Zooplankton-climate linkages in different geographical regions IBSS Repository
Piontkovski, S. A.; Hameed, S..
The inter-annual variations of total zooplankton abundance in the Gulf of Maine (1961 ‑ 1991), the North‑East Atlantic (1961 ‑ 1994) and the North Sea (1961 ‑ 1994) were analyzed and related to the Icelandic Low and the Azores High atmospheric pressure systems. In a similar way the variations of zooplankton biomass in the Gulf of Alaska (1956 ‑ 1980) were related to the Aleutian Low pressure system. Cross‑correlation and spectral density functions were calculated for the zooplankton and the pressure indices. Regional and global aspects of the relationship between the intensity of the zooplankton fluctuations and the atmospheric centers of action were analyzed. A discussion on possible mechanisms that may contribute to the dynamic links transferring...

Seasonal and inter-annual ONSET Sea Surface Temperature variability along the northern coast of the Gulf of Guinea ArchiMer
Sohou, Z.; Koné, V.; Da-allada, Y.c.; Djakouré, S.; Bourlès, Bernard; Racape, Virginie; Degbe, G.; Adje, C..
The aim of this study is to characterize the coastal upwelling variability at seasonal and inter-annual time scales in the northern Gulf of Guinea (NGoG) using Sea Surface Temperature (SST) collected with autonomous “ONSET” thermometers. Results show that the ONSET SST data are suitable for numerical model evaluation, and provide relevant information in addition to satellite and reanalysis data at seasonal cycle. The minor and major coastal upwellings are present in all the products. The inter-annual SST variability is more pronounced in the western part of the region (Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana) than in the eastern part (Benin and Nigeria). The pattern differences between the west and the east of the region highlight a large spatial variability of the SST in...

Spawning distribution of North Sea plaice and whiting from 1980 to 2007 ArchiMer
Loots, Christophe; Vaz, Sandrine; Planque, Benjamin; Koubbi, Philippe.
The spatial distributions of spawning population of North Sea plaice and whiting were studied using geostatistical analyses. Variograms were computed each year since 1980 on abundance data of spawning adults using the first quarter data from the International Bottom Trawl Survey. Maps of spatial distribution of spawning adults were produced using kriging interpolation. For both species, distributions of spawning adults were in agreement with historical spawning grounds previously described from location of their eggs. This showed that spawning adults distribution may be used to infer the distribution of both plaice during its spawning peak and whiting at the beginning of its spawning period. Both species were strongly spatially structured with abundances...
