Liothrips tractabilis sp.n. (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripinae) from Argentina, a potential biocontrol agent of Weedy Campuloclinium macrocephalum (Asteraceae) in South Africa Neotropical Entomology
Mound,Laurence A.; Pereyra,Veronica.
A new species, Liothrips tractabilis, is described from northern Argentina. Feeding by this thrips causes severe damage to the leaves of Campuloclinium macrocephalum, a plant that has been introduced to South Africa where it is a serious weed of grasslands. A key is provided to the four species of the genus Liothrips recorded from Argentina.

CHEMICAL OPTIONS FOR THE CONTROL OF SILVERLEAF NIGHTSHADE (Solanum elaeagnifolium) Planta Daninha
GITSOPOULOS,T.K.; DAMALAS,C.A.; GEORGOULAS,I..
ABSTRACT Silverleaf nightshade is a difficult-to-control perennial weed. Field experiments were conducted in northern Greece to evaluate the control of silverleaf nightshade with POST applications of glufosinate (1,500 g a.i. ha-1), glyphosate (3,600 g a.i. ha-1), tembotrione (148.5 g a.i. ha-1), and a mixture of tembotrione plus bentazon (148.5 plus 1,440 g a.i. ha-1) at an early vegetative stage (plant height 10-15 cm) and at the beginning of flowering (plant height 30-50 cm). Glufosinate provided > 95% control of silverleaf nightshade from 7 to 39 days after treatment (DAT), regardless of the vegetative stage at herbicide application. Similarly, glyphosate provided up to 90% control around 39 DAT at either growth stage applied, exhibiting gradually...

Modeling the Emergence and Growth of Alligatorweed at Different Field Capacity Levels Planta Daninha
AHMAD,T.; TANVEER,A.; NADEEM,M.A.; YASEEN,M..
ABSTRACT: A study focusing on different field capacity levels was planned in the Weed Science Lab, Department of Agronomy, University of Agriculture Faisalabad. Fresh alligatorweed was harvested from the Agronomy fields and cuttings (2 cm length) were made from it. These cuttings were placed at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% field capacity levels in pots for 25 days. The results of the experiments revealed that at all field capacity levels, fragments of alligatorweed were able to sprout and grow. Increased moisture levels significantly increased the emergence ability and survival of the alligatorweed plants upto a certain level. Compared with the control (25% FC), emergence time of the sprouts in the maximum moisture regime (100% of FC) decreased by 40% (12.94...

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AFFECTING SEED GERMINATION OF COMMON TEASEL (Dipsacus fullonum) Planta Daninha
DADDARIO,J.F.F.; BENTIVEGNA,D.J.; TUCAT,G.; FERNÁNDEZ,O.A..
ABSTRACT Common teasel is a widespread, invasive species that has been introduced in Buenos Aires province, Argentina, where it alters the species composition of protected areas and native grasslands. A better understanding of seed germination behavior is essential for predicting its invasion potential in new areas and would be useful for developing effective management strategies. This research, conducted under laboratory conditions, evaluated the influence of several environmental factors such as pH, constant temperature, osmotic stress, salt stress and dry storage, on germination and rate of germination of common teasel seed. Between-year variation in germination responses was also examined. Seed germination was not affected by different pH levels....

Suppression of Maize (Zea mays) Seedling Growth by Invasive Alligatorweed (Alternanthera philoxeroides) Residues Planta Daninha
NADEEM,M.; TANVEER,A.; KHALIQ,A.; MURTAZA,G..
ABSTRACT: To investigate the allelopathic influence of soil incorporated plant residues of alligatorweed on emergence and seedling growth of maize (Zea mays), an experiment was conducted under laboratory conditions in the 2014-15 period. The effect of soil amended with whole plant residues of alligatorweed at different concentrations (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5% on w/w basis) was compared with residue free soil (control). Emergence traits, such as emergence percentage, time to 50% emergence, mean emergence time and emergence index were negatively influenced by weed residue incorporation as compared with weed residue free soil. Alligatorweed residues also exerted a pronounced negative influence on root and shoot lengths, root and shoot dry weights and seedling vigor...

Turning waste into a resource: Study of the effect of containers made of giant reed weeds on the shelf life and quality of tomatoes and strawberries Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
García-Ortuño,Teresa; Carbonell-Barrachina,Angel A; Andreu-Rodríguez,Javier; Ferrández-García,María T; Calín-Sanchez,Angel; Ferrández-Villena,Manuel; Ferrández-García,Clara E.
Giant reed (Arundo donax L.) is currently one of the greatest invasive threats to Mediterranean-type river ecosystems worldwide and can be easily transformed into a cheap and sustainable material that can be used in the manufacturing of containers for the fruit and vegetable industry. Simple trays were prepared using giant reed, and their behavior was evaluated during storage oftomatoes and strawberries. The mechanical properties of the giant reed particleboards were assayed, and it was shown that they are suitable for industrial purposes. The quality of strawberries and tomatoes stored for 7 and 14 days, respectively, in plywood (control) and giant reed containers was comparable, with no significant differences found. The parameters analyzed included...
