The importance of integrons for development and propagation of resistance in Shigella: the case of Latin America BJM
Barrantes,Kenia; Achí,Rosario.
Abstract In Latin America, the disease burden of shigellosis is found to coexist with the rapid and rampant spread of resistance to commonly used antibiotics. The molecular basis of antibiotic resistance lies within genetic elements such as plasmids, transposons, integrons, genomic islands, etc., which are found in the bacterial genome. Integrons are known to acquire, exchange, and express genes within gene cassettes and it is hypothesized that they play a significant role in the transmission of multidrug resistance genes in several Gram-negative bacteria including Shigella. A few studies have described antibiotic resistance genes and integrons among multidrug resistant Shigella isolates found in Latin America. For example, in Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Costa...

Detection of integrons among multi-drug resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli strains isolated from clinical specimens in northern west of Iran BJM
Rezaee,Mohammad Ahangarzadeh; Sheikhalizadeh,Vajihe; Hasani,Alka.
Transference of resistance determinants by integrons is one of the important factors that can contribute to the increase in multi-resistant bacteria. We determined the prevalence and class of integrons among multi-drug resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli strains isolated from clinical specimens in Tabriz teaching hospitals. Firstly, susceptibility of 140 isolates to 13 antibiotics was determined using the disc diffusion method. Then, prevalence and class of integrons was detected in MDR strains by PCR-RFLP. One hundred five (75%) of total 140 isolates were uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). Other pathotypes included were: diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (13; 9.3%), sepsis-associated E. coli (5; 3.6%) and newborn meningitis-associated E. coli (2; 1.4%)....

Integron mediated multidrug resistance in extended spectrum beta-lactamase producing clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae BJM
Mobarak-Qamsari,Maryam; Ashayeri-Panah,Mitra; Eftekhar,Freshteh; Feizabadi,Mohammad Mehdi.
The present study describes integron mediated multiple antibiotic resistance in extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae. One hundred and four clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae from two Iranian hospitals were screened for extended-spectrum β-lactamase production and susceptibility of the extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing isolates was determined to 17 antibiotics by disc diffusion. Presence of integron classes 1, 2 and 3 was detected by PCR and integrase specific primers. Isolates harboring class 1 integron were then screened for variable regions using PCR. Fifty isolates (48%) produced extended-spectrum β-lactamases among which, 22 (44%) harbored class 1, 3 (6%) carried class 2 and none contained class 3...

Isolation of the first IMP-4 metallo-β-lactamase producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in Tianjin, China BJM
Li,Jing; Hu,Zhidong; Hu,Qiaojuan.
This study shows for the first time the mechanism of carbapenem resistance of a Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolate TJ8 recovered from Tianjin medical university general hospital ,China. The modified Hodge test and EDTA synergy test were performed for the screening of carbapenemases and metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs), respectively. Polymerase chain reactions and DNA sequencing confirmed that the strain carried IMP-4 metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) , SHV-11 and TEM-1 β-lactamase. ClassⅠintegron was positive and gave a 3.0-kb PCR amplicon .IMP-4 was located in ClassⅠintegron 5'CS. The gene determinants were organized in the order of blaIMP-4-orfII-orfIII.In all, the results show that IMP-4 MBL production caused the TJ8 resistance to carbapenems.

Detection and transfer of antimicrobial resistance gene integron in Salmonella Enteritidis derived from avian material Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Okamoto,AS; Andreatti Filho,RL; Rocha,TS; Menconi,A; Marietto-Gonçalves,GA.
The expansion of global poultry production has increased the need to reduce or control the agents responsible for economic losses, including Salmonella spp. These bacteria are also of public health concern due to their potential to cause food poisoning, and, more recently, due to the antimicrobial resistance presented by these bacteria. Molecular biology is an important tool currently used in the diagnosis and research studies of main poultry diseases. The present studied analyzed 100 samples of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) isolated from avian material aiming at detecting the class 1 integron gene, Integroninvolved in antimicrobial resistance, by means of polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and comparing it with plate inhibition test. Subsequently, SE samples...
