A new interstitial flatworm (Turbellaria: Promesostomidae) from the Indian Ocean Naturalis
Clerck, G.G. De.
Paraproboscifer alacerregis, representing a new genus and a new species of the interstitial typloplanoid flatworms is described from the Seychelles and Kenya. It is placed in the turbellarian family Promesostomidae, The type locality is on Mahé Island, Seychelles.

Last two decades have been dominated by issues on poverty as major growth area with the adoption by United Nations member countries of the Millennium Development Goals, the first of which calls for halving the incidence of poverty and hunger by 2015, this has underlined the importance of introduction of improved agricultural technologies. This article is based on a socio-economic impact study of the introduction and adoption of tissue-culture (tc) technology in banana production in Kenya. It attempts to demonstrate that a prudent introduction and promotion of a new biotechnological innovation in farming can make a positive contribution to the socio-economic status of resource poor farmers in a developing country, such as Kenya. Access to Land, Income Diversification and Poverty Reduction in Rural Kenya AgEcon

The increasing land scarcity and the worsening trend of poverty in Kenya in recent years have raised concerns about the focus on land-based agriculture as the basis of growth in the rural areas. This paper combines two complementary data sets obtained from two locations in Kenya, drawn against distinctively different land availability patterns, to examine the diverse rural asset base and key sources of livelihood in the rural areas. The analysis reveals that while access to productive land is still an important determinant of livelihoods in the rural areas, even where land holdings are very small, growth in farm productivity alone may not guarantee households sufficient incomes to escape poverty. Technical efficiency and technology gaps in beef cattle production systems in Kenya: A stochastic metafrontier analysis AgEcon

In this study the stochastic metafrontier method is used to investigate technical efficiency and technology gaps across three main beef cattle production systems in Kenya. Results show that there is significant inefficiency in nomadic and agro-pastoral systems. Further, in contrast with ranches, these two systems were found to have lower technology gap ratios. The average pooled technical efficiency was estimated to be 0.69, which suggests that there is considerable scope to improve beef production in Kenya

Evaluation of the Performance of Smallholder Pumped Irrigation Systems, in Arid and Semi-arid Areas of Kenya CIGR Journal

A study was carried out to evaluate the performance of smallholder pumped irrigation systems with a view of comparing if the system operated within the designed optimal engineering standards. Different parameters studied were selection, design and operations of the irrigation systems with detailed analysis on energy uses for pumping (fuel use), efficiency of pumping devices as well as pump power required and energy losses (headlosses) during pumping. Semi structured questionnaires were administered to 80 smallholder farmers practicing pumped irrigated agriculture in Mitubiri location of Kakuzi division and Kithimani sub location of Yatta division, Kenya.
