Determinants of Argentina’s External Trade AgEcon
Catao, Luis; Falcetti, Elisabetta.
Following the liberalization reforms of the late 80s and early 90s, several emerging market economies have experienced large and persistent trade deficits. This paper focuses on the Argentine experience, examining the extent to which trade imbalances in the 1990s resulted from income and relative price movements, as well as from shifts in foreign trade elasticities associated with structural changes. New estimates of export and import equations are presented using a broader set of variables than previous studies and distinguishing between intra and extra MERCOSUR trade. We find that considerable export sensitivity to world commodity prices, domestic absorption, and economic activity in Brazil, combined with a high income elasticity of imports, are key...

A baromfi ágazat versenyképességének helyreállítása AgEcon
Nabradi, Andras; Szollosi, Laszlo.
A főbb problémakörökre...

Modellierung von Betriebsentwicklung und Nachhaltigkeitszielen AgEcon
Zeddies, Jurgen.
In his numerous textbooks WILHELM BRANDES has laid the foundation for theoretically appropriate modeling of farm firms, which has recently been expanded to modeling sustainability goals. The published research results belong to the fields of economic, ecological, and social sustainability. Standard method for the analysis of economic sustainability is the gross margin calculation, for the given purpose extended by associated opportunity costs and/or by appropriately adding further associable branch specific costs. At an on-farm-basis the system has been developed to a management information system under sustainability goals which has been further developed to the new forms of precision agriculture by incorporating yield and soil nutrient mapping,...

Selected Results of the IFCN Beef Network AgEcon
Deblitz, Claus.
The global players in beef production are North America, Brazil, Argentina, Australia and the EU-25. In value-terms, the main exporters are North America, Australia, Brazil and Argentina. Main importers are again North America, Japan and the Far East. Within the framework of the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN), and using harmonised methods for analysis, a total of 29 typical beef finishing farms in 15 important beef producing countries were analysed. The farms show significant differences in production systems and productivity levels. The highest cost of beef production is found in the EU-countries (US$ 350–500 per 100 kg carcass weight), the lowest in Argentina, Uruguay and Pakistan (US$ 100–130). In the case of trade liberalisation, farms...

IFCN Cash Crop: Benchmarking Farms Globally Oilseed Production Costs AgEcon
Plessmann, Frank; Ebmeyer, Christian; Goerg, Konrad.
Vegetable oil production has become one of the fastest expanding cash crop sectors in the last 50 years and it is still increasing rapidly. However the regions of expansion, the sources of plant oil and their importance vary over time. To shed light on this development it is necessary to look at the farm level production systems and their production costs for a variety of countries and oilseeds. In this paper we present the first results of the IFCN Cash Crop Network covering the international comparison of oilseed producing farms. A total of 25 farms with oilseed production have been analysed in compiling this paper. All farms produce at least one of the following oilseeds: soybeans, oilseed rape, sunflower and (two farms) mustard. The farms are located...

International Comparison of the Export Competitiveness of Chinese Honey AgEcon
Ma, Lunjiao.
Honey production and trade in the world are introduced. Total output of honey shows an increasing trend while the output of Chinese honey always ranks the first in the world. China, Argentina, Mexico are the major exporters of honey. In the year 2006, honey exports of China, Argentina and Mexico occupy 49.9% of the world's total export volume. International competitiveness of the three honey export countries are calculated, compared and analyzed by adopting the indices such as export price, international market share, and Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) index. Result shows that honey price of Mexico is significantly higher than the world’s average level, that of Argentine is close to the world’s average price, and that of China is a more stable price...

A Global Project for Comparative Farm Analysis: The International Farm Comparison Network IFCN AgEcon
Deblitz, Claus; Hemme, Torsten; Isermeyer, Folkhard; Plessmann, Frank.
Before IFCN was founded, existing farm-level data sets for international comparisons - if there were any - were not comparable. Differences from country to country regarding methodology applied, extent of data sets (physical and financial figures), and availability of up-to-date figures caused the incomparability. The IFCN is a world-wide association of agricultural scientists, advisors and farmers. Within the framework of this co-operation, farms and agricultural production systems are defined that are typical for their regions. Their economic situation is analysed, and the farms can be projected into the future. At present, the network, which is coordinated by the IFCN-centre in Braunschweig, Germany, operates for three branches: dairy (> 30...

Selected Results of the IFCN Dairy Network Milk Prices and Costs of Milk Production in 2003 AgEcon
Hemme, Torsten; Deeken, Eva.
Within the IFCN Dairy Network milk prices and costs of milk production have been analysed from 31 countries for the year 2003. A wide diversity of milk prices between the countries could be observed with > 35 US-$/100 kg milk in Switzerland, Norway and Canada and < 15 US-$ in Argentina and Pakistan. Costs of milk production differ significantly between the countries, and within the countries as well. The highest costs of milk production (50 - 60 US- $/100 kg milk) are found in Switzerland and on average sized farms in the EU, the lowest costs in Argentina (10 – 15 US-$). For the future, a "world market price for milk," which was around 15 - 20 US-$/100 kg milk in 2003, is expected to be higher and might end at around 28 US-$.
