Promoting communication, participation, and learning with regard to organic food products: a communication theoretical approach Ecology and Society
Kastberg, Peter; Aarhus University, Business and Social Sciences, Business Communication; pk@asb.dk.
The market for organic foods is growing, however, the proportion of consumers buying organic foods is still considered low. Research shows that a significant barrier to consumers purchasing more organic foods is lack of information. This leads the relevant body of research to call for better communication around organic foods. The same body of research, however, neither questions what good communication surrounding organic foods is, nor what would make it better. Applying the communication theoretical formats of transmission, interaction, and coaction, respectively, onto instances of organic communication activities, I will discuss to what extent each format encourages consumer participation and learning. Transmission, typically in the form of monologuous...

Cultivating Communication: Participatory Approaches in Land Restoration in Iceland Ecology and Society
Berglund, Brita; Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Agricultural University of Iceland; brita@lbhi.is; Hallgren, Lars; Department of Urban and Rural Development, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences ; Lars.Hallgren@slu.se.
Stakeholder participation in environmental management is increasing. Staff of environmental agencies, however, often lack training in communication and in conducting participatory processes. Their interpretation of “participation” is of interest because interpretation affects how participation is practiced. We explored how participation was interpreted within the Soil Conservation Service of Iceland and how the interpretation affected how participation was carried out in two land restoration projects. Our methods included semi-structured interviews with agency staff and involved stakeholders, participant observations, and document review. The findings showed that participation was seen as a method to accomplish the agency’s...

Biophysical and sociocultural factors underlying spatial trade-offs of ecosystem services in semiarid watersheds Ecology and Society
Harrison, Paula A; Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford; Paula.Harrison@ouce.ox.ac.uk; Berry, Pam; Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford; pam.berry@eci.ox.ac.uk.
Biophysical and social systems are linked to form social-ecological systems whose sustainability depends on their capacity to absorb uncertainty and cope with disturbances. In this study, we explored the key biophysical and socio-cultural factors underlying ecosystem service supply in two semiarid watersheds of southern Spain. These included variables associated with the role that freshwater flows and biodiversity play in securing the system’s capacity to sustain essential ecosystem services and their relationship with social demand for services, local water governance, and land-use intensification. Our results reveal the importance of considering the invisible dimensions of water and biodiversity, i.e. green freshwater flows and trait-based...

Identification and characterization of MAGO and Y14 genes in Hevea brasiliensis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Yang,Zi-Ping; Li,Hui-Liang; Guo,Dong; Peng,Shi-Qing.
Abstract Mago nashi (MAGO) and Y14 proteins are highly conserved among eukaryotes. In this study, we identified two MAGO (designated as HbMAGO1 andHbMAGO2) and two Y14 (designated as HbY14aand HbY14b) genes in the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) genome annotation. Multiple amino acid sequence alignments predicted that HbMAGO and HbY14 proteins are structurally similar to homologous proteins from other species. Tissue-specific expression profiles showed that HbMAGO and HbY14 genes were expressed in at least one of the tissues (bark, flower, latex, leaf and root) examined. HbMAGOs and HbY14s were predominately located in the nucleus and were found to interact in yeast two-hybrid analysis (YTH) and bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) assays....

Lack of evidence for intermolecular epistatic interactions between adiponectin and resistin gene polymorphisms in Malaysian male subjects Genet. Mol. Biol.
Lau,Cia-Hin; Muniandy,Sekaran.
Epistasis (gene-gene interaction) is a ubiquitous component of the genetic architecture of complex traits such as susceptibility to common human diseases. Given the strong negative correlation between circulating adiponectin and resistin levels, the potential intermolecular epistatic interactions between ADIPOQ (SNP+45T > G, SNP+276G > T, SNP+639T > C and SNP+1212A > G) and RETN (SNP-420C > G and SNP+299G > A) gene polymorphisms in the genetic risk underlying type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and metabolic syndrome (MS) were assessed. The potential mutual influence of the ADIPOQ and RETN genes on their adipokine levels was also examined. The rare homozygous genotype (risk alleles) of SNP-420C > G at the RETN locus tended to be co-inherited...

Técnicas para interpretar a demanda da agricultura familiar: a comunicação interpessoal. Infoteca-e
SPERRY, S..
ABSTRACT: The objective here is to show the need to start the small farmers researches by collecting upon agriculturist social dynamics, as by understanding their social interaction among themselves and their society. It is possible to identify the needs and the problems of their organization and, therefore, to conduct a research process in order to transfer more suitable technologies to the reality. Instead of starding the technological interference in the rural area with the traditional diagnosis about the agriculturers production systems, the study call up attention to the importance of the qualified diagnosis and the interpessoal communication. In order to reach its purpose and also to show that strategy is acessable and that may be easily managed, the...

La réplication de l'ADN chez l'euryarchaea Pyrococcus Abyssi : mise en place et dynamique du complexe ArchiMer
Rouillon, Christophe.
DNA replication occurs through a large protein complex assembly called replisome. An understanding of its structure and function requires its in vitro reassembly from individual subunits. In all living organisms, the elongation of a primed DNA template by DNA polymerase, with high processivity, requires the accessory protein DNA sliding clamp (PCNA) that is loaded onto DNA by the clamp loader (RF-C). Generally, the archaeal proteins involved in DNA replication are more similar to those of the higher organisms (Eukarya) rather than to those from Bacteria. This study have focussed on the PCNA loading mechanism and on the DNA synthesis in the hyperthermophilic Euryarchaea Pyrococcus abyssi. To investigate the importance of some protein-protein and...

Screening and selection of growth-promoting bacteria for Dunaliella cultures ArchiMer
Le Chevanton, Myriam; Garnier, Matthieu; Bougaran, Gael; Schreiber, Nathalie; Lukomska, Ewa; Berard, Jean-baptiste; Fouilland, E.; Bernard, Olivier; Cadoret, Jean-paul.
Previous studies have demonstrated that bacteria influence microalgal metabolism, suggesting that the selection and characterization of growth-promoting bacteria should offer a new strategy for improving industrial algal cultivation. In the present study, 48 cultivable bacteria were isolated from marine microalgae species and identified using 16S rRNA phylogenetic analysis. The recovered bacteria were found to be members of the α- and γ-Proteobacteria, Cytophaga–Flavobacterium–Bacteroides (CFB) and gram-positive monophyletic clusters. To address the effect of these bacteria on the growth of Dunaliella sp. individually, an experimental high-throughput tool was developed to simultaneously compare replicated associations. A two-step approach was used to...

Compatibility Polymorphism Based on Long-Term Host-Parasite Relationships: Cross Talking Between Biomphalaria glabrata and the Trematode Schistosoma mansoni From Endemic Areas in Brazil ArchiMer
Lima, Mariana G.; Montresor, Lângia C.; Pontes, Joana; Augusto, Ronaldo De C.; Silva, Jairo Pinheiro Da; Thiengo, Silvana C..
Sympatric snail populations have been kept in the laboratory since the isolation of the parasite from the field. To evaluate the influence of the intermediate host in the infectivity of S. mansoni, this allopatric strain was compared to two sympatric strains, from different geographical origins, and with different time of maintenance in the laboratory. Snail–trematode compatibility was accessed for a total of nine possible combinations (three snail populations, three schistosome strains), using different charges of parasite: 1, 5, 10, and 15 miracidia/snail. Each S. mansoni strain was characterized according to its infectivity phenotype that reflects the efficiency of their infection mechanism and all B. glabrata populations were characterized according to...

Effect of bacterial interactions on the spoilage of cold-smoked salmon ArchiMer
Joffraud, Jean-jacques; Cardinal, Mireille; Cornet, Josiane; Chasles, Jean-sebastien; Leon, Sandrine; Gigout, Frederique; Leroi, Francoise.
Cold-smoked salmon is a lightly preserved fish product in which a mixed microbial flora develops during storage and where the interactive behaviour of micro-organisms may contribute to their growth and spoilage activity. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the bacterial interactions between the main species contaminating the cold-smoked salmon on bacterial growth, chemical and sensory changes, and spoilage. First, Carnobacterium piscicola, Photobacterium phosphoreum, Lactobacillus sakei, Vibrio sp., Brochothrix thermosphacta and Serratia liquefaciens-like were inoculated as pure cultures on sterile cold-smoked salmon. All bacterial species grew well; Vibrio sp. was the fastest and L. sakei strains developed very rapidly as well with a high...

Modulations of the interactions between pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas and Vibrio according to bacterial virulence and to genetic and physiological status of the host : Methodology and first results ArchiMer
De Decker, Sophie; Normand, Julien; Duperthuy, Marylise; Boudry, Pierre; Saulnier, Denis.
Rearing of Crassostrea gigas is the most economically important aquaculture activity in France. Bacteria belonging to Vibrio genus constitute one of the most abundant bacterial group in marine ecosystems. Two Vibrio species, V. splendidus and V. aestuarianus, were associated with many cases of mortality events in reared C. gigas spat and juvenile oysters, commonly during summer. This summer mortality syndrome has been extensively documented as the result of complex interactions between pathogens, host and environmental conditions. This work aims to study the Vibrio-host interactions and their modulations according to the virulence of pathogens and the genetic and/or physiological parameters of the host. These factors will be characterized by in vitro and...

After a reminder on the program SYSCOLAG (Coastal and Lagoons Systems), of the regulatory and legislative context in territorial economic planning on the coast, we describe the structure of the developed methodological tool. We clarify then the method according to its three main trunk roads: effects of the activities and uses on the economy of the territory, the effects of the activities and uses on the natural environment and the living environment, the evaluation of the interactions between activities and uses. We apply the method exposed in a frame demonstrator by taking the scenario of the lagoon and coastal territory of the Thau Basin (Hérault). Exposure to the Paralytic Shellfish Toxin Producer Alexandrium catenella Increases the Susceptibility of the Oyster Crassostrea gigas to Pathogenic Vibrios ArchiMer
Abi-khalil, Celina; Lopez-joven, Carmen; Abadie, Eric; Savar, Veronique; Amzil, Zouher; Laabir, Mohamed; Rolland, Jean-luc.
The multifactorial etiology of massive Crassostrea gigas summer mortalities results from complex interactions between oysters, opportunistic pathogens and environmental factors. In a field survey conducted in 2014 in the Mediterranean Thau Lagoon (France), we evidenced that the development of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella, which produces paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), was concomitant with the accumulation of PSTs in oyster flesh and the occurrence of C. gigas mortalities. In order to investigate the possible role of toxic algae in this complex disease, we experimentally infected C. gigas oyster juveniles with Vibrio tasmaniensis strain LGP32, a strain associated with oyster summer mortalities, after oysters were exposed to Alexandrium...

The western part of the Gulf of Cadiz: contour currents and turbidity currents interactions ArchiMer

Recent multibeam bathymetry and acoustic imagery data provide a new understanding of the morphology of the western part of the Gulf of Cadiz. The gulf is under the influence of a strong current, the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW). This current is at the origin of the construction of the giant Contourite Depositional System. Canyons and valleys with erosive flanks are observed. Only the Portimao Canyon is presently connected to the continental shelf. Channels occur on the continental shelf but are presently disconnected from the deeper network of channels and valleys. Slumps are localized in steep slope areas. They are caused by oversteepening and overloading, sometimes probably associated with earthquake activity. Slumps transform sharply into turbidity...
