Globalization and Poverty in Senegal: A Worst Case Scenario? AgEcon
Maertens, Miet; Colen, Liesbeth; Swinnen, Johan F.M..
There is no consensus about how globalization –trade and foreign investments – affects poverty reduction. Using household survey data, this study contributes to the empirical literature on globalization and poverty by analyzing the household-level implications of increased foreign investments and trade in the horticulture sector in Senegal. In many aspects this represents what many would consider a “worst-case scenario”. Stringent rich country standards are imposed on exports and the supply chain is controlled by a single multinational company with extreme levels of supply base consolidation, full vertical integration and complete exclusion of smallholder suppliers. We analyze and quantify income and poverty effects under these “worst-case conditions” and...

The Effect of Continuing Education Participation on Agricultural Worker Outcomes AgEcon
Pena, Anita Alves.
Migrant farmworkers are among the poorest members of the working class served by the U.S. public workforce investment system. The National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP) provides job training and employment assistance to migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their dependents. While stated goals include assisting migrant farmworkers increase “economic stability” by steadying agricultural employment and developing job skills, little empirical evidence exists as to the effectiveness of these programs. This study investigates the effects of continuing education participation on wages, time worked in agriculture, and poverty in this population. Data come from the U.S. Department of Labor’s National Agricultural Workers Survey (NAWS), a nationally and regionally...

A Profile of the Limpopo Province: Demographics, Poverty, Income, Inequality and Unemployment from 2000 till 2007 AgEcon
Jacobs, Elne; Punt, Cecilia; Ramathoka, Mabu; Masekoameng, Abel.
The Limpopo agricultural sector is a dynamic and livelihood sustainable sector. Approximately 2.7% of the Limpopo value added gross domestic product comes through agriculture and 1.1% of the population in Limpopo is working in this sector. There is thus a need for macro-economic research in order to investigate potential and current challenges and opportunities. This paper examines several of these challenges namely demographic compositions, unemployment, income distribution, poverty and inequality. It will provide results from the Labour Force Surveys from 2000 until 2007 with a more in-depth look into 2007. Population and labour force statistics provide the foundation for further analysis. This paper indicates that unemployment is being dominated by the...

Rational Expectation and Education Rewarding: The Case of Chinese Off-Farm Wage Employment AgEcon
Hou, Linke; Wang, Xiaobing; Yu, Xiaohua.
This study establishes a life-cycle model that a representative agent chooses optimal time of education to maximize his/her life earning, which implies that there may exist nonlinear relation between education and earning. Using the data of Chinese off-farm wage employment, we find that the duration of schooling years will increase by 1.7 years with 1 percent increase in rate of return to education. The empirical results also indicate that controversies about return to education might arise from model misspecification without consideration of nonlinearity and sample selection.

Which Italian Family Farms Will Have a Successor? AgEcon
Corsi, Alessandro.
The succession in family farm is a critical issue: it not only involves the transmission of wealth, but also of specific skills and of specific farm management techniques. Since a large share of farmers in Italy are old, the lack of prospective successors in their farms would imply that a change in the farm management will take place. In some cases this might lead to the abandonment of farms and to degradation of the territory. It is therefore important to explore the conditions under which a farm household can transmit the farm management within the household itself. In our paper we try to assess which are the determinants of the likely farm succession within the family and we test in a developed country the hypothesis put forward by Rosenzweig and Wolpin...

Why Family Farms Are Increasingly Using Wage Labour? AgEcon
Blanc, Michel; Cahuzac, Eric; Elyakime, B.; Tahar, Gabriel.
In many developed countries, the share of wage employment out of the total agricultural labour force has been increasing for the last ten years. Using data from French agricultural censuses, we present an analysis of the factors that influence households' decisions about whether to work on the family farm or to work outside, and about the use of wage labour. Studying how the effects of these factors have varied between 1988 and 2000 enables us to highlight the different mechanisms that have led to an increase in permanent wage employment during that period. In particular, we show that family labour and permanent wage labour have become nearly equivalent in 2000, whereas that was not the case in 1988.

Labor Market Participation of Chinese Agricultural Households AgEcon
Glauben, Thomas; Herzfeld, Thomas; Wang, Xiaobing.
This work is devoted to the analysis of the different labor market participation regimes of Chinese farm households. Using household data over the period 1986-2000 from the province Zhejiang, we apply a multinomial logit model to empirically examine household, farm, and regional characteristics affecting the probability that farmers employ one of four alternative labor market regimes. Results suggest that labor market decisions are significantly related to several personal, farm, and village attitudes. In addition, we find the more market oriented policy reforms at the end of the 1980s stipulated that households participate in labor markets while the more anti-market reforms during the 1990s led to the opposite and encouraged autarky.

Supervision and Transaction Costs: Evidence from Rice Farms in Bicol, The Philippines AgEcon
Evenson, Robert E.; Kimhi, Ayal; Desilva, Sanjaya.
Labor markets in all economies are subject to transaction costs associated with recruiting, monitoring and supervising workers. Rural labor markets in developing economies, where institutions such as labor and contract law and formal employment assistance mechanisms are not in place, are regarded to be particularly sensitive to transaction cost conditions. The inherent difficulty of measuring transaction costs has limited studies on this topic. In this paper, we analyze supervision activities reported in a cross-section survey of rice farmers in the Bicol region of the Philippines. This survey is unique because it provides supervision data at the farm task level. We present a simple optimization model in which supervision intensity increases the...

Interlinked Transactions in Cash Cropping Economies: The Determinants of Farmer Participation and Performance in the Zambezi River Valley of Mozambique AgEcon
Benfica, Rui M.S.; Tschirley, David L.; Boughton, Duncan.
This paper investigates the determinants of participation and performance of tobacco contract farmers, and the effects of participation on overall crop and household incomes in the Zambezi Valley of Mozambique. We test the existence of threshold effects in land holdings and educational attainment to identify the types of farmers that benefit. Several results stand out. First, participation in the schemes is driven by factor endowments, asset ownership and alternative income opportunities, and very little by demographic factors. Second, we find no returns to education in tobacco; this result is consistent with previous research in Mozambique but surprising in an agronomically demanding crop like tobacco. Third, there appear to be economies of scale in...

Labor Supply, Schooling and the Returns to Healthcare in Tanzania AgEcon
Adhvaryu, Achyuta; Nyshadham, Anant.
We estimate the effects of higher quality healthcare usage on health, labor supply and schooling outcomes for sick individuals in Tanzania. Using exogenous variation in the cost of formal sector healthcare to predict treatment choice, we show that using better quality care improves health outcomes and changes the allocation of time amongst productive activities. In particular, sick adults who receive better quality care reallocate time from non-farm to farm labor, leaving total labor hours unchanged. Among sick children, school attendance significantly increases as a result of receiving higher quality healthcare, but labor allocations are unaffected. We interpret these results as evidence that healthcare has heterogeneous effects on marginal productivity...

Labour Scarcity – Its Immensity and Impact on Agriculture AgEcon
Prabakar, C.; Devi, K. Sita; Selvam, S..
The labour scarcity being felt as a major impediment in agriculture, this study has probed into its magnitude, impacts, causes and possible solutions in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. The study has revealed that prevalence of acute labour scarcity in the district has affected the productivity levels of almost all crops and is even leading towards the permanent changes in the cropping pattern. The important reasons identified for the labour scarcity include higher wages in other locally-available jobs, seasonal nature of agricultural jobs and presumption of an agricultural job to be of low esteem. The level of adoption of labour-saving implements and technologies by the farmers is very low for the reasons of higher cost, lack of skill and smaller...

Pluriactivity Decisions by Farm Households in Italy AgEcon
Salvioni, Cristina; Sciulli, Dario; Parodi, Giuliana.
In this article we test whether in Italy the off-farm participation decisions of household members in working age are taken jointly and what are the variables that affect them. We find that the decisions of the operator, the spouse and the eldest child are not joint. Conversely, the participation decision of the operator and the spouse, that is of the two household's members belonging to the same generation, are found to be joint. The results suggest that policy actions for the purpose of encouraging off-farm participation rely on measures geared at improving the level of education and providing childcare services.

The Effect of Farm Labor Organization on IPM Adoption: Empirical Evidence from Thailand AgEcon
Beckmann, Volker; Irawan, Evi; Wesseler, Justus.
This paper examines the empirical evidence of a theoretical economic model of the effect of labor organization on IPM adoption developed by Beckmann and Wes seler (2003). We use cross section data collected from the participatory farming system survey of 150 durian growers in Chanthaburi, Thailand, on March – April 2005. In contrast to many studies of IPM adoption, this work uses the form of farm labor organiza tion as endogenous factor for identifying the rate of IPM adoption of durian growers. Instrumental variables method was employed to relate econometrically a set of suspected variables as instruments of labor organization to the rate of IPM adoption of duri an growers. Results show that, among others, farms employing hired labor have a lower adoption...

LOCAL PARTNERSHIP AS AN INCUBATOR FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT: THE CASE OF DEBRZNO, NORTH-WESTERN POLAND AgEcon
Gramzow, Andreas.
Since the beginning of the 1990s, the gap in economic development between rural and urban regions in Poland has continuously grown. Increasing income disparities and the lack of job opportunities have already led to an outflow of young people out of and an increasing obsolescence in rural areas. As successful examples in different Polish regions show, endogenous initiatives may have a lasting impact on the economic development of rural areas and are able to counter the mentioned effects. This paper presents the results of a case study which analyses endogenous initiatives in the commune Dêbrzno, Pomorskie voivodship, Poland. The case study results primarily rely on open interviews conducted with inhabitants, representatives of the local government, and...

CAP effects on labour use in agriculture: Evidence from alternative dynamic panel data models AgEcon
Petrick, Martin; Zier, Patrick.
Our aim is to investigate whether the direct payments and rural development measures of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) do make jobs in agriculture safer. We work with a dynamic labour demand equation that is augmented by the full set of policy instruments of the CAP. It is estimated on a unique regional panel dataset of three East German states for the period 1999-2006. We present results for three consistent estimators which differ in how they eliminate the fixed effects and how they instrument the lagged dependent variable, including estimators due to Arellano and Bond, Blundell and Bond, and a corrected least-squares dummy variable estimator due to Kiviet and Bruno. Our results suggest that there were few desirable effects on job maintenance...

Labor Cost and Value of Citrus Operations with Alternative Technology: Enterprise DCF Approach AgEcon
Iwai, Nobuyuki; Emerson, Robert D.; Roka, Fritz M..
The prospect of immigration policy reform has renewed growers’ concerns of serious labor shortages and cost increases given that a large portion of the workforce is unauthorized for U.S. employment. This concern of labor shortages and cost increases is more serious for specialty crop agriculture which is highly labor intensive. Specialty crop growers may address the problem in various ways, but likely options include adoption of mechanical harvesting. In the current paper we study the citrus industry case and estimate the value for two operational modes (hand and mechanical harvesting) using the enterprise discounted cash flow (DCF) approach. Further we implement a simulation to forecast how the value for each operational mode would change with a change in...

Are Organic Farmers Really Better Off Than Conventional Farmers? AgEcon
Hiroki, Uematsu; Mishra, Ashok K..
We employed the propensity score matching and estimated the causal effect of being certified organic crop producers on farm household income and its various components in the United States. Contrary to the standard assumption in economic analysis, certified organic farmers do not earn significantly higher household income than conventional farmers. Certified organic crop producers earn higher revenue but they incur higher production expenses. In particular, certified organic producers spend significantly more on labor expenses, insurance payments, and marketing charges than conventional farmers. The results suggest that early adopters of organic farmers have done so for non pecuniary reasons and the lack of economic incentives can be an important barrier...
