Morphological and Quantitative Analyses of the NADH-d Myenteric Neurons of the Jejunum of Rats Submitted to Experimental Chronic Alcoholism International Journal of Morphology
Pereira,Marli Aparecida dos Santos; Arantes,Márcia Alessandra; Molinari,Sonia Lucy; Zanoni,Jacqueline Nelisis; Miranda-Neto,Marcílio Hubner de.
The objective of our work was to verify, during an experimental period of 210 days, the possible effects of the ethanol on the morphology and density of the NADH-diaforase myenteric neurons in the jejunum of alcoholic rats. We used 10 animals (Rattus norvegicus) separated in 2 groups: the controls (n=5), that received a normal proteic diet (22%) and water ad libitum; the alcoholic, that received NUVILAB normal proteic chow (22%) and sugar cane brandy diluted at 30 Gay Lussac (30 v/v). The jejunum segment was collected and submitted to the histochemical technique to stain the nervous cells and, then, to the elaboration of membrane whole mounts. The observation through light microscopy showed that there are no expressive morphologic differences between the...

Distribution of Serotonin-immunoreactive Enterochromaffin Cells in the Gastrointestinal Tract of the Least Shrew (Cryptotis parva) International Journal of Morphology
Al-Tikriti,Mohammed S; Khamas,Wael; Chebolu,Seetha; Darmani,Nissar A.
Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter in the central (CNS) and peripheral (PNS) nervous systems. It is involved in a variety of physiological processes both in the gut and in the CNS. The present study examined the distribution of serotonin containing enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of a vomit competent species, the least shrew. These cells were easily recognized by their globular granules stained with the H&E and serotonin immune-positive stain. The immunoreactive enterochromaffin cells (IERCs) were mainly confined to the basal portion of the glandular epithelium and were distributed throughout the shrew stomach, small and large intestine. None was found to be associated with the mucosal epithelial lining. Moreover,...

Hypertrophy of NADH-diaphorase positive myenteric neurons in rat jejunum after acute infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Pereira,LS; Silva,AV; Araújo,EJA; Sant'Ana,DMG.
Toxoplasmosis, a globally distributed feline-associated zoonosis caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, affects birds and mammals, including humans. This study assesses the consequences of acute T. gondii infection for NADH-diaphorase positive myenteric neurons in rat jejunum. Ten male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) were divided into two groups: G1 (n = 5) and G2 (n = 5). Animals from G2 were orally inoculated with 500 genotype III (M7741) T. gondii oocysts. Twenty-four hours after inoculation, the animals were euthanized and had their jejuna removed, through laparotomy, and measured (length and width) to calculate their areas. Intestinal segments were submitted to NADH-diaphorase histochemistry to evidence the most metabolically active subpopulation...

Effects of in Ovo Infusion of Probiotic Strains on Performance Parameters, Jejunal Bacterial Population and Mucin Gene Expression in Broiler Chicken Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Majidi-Mosleh,A; Sadeghi,AA; Mousavi,SN; Chamani,M; Zarei,A.
ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of in ovo infusion of probiotic strains (Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecium, and Pediococcus acidilactici ) on jejunal microbial population and mucin gene expression in broiler chicken. In a completely randomized design, 0.5 ml of mediums containing 107 cfu of different probiotic strains, was administered into amniotic fluid of the 480 Cobb fetus (day 18 of incubation), with four treatments, five replicates with twenty four eggs each. For mucin gene expression, samples from the jejunum were taken on day 21 of incubation and day 3 post-hatch. Microbial profile was determined for total lactobacillus and E. coli by sampling jejunal contents on days 1 and 3 of age. Expression of the...

Dietary fiber and zinc additives on performance and intestinal health of Escherichia coli challenged piglets Scientia Agricola
Fernandes,Carolina Dias; Resende,Maíra; Rodrigues,Letícia Mendonça; Garbossa,Cesar Augusto Pospissil; Costa,Leandro Batista; Ferreira,Rony Antônio; Abreu,Márvio Lobão Teixeira de; Cantarelli,Vinícius Souza.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effects of zinc oxide and a low level of encapsulated zinc oxide, with or without dietary fiber, on the performance and intestinal health of weaned piglets. A total of 112 piglets were used, divided into four treatment groups: basal diet with zinc oxide (ZnO); basal diet with zinc oxide and dietary fiber (ZnO+DF); basal diet with encapsulated low zinc oxide (LZnOE); and basal diet with LZnOE and DF (LZnOE+DF). Piglets were challenged with E . coli K88 + , weighed weekly and the fecal score was evaluated daily. One pig per pen was slaughtered to evaluate the production of volatile fatty acids, intestinal microbial populations, intestinal morphology, and digestibility. The encapsulated zinc resulted in lower body...

Effect of phytic acid from rice and corn on morphology, cell proliferation, apoptosis and cyclooxygenase-2 expression in swine jejunal explants Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Silva,Elisângela Olegário da; Gerez,Juliana Rubira; Bracarense,Ana Paula Frederico Rodrigues Loureiro.
Phytic acid (IP6) is a potent antioxidant present in several natural foods. Beneficial effects on colon cancer and inflammation have been associated to IP6 in several studies, however, scarce data about the effect on small intestine are available. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different doses of IP6 from rice and corn on intestinal morphology, cellular proliferation, apoptosis and cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2) expression using swine jejunal explants as experimental model. This report demonstrated that explants treated with 0.5 mM, 2.5 mM and 5 mM of IP6 from rice and 2.5 mM and 5 mM from corn showed higher villi height compared to control. Explants treated with 2.5 mM and 5 mM IP6 from rice exhibited a significant reduction on...
