunas contain the same insectivore species. Keseköy contains the same genera, but mostly different species. It has been suggested that insectivores are of limited stratigraphical use due to the longevity of the taxa. This seems to hold true for the Early Miocene faunas from Anatolia. Changes in the composition of the insectivore faunas are used to infer environmental changes. A rise in the abundance of insectivores near the MP 30/MN 1 transition is believed to be indicative of a climatic amelioration. The dominance of Theratiskos in Harami and Keseköy...

Insectivore faunas from the Lower Miocene Anatolia. Part 1: Erinaceidae Naturalis
Hoek Ostende, L.W. van den.
Two new species of Galerix (Erinaceidae, Insectivora) are described from Lower Miocene localities of Anatolia. These species are G. saratji n. sp. from Kilçak 0, Kilçak 0", Kilçak 3A, Kilçak 3B, Harami 1 and Harami 3, and G. uenayae n. sp. from Keseköy. The recent literature on Galerix is reviewed and the phylogenetic relationships of the Early Miocene species of Galerix are elaborated. The presence of the erinaceid Neurogymnurus in Kilçak 3A indicates that the Kilçak localities are probably older than the Harami localities.

Insectivore faunas from the Lower Miocene Anatolia. Part 3: Dimylidae Naturalis
Hoek Ostende, L.W. van den.
A new genus of Dimylidae (Insectivora, Mammalia) is described from the Lower Miocene of Anatolia. This genus, Turkodimylus n.g. contains two species, Turkodimylus hartogi n.g. n.sp. from Kilçak 3A and Harami land Turkodimylus sondaari n.g. n.sp. from Keseköy. The literature on the Dimylidae is reviewed and a new classification is suggested.

Insectivore faunas from the Lower Miocene Anatolia. Part4: The genus Desmanodon (Talpidae) with the description of a new species from the Lower Miocene of Spain Naturalis
Hoek Ostende, L.W. van den.
A review is given of the literature on Desmanodon and Paratalpa. These two talpid genera can only be identified on the basis of the morphology of the humerus. Two species of Desmanodon, D. ziegleri n.sp. and D. burkarti n.sp., are described from the Lower Miocene of Anatolia. These species are considered ancestral to the Middle Miocene species of Anatolia. D. ziegleri is also a likely ancestor for the European species of Desmanodon. Desmanodon daamsi n. sp. is described from the Lower Miocene of Spain. The Desmanodon/Paratalpa finds from the Calatayud-Teruel basin (Spain) are discussed. The tribal classification of Desmanodon is problematic, since some species resemble Urotrichini, whereas other are morphologically closer to Scalopini. This suggests that...

Insectivore faunas from the Lower Miocene of Anatolia - Part 7: The Kargi assemblages Naturalis
Hoek Ostende, L.W. van den.
The insectivores of three assemblages from the Kargi K.Y.B. lignite mine are described. These assemblages are considered to be of Early Miocene age, intermediate between those from Inkonak and Kilçak. In Kargi 2 a shrew was found that was not yet known from Lower Miocene deposits in Anatolia. All other insectivores found were encountered in Inkonak and/or Kilçak also. Notable absentees are the talpids Theratiskos and Suleimania, a small shrew and the dimylid Turkodimylus. The two talpids and the shrew are probably Asian immigrants that appeared in Anatolia after the deposition of the Kargi lignite sequence. The absence of Turkodimylus is probably a result of the small sampling sizes.
