Chromosome numbers and karyotypes of seven specific taxa of the Chilean endemic genus Placea were determined. Chromosome numbers of P. lutea, P. ornata, P grandiflora, P germainii andP. aff davidii are described for the first time. All taxa are diploid with 2«=2x=16 and karyotypes are composed of four metacentric (4 m), ten submetacentric (10 sm), and two subtelocentric (2 st) chromosomes. The most symmetrical karyotype was observed in P. lutea (AI: 6.84) while the most asymmetrical karyotype was shown by P. arzae (AI: 9.72). The constancy in karyotype formulae and high similarity in asymmetry indexes suggest that some orthoselection mechanism might be involved in Placea's chromosomal evolution. In spite that no significant karyotypic differences were... |

The center of diversity of Argentinean orchids is in the northeast region of the country. Chromosome numbers and karyotype features of 43 species belonging to 28 genera are presented here. Five chromosome records are the first ones at the genus level; these taxa are Aspidogyne kuckzinskii (2n = 42), Eurystyles actinosophila (2n = 56), Skeptrostachys paraguayensis (2n = 46), Stigmatosema polyaden (2n = 40) and Zygostates alleniana (2n = 54). In addition, a chromosome number is presented for the first time for 15 species: Corymborkis flava (2n = 56), Cyclopogon callophyllus (2n = 28), C. oliganthus (2n = 64), Cyrtopodium hatschbachii (2n = 46), C. palmifrons (2n = 46), Galeandra beyrichii (2n = 54), Habenaria bractescens (2n = 44), Oncidium edwallii (2n =... |

Chromosome numbers and other karyological data of four Stemona spp. (Stemonaceae) from Thailand are reported. Three taxa (S. collinsae Craib, S. kerrii Craib and an unidentified species) exhibit 2n = 14 chromosomes, for S. curtisii Hook.f. a range of 2n = 13–16 was established. Based on the counts of c. 30% of the species of Stemona, x = 7 is very likely to be the basic number for the genus. Chromosome size and morphology of the investigated species are compared with literature data and show differences that might be of importance for infrageneric classification. In this connection the taxonomic position of the genus Pentastemona from Sumatra is also discussed. |

The family Archimonocelididae Meixner, 1938 has been revised. The family contains two subfamilies, each comprising two genera: the Archimonocelidinae with Archimonocelis Meixner, 1938 and Meidiama Marcus, 1946, and the Calviriinae subfam. nov. with Asilomaria Karling, 1966 and Calviria gen. nov. with 20, 2, 1, and 3 species, respectively, 13 of which are new to science. The type species of the family is redescribed. Material of all the Archimonocelididae genera has been studied and supplementary remarks are made on some known species. The karyotype of 14 species is described. Archimonocelis has a cosmopolitan distribution while Meidiama is restricted to the South American coast, Calviria to the Mediterranean, and Asilomaria to the Pacific North American... |

Based on morphological and karyological investigations, the genus complex Archiloa sensu Karling (1966) is revised. The group contains seven genera, two of which are here described as new: Archiloa de Beauchamp, 1910, Archilopsis Meixner, 1938, Mesoda Marcus, 1949, Monocelopsis Ax, 1951, Archilina Ax, 1959, Inaloa gen. n., and Tajikina gen. n. The genus Pistrix Marcus, 1951 is synonymized with Mesoda Marcus, 1949. Eleven species are transferred to other genera. Seven new Archilina species are described from the Mediterranean: A. brachycirrus, A. deceptoria, A. etrusca, A. palestinica, A. selenifera, A. biselenifera, and A. caliban. Two distinct “morphs” are recognized within A. endostyla Ax, 1959. The genus Archilina now contains 12 species, 8 of which... |

Monocelis longistyla sp.n. from littoral sandy habitats of the Mediterranean is described. The karyotypes of Monocelis fusca, M. lineata and M. longistyla sp.n. were analysed. A basic karyotype for the genus Monocelis is postulated and its probable evolution from the basic karyotype of the family Monocelididae and within the genus is discussed. The karyotype of M. longistyla seems to have evolved from the basic Monocelis karyotype by pericentric inversions. However from the analysis of the karyotype in different populations of M. lineata the species appeared not to be homogeneous (European populations versus the Canadian population). |

The genus Lippia (Verbenaceae) comprise around 160 species spread out mainly in South and Central Americas with few African species, some of them with potential medicinal use. Brazil is one the most important centers of diversity with approximately 75% of the species described so far. Innumerous species are endemic and poorly studied especially at a cytological level. Here, chromosomal length, karyomorphology and chromosome asymmetry of twelve Brazilian species of Lippia were evaluated [L. alba (Miller) N.E.Brown, L. diamantinensis Glaz., L. florida Cham., L. hermanioides Cham., L. lacunosa Mart. & Schauer, L. lupulina Cham., L. pohliana Schauer, L. pseudothea (St. Hil) Schauer, L. rosella Moldenke, L. rotundifolia Cham., L. rubella Moldenke and L.... |
