Although X-radiography has been widely used in studies of damage in composite materials, micro-tomography has received less attention, due to the high cost and limited availability of equipment. However, micro-tomographic analysis is a powerful tool, allowing 3D images of sections through sandwich materials to be obtained without specimen preparation. Four examples from a recent study are presented here, which show how micro-tomography can provide unique information on the quality of honeycomb sandwich structures, information on damage mechanisms and internal details of through thickness reinforcement in pinned foam cores. |

The main conclusions drawn from examinations made by an expert over the last twelve years on boats in the Bay of Arcachon, including both motor and sailing boats, are presented. The different types of damage most frequently observed in different areas of the boats are described, with distinctions made between superstructures, areas below the water-line and other components. The damage is defined, common repair methods are described and simple design modifications to avoid the problems are discussed. In conclusion, it is apparent that the problems related specifically to aging of the material are rare or very rare. With improved fabrication methods and mastery of the design process in-service experience fully justifies the position of composite materials as... |

One of the goals of inspection and traceability is to motivate suppliers to deliver safer food. The ability of these policies to motivate suppliers depends on the accuracy of the inspection, the cost of failing inspection, the cost of causing a foodborne illness, and the proportion of these costs paid by the supplier. We develop a model of the supplier's expected cost as a function of inspection accuracy, the cost of failure, and the proportion of the failure cost that is allocated to suppliers. The model is used to identify the conditions under which the supplier is motivated to deliver uncontaminated lots. Surprisingly, our results show that when safety failure costs can be allocated to suppliers, minimum levels of inspection error are required to... |

This survey was carried out in slaughter plants in the southern of the Espírito Santo State in order to study the causes and the percentages of liver condemnation during post mortem examination from 2008 to 2010. The main reasons for the condemnation of cattle livers in routine meat inspection of the State Inspection Service were fasciolosis (62.2%), telangiectatic (12.2%), bleeding (5.9%), abscess (5.2%), cysticercosis (4.0%), adherence (3.7%), infection (1.9%) and tuberculosis (1.1%). The hepatic fascioliasis was responsible for most of the lover condemnations, constituting a major challenge to livestock health in the south of the Espírito Santo. |

Sixty samples of chilled chicken carcasses submitted (30) and not submitted (30) to Brazilian inspection services were analyzed to investigate if inspected and non-inspected chilled carcasses represented different food safety risks in the region of Viçosa, MG, Brazil. The mean counts of indicator microorganisms (mesophilic aerobes, Enterobacteriaceae, total coliforms and Escherichia coli) of samples belonging to the inspected and non-inspected lots did not present significant differences (P>0.05). Also, no significant differences (P>0.05) were observed for the numbers of Salmonella spp. and E. coli (higher than 2log cfu g-1) between samples submitted or not to inspection. Statistical differences were observed between the two sample classes... |

ABSTRACT: Pigs transportation is a critical stage for their welfare and can directly influence the rates of carcass condemnation. The objective of this research was to study the injuries and condemnation data recorded in the Federal Inspection System (SIF) as potential welfare indicators during pig transport. In federally inspected slaughterhouses in the State of Paraná, Brazil, from january 2011 to December 2016, 1.4% (602,006) of carcasses were condemned, 15.0% (90,426) as a result of injuries related to transportation. From total condemnation cases, 12.1% (72,759) were due to traumatic injury, 2.5% (15,144) to PSE, 0.4% (2,327) to dead on arrival and 0.03% (196) to other transportation welfare indicators. There was no correlation between the... |
