Partial Reform of World Rice Trade: Implications for the U.S. Rice Sector AgEcon
Haley, Stephen L..
This paper analyzes the consequences for the United States of a partial reform of world rice trade. It is argued that likely trade reform would occur in the japonica rice producing countries of Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the European Community. Multilateral rice trade liberalization would have strong effects for medium grain rice in the United States. The strength of these effects might not be felt for a couple of years after the liberalization has begun because of minimal Japanese imports in the first couple of years of liberalization. U.S. rice millers will likely benefit more than producers. California producers would be the major beneficiaries of more open world rice markets.

Effects of the WTO and Free Trade Agreements on Japonica Rice Markets AgEcon
Lee, Hyunok; Sumner, Daniel A..
Three trade policy changes underway and on the horizon have the prospect to alter global markets for japonica rice. This paper considers likely global market effects of expansion of access into the market in Japan and Korea, and reduced subsidy for japonica rice (among other crops) in the United States. We consider these policy changes in the context of a proposed Doha Development Agenda WTO agreement and one potential outcome of the proposed Free Trade Agreement between Korea and the United States (KUS-FTA). We use an equilibrium displacement model to ask how market prices, quantities and other aggregates change as a result of policy changes. The global model includes six aggregates in the world market, China, Korea, Japan, the United States, other...

Physical Properties of Rough and Brown Rice of Japonica, Indica and NERICA Types CIGR Journal
Kawamur, Shuso.
This research involved a study of the physical properties of rough and brown rice of various types. The effect of kernel thickness on physical properties was analyzed. Fundamental physical properties, such as dimensions, mass, and frictional characteristics, were measured for different fractions of rough and brown rice of seven different varieties: Nanatsuboshi, Yumepirika, Oborozuki (Japonica type), IR-28, IR-50, IR-64 (Indica type), and NERICA-4 (NERICA type). Results showed that, in both rough and brown rice, the physical properties of the NERICA type showed a closer relationship with the Indica type than they did with the Japonica type. Moreover, statistical analysis indicated that the physical properties were affected by kernel thickness within each...
