In the Ionian Sea (Central Mediterranean Sea), several thick acoustically transparent layers are present including the Augias deposit. The Augias deposit is the most recent, thick layer covering the entire floor of the Ionian Abyssal Plain with an average thickness of 10–12 m and a maximum thickness of up to 24 m in the Sirte Abyssal Plain. This deposit has also been observed in several adjacent smaller basins in waters deeper than 3000 m. Its estimated volume is > 65 km3. There are multiple plausible hypotheses regarding its age and triggering event, which include the 1600 BC Santorini volcanic caldera collapse, the 365 AD Crete M 8.5 earthquake and other smaller earthquakes such as the 374 AD Calabria M 6.3 earthquake and the 361 AD Sicily M 6.6... |

In the Ionian Sea, the subduction of the Nubia plate underneath the Eurasia plate leads to an important sediment remobilization on the Calabrian Arc and the Mediterranean Ridge. These events are often associated with earthquakes and tsunamis. In this study, we analyze gravity-driven deposits in order to establish their recurrence time on the Calabrian Arc and the western Mediterranean Ridge. Four gravity cores collected on ridges and slope basins of accretionary prisms record turbidites, megaturbidites, slumping and micro-faults over the last 330,000 years. These turbidites were dated by correlation with a hemipelagic core with a multi-proxy approach: radiometric dating, 18O, b* colour curve, sapropels and tephrochronology. The origin of the gravity-driven... |

The Middle Pleistocene Transition (1.2-0.7 Ma) is the most recent re-organization of the global climate system which includes variations in the frequency and amplitude of glacial/interglacial cycles, increased ice sheet volume, sea surface temperature cooling and a significant drop in the CO2 atmospheric levels. Here we present high-resolution planktonic foraminifera data (mean sampling resolution of about 780 years) from core LC10 recovered in the Ionian Sea (eastern Mediterranean), between 1.2 and 0.9 Ma. Selected taxa, among them G. ruber, T. quinqueloba and G. bulloides, show significant periodicities that can be associated to orbital cycles, mainly precession and obliquity. The planktonic foraminifera based paleoclimatic curve exhibits a cooling... |

It has recently been shown that two deep-water red shrimp species (Aristeus antennatus and Aristaeomorpha foliacea) have the potential to support a viable fishery in the Greek Ionian Sea (eastern Mediterranean). In this article, we investigate (i) the evolution that this newly developed trawl shrimp fishery may undergo when subjected to different management measures, and (ii) the most suitable extraction rates considering the uncertainties about the resource. We further analyse the effects that potential future fuel price increases and changes in the market may have on the fishery. Forecasting the biological and economic consequences of management actions, as well as the effects of market changes on inputs and outputs before they are applied, may help... |

In this work the description of the interaction between the general circulation and the nitrogen cycle in the Ionian Sea is considered. Firstly, an analysis is made of nitrate data collected during POEM-BC cruises in October 1991 and April 1992; then a numerical experiment based on a coupled hydrodynamic ecomodel is presented. The model results relative to the periods corresponding to the cruises are discussed. The ecomodel is climatological and represents an aggregated description of the nitrogen cycle in terms of inorganic nitrogen, phytoplankton and detritus. The numerical results as nitrogen distributions, fluxes and primary production are presented. A strong dependence of nitrogen distribution on circulation emerges both from the observational data... |

The macrobenthic faunal composition, sedimentology and physical characteristics were investigated in an open coastal area of the Greek Ionian Sea. Hydrographic parameters were recorded at 26 stations using a CTD profiler during nine cruises performed between 1990 and 1991, while benthic samples were collected in November 1990 and April 1991 at 22 stations with the aid of a Ponar grab. Macrobenthic variety indicated an area of high scientific interest : 351 species in all, 18 of which are new to the Creek fauna. Furthermore, 10 species are previously unrecorded in the Eastern Mediterranean. Of the biological indices estimated, species richness was comparable to that of other open Greek areas, while population density seemed to be a function of a) depth and... |
