The market for organic foods is growing, however, the proportion of consumers buying organic foods is still considered low. Research shows that a significant barrier to consumers purchasing more organic foods is lack of information. This leads the relevant body of research to call for better communication around organic foods. The same body of research, however, neither questions what good communication surrounding organic foods is, nor what would make it better. Applying the communication theoretical formats of transmission, interaction, and coaction, respectively, onto instances of organic communication activities, I will discuss to what extent each format encourages consumer participation and learning. Transmission, typically in the form of monologuous... |

Epistasis (gene-gene interaction) is a ubiquitous component of the genetic architecture of complex traits such as susceptibility to common human diseases. Given the strong negative correlation between circulating adiponectin and resistin levels, the potential intermolecular epistatic interactions between ADIPOQ (SNP+45T > G, SNP+276G > T, SNP+639T > C and SNP+1212A > G) and RETN (SNP-420C > G and SNP+299G > A) gene polymorphisms in the genetic risk underlying type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and metabolic syndrome (MS) were assessed. The potential mutual influence of the ADIPOQ and RETN genes on their adipokine levels was also examined. The rare homozygous genotype (risk alleles) of SNP-420C > G at the RETN locus tended to be co-inherited... |

ABSTRACT: A research project on farming community development has been carried out by Embrapa Cerrados (Savannah Agricultural Research Center of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) in three Agrarian Reform Settlement Projects (PA): PA Jibóia, PA Paraíso and PA Santa Clara Furadinho, in Unaí country, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. At its initial phase, there was a diagnose and survey of information about the interpersonal interaction among group members. The objective of this article is to discuss the applicability of Moreno Sociometry in mapping the interpersonal relations between the land reform settlers to subsidize development of farming communities. initially, farmers were interviewed and requested to respond to three questions related to... |

Previous studies have demonstrated that bacteria influence microalgal metabolism, suggesting that the selection and characterization of growth-promoting bacteria should offer a new strategy for improving industrial algal cultivation. In the present study, 48 cultivable bacteria were isolated from marine microalgae species and identified using 16S rRNA phylogenetic analysis. The recovered bacteria were found to be members of the α- and γ-Proteobacteria, Cytophaga–Flavobacterium–Bacteroides (CFB) and gram-positive monophyletic clusters. To address the effect of these bacteria on the growth of Dunaliella sp. individually, an experimental high-throughput tool was developed to simultaneously compare replicated associations. A two-step approach was used to... |

Sympatric snail populations have been kept in the laboratory since the isolation of the parasite from the field. To evaluate the influence of the intermediate host in the infectivity of S. mansoni, this allopatric strain was compared to two sympatric strains, from different geographical origins, and with different time of maintenance in the laboratory. Snail–trematode compatibility was accessed for a total of nine possible combinations (three snail populations, three schistosome strains), using different charges of parasite: 1, 5, 10, and 15 miracidia/snail. Each S. mansoni strain was characterized according to its infectivity phenotype that reflects the efficiency of their infection mechanism and all B. glabrata populations were characterized according to... |

Cold-smoked salmon is a lightly preserved fish product in which a mixed microbial flora develops during storage and where the interactive behaviour of micro-organisms may contribute to their growth and spoilage activity. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the bacterial interactions between the main species contaminating the cold-smoked salmon on bacterial growth, chemical and sensory changes, and spoilage. First, Carnobacterium piscicola, Photobacterium phosphoreum, Lactobacillus sakei, Vibrio sp., Brochothrix thermosphacta and Serratia liquefaciens-like were inoculated as pure cultures on sterile cold-smoked salmon. All bacterial species grew well; Vibrio sp. was the fastest and L. sakei strains developed very rapidly as well with a high... |

Rearing of Crassostrea gigas is the most economically important aquaculture activity in France. Bacteria belonging to Vibrio genus constitute one of the most abundant bacterial group in marine ecosystems. Two Vibrio species, V. splendidus and V. aestuarianus, were associated with many cases of mortality events in reared C. gigas spat and juvenile oysters, commonly during summer. This summer mortality syndrome has been extensively documented as the result of complex interactions between pathogens, host and environmental conditions. This work aims to study the Vibrio-host interactions and their modulations according to the virulence of pathogens and the genetic and/or physiological parameters of the host. These factors will be characterized by in vitro and... |

After a reminder on the program SYSCOLAG (Coastal and Lagoons Systems), of the regulatory and legislative context in territorial economic planning on the coast, we describe the structure of the developed methodological tool. We clarify then the method according to its three main trunk roads: effects of the activities and uses on the economy of the territory, the effects of the activities and uses on the natural environment and the living environment, the evaluation of the interactions between activities and uses. We apply the method exposed in a frame demonstrator by taking the scenario of the lagoon and coastal territory of the Thau Basin (Hérault). A set of appendices, including in particular evaluation grids are supplied with support for the... |

The multifactorial etiology of massive Crassostrea gigas summer mortalities results from complex interactions between oysters, opportunistic pathogens and environmental factors. In a field survey conducted in 2014 in the Mediterranean Thau Lagoon (France), we evidenced that the development of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella, which produces paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), was concomitant with the accumulation of PSTs in oyster flesh and the occurrence of C. gigas mortalities. In order to investigate the possible role of toxic algae in this complex disease, we experimentally infected C. gigas oyster juveniles with Vibrio tasmaniensis strain LGP32, a strain associated with oyster summer mortalities, after oysters were exposed to Alexandrium... |

Recent multibeam bathymetry and acoustic imagery data provide a new understanding of the morphology of the western part of the Gulf of Cadiz. The gulf is under the influence of a strong current, the Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW). This current is at the origin of the construction of the giant Contourite Depositional System. Canyons and valleys with erosive flanks are observed. Only the Portimao Canyon is presently connected to the continental shelf. Channels occur on the continental shelf but are presently disconnected from the deeper network of channels and valleys. Slumps are localized in steep slope areas. They are caused by oversteepening and overloading, sometimes probably associated with earthquake activity. Slumps transform sharply into turbidity... |
