Detection of Type 1 Ostreid Herpes variant (OsHV-1 mu var) with no associated mortality in French-origin Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas farmed in Italy ArchiMer
Dundon, William G.; Arzul, Isabelle; Omnes, Emmanuelle; Robert, Maeva; Magnabosco, Cristian; Zambon, Michela; Gennari, Lorenzo; Toffan, Anna; Terregino, Calogero; Capua, Ilaria; Arcangeli, Giuseppe.
In April 2010, the sampling of juvenile Pacific cupped oysters originating from France was undertaken from a farm located off the coast of the Marche region in Italy. Samples were sent to the national reference laboratory for mollusc diseases for bacteriological, histological, electron microscopical and molecular analysis. Classical and Real-Time PCR indicated the presence of the microvariant (OsHV-1 mu var) of Type 1 Ostreid Herpes virus (OsHV-1) despite the absence of clinical and pathological signs normally associated with the presence of this variant. Further molecular and sequencing analysis revealed the presence of OsHV-1 par and OsHV-1 DNA in one oyster indicating that simultaneous detection of both viruses is possible. This is the first report of...

Diversifying fishing effort in Sicilian fisheries: the case of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) ArchiMer
Cannizzaro, L; Bono, G; Rizzo, P; Potoshi, A; Celesti, A.
In the Sicilian fisheries, the swordfish (Xiphias gladius, Linnaeus 1758), caught from March to December with several gears which vary according to season, represents one of the most important economic resources. The size composition changes depending on the gear used, the way it is operated, the fishing area and season. The gears used for swordfish fishing (long-lines "for swordfish", drift-nets, harpoons as operated by typical boats named "feluche") mainly catch adult specimens. From August to December, a high number of very young swordfish specimens (1.5 to 4.5 kg) is also caught as by-catch during the albacore (Thunnus alalunga, Bonnaterre 1788) fishing which is carried out by a special long line and hooks only 3 cm long. It was observed that in the...

Euscorpius (Scorpiones, Euscorpiidae): three cases of stings in northwestern Italy J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Dutto,M; Dutto,L; Scaglione,N; Bertero,M.
In the period between June 2008 and August 2009, three cases of stings of Euscorpius scorpions indigenous to Italy were treated at two different emergency departments (ED) in hospitals of the Piedmont region, northwest Italy: Santa Croce e Carle General Hospital in Cuneo, and Santissima Annunziata Hospital in Savigliano. Scorpion stings in Italy are rare and not well documented in the literature; this situation may raise doubts among medical personnel as to how such lesions are best treated. Analysis of the incidents confirms that the venom of Euscorpius do not provokes systemic poisoning in humans and in these cases even dermatological reactions were not significant.

Documented bites by a yellow sac spider (Cheiracanthium punctorium) in Italy: a case report J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Papini,R.
In Italy reports of human envenomations by yellow sac spiders have been sporadic. Since increasing clinical information would improve understanding of the danger of yellow sac spiders to humans, we report the case of a 7-year-old child and her father bitten by a documented Cheiracanthium punctorium. They developed acute persistent pain with local skin signs and numbness, and required emergency treatment. The father recovered completely within 1 to 2 hours and the child within 3 to 4 days after treatment, probably as a result of spontaneous evolution. Clinicians should be aware of the risks and immediate management of spider bites.

A case of stings in humans caused bySclerodermus sp. in Italy J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Papini,Roberto Amerigo.
In the last years, stings of Sclerodermus species in humans have been sporadically reported in Italy. In order to draw attention to these bethylid wasps of medical importance, we report the case of documentedSclerodermus sp. stings on the dorsum, abdomen, arms, and thighs of a 40-year-old man and his wife. The sting sites developed raised red itchy rash. The source of environmental contamination was identified in a worm-eaten sofa purchased from a used furniture dealer and placed in the living room about a month and half earlier. The lesions on the man and his wife rapidly healed within 3 to 4 days once they left the house and treatment for the lesions was instituted. Physicians, dermatologists, medical and public health entomologists, as well as specific...

Justitia Holthuis, 1946 (Crustacea, Decapoda, Palinuridea) from the Middle Eocene of Verona and Vicenza (northern Italy) Naturalis
Garassino, Alessandro; Angeli, Antonio De.
Recently, Beschin et al. (2001) have described two specimens of palinurids, discovered at Chiampo (“Albanello” quarry, Vicenza, northern Italy). Preserved three dimensionally, these were collected from limestones of Lutetian (middle Eocene) age. The peculiar ornament of the dorsal carapace surface, consisting of imbricate scales in the cephalic region and parallel grooves in the branchial and cardiac regions, has allowed these to be ascribed to Justitia Holthuis, 1946, as a new species (J. vicetina Beschin et al., 2001), in the infraorder Palinuridea Latreille, 1802. This represents the first fossil record of this genus.

Taxonomy and distribution of the Trifurcula (Glaucolepis) raikhonae group (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae) Naturalis
Nieukerken, E.J. van; Purplesis, R..
Trifurcula (Glaucolepis) melanoptera sp. n. is described from southern Europe, where it is widespread. It is closely related to the Central Asian T. (Glaucolepis) raikhonae Puplesis, which is redescribed. Together they form the raikhonae species group. Sinopticula Yang is here synonymized with Glaucolepis Braun, its only species S. sinica Yang is tentatively regarded as closely related, if not conspecific with T. raikhonae. The distribution is mapped. On the basis of recent Chinese findings the larvae are assumed to be gall-makers on Prunus branches. Some phylogenetic and biogeographic remarks are given.

Galatheids, chirostylids and porcellanids (Crustacea, Decapoda, Anomura) from the Eocene and Oligocene of Vicenza (northern Italy) Naturalis
Angeli, Antonio De; Garassino, Alessandro.
At Monte Magrè a series of calcarenites of Ypresian and Lutetian age is exposed. The anomuran faunas were collected from the lower strata in this succession, along the road from Monte MagrË to Monte di Malo. These levels, indurated and white in color, contain nummulitid foraminifera, nodules and fragments of coralligenous algae, and moulds of corals, molluscs and other decapod crustaceans (e.g. Cyamocarcinus angustifrons Bittner, 1883).

Decapod crustaceans from the Oligocene of the Ligure Piemontese Basin, northern Italy Naturalis
Angeli, Antonio De; Marangon, Sergio.
Lithologically, the decapod-bearing levels of Rupelian (Oligocene) age in the Ligure Piemontese Basin, are characterized by an alternation of greyish blue marls with nodular elements and silt-rich, occasionally sandy, marls. The fossil studied for the present note have been collected mainly from pebbles or nodules which were eroded out of the higher levels exposed of this sedimentary complex, referred to as the ‘Formazione di Molare’. These levels overli the ‘Formazioni continentali delle Brecce di Costa Cravara e Pianfolco’, studied by Charrier et al. (1964) and dated as Early Rupelian. The levels yielding brachyuran fossils were attributed by Allasinaz (1987) to the transition between the ‘Formazione di Molare’ and the overlying ‘Marne di Rigoroso’, and...

Organic food and farming research in Italy: a review by Italian Ministry of agriculture and forestry policies(MIPAF) Organic Eprints
Puliga, S.; Marzetti, A.M.S.; Canali, S.; Zecca, F..
In Italy, as in other countries, Organic Food and Farming (OFF) research suffers of a very high fragmentation being carried out by many public research institutes, Universities and private centres. In more recent years, due to the increasing relevance of OFF within national rural development programmes strong efforts have been addressed towards an improvement of the efficiency of the fundings distribution, the research system and its activity reorganization, and a reduction of overlapping initiatives. A view on projects and institutions currently working on OFF research in Italy is presented, mainly focusing on the available public financial instruments and the main projects funded by MIPAF. Most of the Italian research projects investigates plant...

Measuring the risk of non-compliance in Italian organic farms with parametric and non parametric models Organic Eprints
Gambelli, Danilo; Solfanelli, Francesco; Zanoli, Raffaele.
Certification is an essential feature for organic products, and is based on controls/inspections to verify compliance with EU Reg. CE 834/07. Implementing a risk based inspection system can contribute to an effective and efficient organic control system, hence improving organic farming relative competitiveness. This study is part of the CERCOST EU project, and analyses data from inspections on a sample of Italian organic farms, aiming at the identification of management and structural risk factors contributing to the occurrence of non-compliances. Risk analysis is based on the estimation of both parametric and non-parametric models using negative binomial panel estimators and Bayesian network modelling.

Organic farming in Italy Organic Eprints
Santucci, Fabio Maria; Pignataro, Filippo.
History and situation of OF in Italy: The recent growth of organic sector in Italy can be considered a success story that deserves to be properly known and analysed. It is the result of several circumstances: the numerous food scandals which have afflicted Europe, the search for technical and economic alternatives by farmers, who have not yet decided to give up, the abundant flow of subsidies (direct and indirect ) which have been channelled into the entire organic food chain. Nevertheless, it also represents the outcome of the first steps made by few pioneers who since the early ‘50s had started to criticize the path into which the so called technological progress and the agricultural policies were leading Italian and European farming. These pioneers...

Cost and energy evaluation of organic cauliflower in sole crop and living mulch systems Organic Eprints
Ortolani, Livia; Kristensen, Hanne L.; Campanelli, Gabriele; Bavec, Martina; Bavec, Franc; von Fragstein, Peter; Bergmam, Astrid; Leteo, Fabrizio; Canali, Stefano.
This paper presents the findings of an assessment aimed to evaluate, in terms of cost and energy consumption, the introduction of living mulches in different organic vegetable systems producing cauliflower. The study was carried out in three European countries (IT, SLO and DK) in the frame of the InterVeg project (Core Organic II). The achievements demonstrated that, in economic terms, farmers’ choice of a specific technique, like living mulch instead of sole cropping, can be influenced by two key elements: human labor and fossil fuel consumption. Different organic systems have a different proportion in using the two inputs depending on the specific farm strategy.

Report on Italian Research in Organic Food and Farming (2000–2005) Organic Eprints
Puliga, Serenella; Marzetti, Annamaria; Canali, Stefano.
In Italy since the eighties, the scientific community opened a discussion on how to face many agricultural critical points, reconsidering old but renewed approaches to make agriculture more environment and consumer-friendly. In 1988 the first coordinated project on OF&F (Biological and integrated control of crop and forest pest and disease) was financed by MIPAF, involving 46 researchunits (research centres and universities). But it was only in the last decade that interest in organic farming really took off, when production methods continued to develop, along with consumers’ keen concern to be supplied with more wholesome, environment-friendly products. There was a major increase in the number of producers, and new initiatives got on the way for...

New figures released by Demeter-International reveal the steady global growth of biodynamic agriculture. Certified biodynamic hectares are up 2% (from 144,497 to 147,495 hectares), biodynamic processors are up 5% (from 456 to 478), and biodynamic distributors are up 3% (from 185 to 190). The number of countries with Demeter-International certified biodynamic activity increased from 48 to 52. Croatia and Peru enter the list with newly reported biodynamic farms, and Bulgaria and Ukraine enter the list with new biodynamic distributors. There is considerable volatility in the statistics, with most countries reporting changes in the statistics for 2012 compared to the previous year. The three leading countries, based on biodynamic hectares, are Germany (with...
