Spontaneous inertia-gravity-wave generation by surface-intensified turbulence ArchiMer
Danioux, Eric; Vanneste, J.; Klein, Patrice; Sasaki, H..
The spontaneous generation of inertia-gravity waves (IGWs) by surface-intensified, nearly balanced motion is examined using a high-resolution simulation of the primitive equations in an idealized oceanic configuration. At large scale and mesoscale, the dynamics, which is driven by baroclinic instability near the surface, is balanced and qualitatively well described by the surface quasi-geostrophic model. This however predicts an increase of the Rossby number with decreasing spatial scales and, hence, a breakdown of balance at small scale; the generation of IGWs is a consequence of this breakdown. The wave field is analysed away from the surface, at depths where the associated vertical velocities are of the same order as those associated with the balanced...

A review of undulated sediment features on Mediterranean prodeltas: distinguishing sediment transport structures from sediment deformation ArchiMer
Urgeles, Roger; Cattaneo, Antonio; Puig, Pere; Liquete, Camino; De Mol, Ben; Amblas, David; Sultan, Nabil; Trincardi, Fabio.
Most Mediterranean prodeltas show undulated sediment features on the foresets of their Holocene wedges. These features have been described all along the Mediterranean for the last 30 years and interpreted as either soft sediment deformation and incipient landsliding, and more recently, as sediment transport structures. We perform a review and detailed analysis of these undulated sediment features using ultrahigh-resolution seismic and bathymetric data as well as geotechnical information and hydrodynamic time series and hydrographic transects. In this study we show that the characteristics of the sediment undulations (configuration of the reflections down section and between adjacent undulations and overall morphologic characteristics) are incompatible with...

Simulating vertical mixing in a shelf-break region: addition of a shear instability model, accounting for the overall effect of internal tides, on top of a one-dimensional turbulence closure mixed layer model ArchiMer
Druon, Jean-noel; Langlois, G; Le Fevre, J.
A simple parameterization of eddy diffusivity is used to simulate the shear mixing from tidally induced internal waves generated in the continental slope region southwest of Brittany. Near the edge of the shelf, the seasonal thermocline oscillates under the forcing of the barotropic tide which propagates over the shelf break. A composite model is constructed to simulate the mixing of the upper ocean from both external (wind stress) and internal (internal waves) sources. A simple one-dimensional eddy kinetic energy model, which predicts the temperature profile from heat flux and wind stress inputs, is validated with respect to regional hydroelimatic conditions, then coupled with a two-layer model of non-linear internal waves, to simulate the mixing...

Gyroscopic waves in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Van Haren, Hans; Millot, Claude.
In the ocean outside areas of dense-water formation, coherent vertical motions (w) are generally much weaker (similar to 10(-3)) than horizontal (u, v) ones. According to theoretical models based upon "the traditional approximation", i.e. where the horizontal component of the Coriolis force is neglected, describing inertio-gravity waves in the ocean interior, this holds especially for motions at the inertial frequency f: w(f) < O(10(-2)(u(f), v(f))). We present observations of significant w(f), with mean values of 10(-1)(u(f), v(f)) and occasional values of 1(u(f), v(f)), from the deep Western Mediterranean Sea characterized by very small buoyancy frequency N = 0 +/- 0.4f. Our observations also present evidence of vertical propagation of internal waves,...

Refroidissements locaux aux abords du talus continental Armoricain ArchiMer
Langlois, Gilbert; Gohin, Francis; Serpette, Alain.
Infrared measurement at the sea surface, which constitutes an operational technology in remote-sensing, has become essential for the study of ocean dynamics. Nevertheless, observations are only usable when clouds do not mask infrared radiation coming from the ocean, a condition which rarely pertains in the Bay of Biscay as a whole. lt is consequently a matter of primary concern to have at one's disposai an effective method which permits the computation of mean SST fields from a chronological succession of incomplete images. In the case under consideration, "kriging" is the most widely practised method of performing geostatistical estimates. Before mapping isotherms, temperatures are estimated by interpolation on a regular gridnet. The process was applied...

Internal tide cycle and topographic scattering over the North Mid‐Atlantic Ridge ArchiMer
Lahaye, Noe; Gula, Jonathan; Roullet, Guillaume.
Internal tides are a predominant source of high‐frequency variability and diapycnal mixing in the ocean. Understanding their dynamics and lifecycle is necessary to better understand their role in the ocean circulation. In this paper, we describe and quantify internal tide generation, propagation and dissipation in a sector of the North Mid‐Atlantic Ridge, using high‐resolution numerical simulations with realistic bathymetry and stratification. We show that the generation and dissipation of internal tides, as well as the distribution of internal tides amongst vertical modes, exhibit high spatial variability. We find that topographic scattering leads to a significant transfer of energy towards high vertical modes and thereby enhances internal tide...

Cold-water coral mounds in the southern Alboran Sea (western Mediterranean Sea): Internal waves as an important driver for mound formation since the last deglaciation ArchiMer
Wang, Haozhuang; Lo Iacono, Claudio; Wienberg, Claudia; Titschack, Jürgen; Hebbeln, Dierk.
Cold-water corals (CWCs) are widely distributed in the entire Alboran Sea (western Mediterranean Sea), but only along the Moroccan margin they have formed numerous coral mounds, which are constrained to the West and the East Melilla CWC mound provinces (WMCP and EMCP). While information already exists about the most recent development of the coral mounds in the EMCP, the temporal evolution of the mounds in the WMCP was unknown up to the present. In this study, we present for the first time CWC ages obtained from four sediment cores collected from different mounds of the WMCP, which allowed to decipher their development since the last deglaciation. Our results revealed two pronounced periods of coral mound formation. The average mound aggradation rates were...

Aspectos teóricos sobre ondas internas OceanDocs
Chiriguaya, J..
