ABSTRACT We document movement patterns and home range of Diplomystes camposensis, an endemic and threatened freshwater catfish from Chile. We tracked the movements of seven individuals of different body size (13.5 to 19 cm SL) using portable radio telemetry equipment to investigate movement patterns in relation to day/night activity and habitat use in the San Pedro River (Valdivia Basin). Tracked movements and model-based analyses revealed that D. camposensis has a large home range and high mobility. The average home range was 0.068163 ± 0.033313 km2, and the average area of higher activity was 0.005646 ± 0.011386 km2. The mean linear home range was 387.4 m. The results also showed that movements were longer during the night, supporting nocturnal habits.... |

Normal, gamma and beta distributions are applied to 609 crop yield histories of Ontario farmers to determine which, if any, best describe crop yields. In addition, a distribution free non-parametric kernel estimator was applied to the same data to determine its efficiency in premium estimation relative to the three parametric forms. Results showed that crop yields are most likely to be described by a beta distribution but only for 50% of those tested. In terms of efficiency in premium estimation, minimum error criteria supports use of a kernel estimator for premium setting. However, this gain in efficiency comes at the expense of added complexity. |

Local polynomial regression is a generalization of local mean smoothing as described by Nadaraya (1964) and Watson (1964). Instead of fitting a local mean, one instead fits a local pth-order polynomial. Calculations for local polynomial regression are naturally more complex than those for local means, but local polynomial smooths have better statistical properties. The computational complexity may, however, be alleviated by using a Stata plugin. In this article, we describe the locpoly command for performing local polynomial regression. The calculations involved are implemented in both ado-code and with a plugin, allowing the user to assess the speed improvement obtained from using the plugin. Source code for the plugin is also provided as part of the... |

The kernel of the cutia nut (castanha-de-cutia, Couepia edulis (Prance) Prance) of the western Amazon, which is consumed by the local population, has traditionally been extracted from the nut with a machete, a dangerous procedure that only produces kernels cut in half. A shelling off machine prototype, which produces whole kernels without serious risks to its operator, is described and tested. The machine makes a circular cut in the central part of the fruit shell, perpendicular to its main axis. Three ways of conditioning the fruits before cutting were compared: (1) control; (2) oven drying immediately prior to cutting; (3) oven drying, followed by a 24-hour interval before cutting. The time needed to extract and separate the kernel from the endocarp and... |

Abstract Macauba (Acrocomia aculeata) has mainly been evaluated as an oil source focused on biodiesel production. Furthermore, the fruit mesocarp and kernel are edible, and candies, jelly, sweet alcoholic liquor and ice cream are also produced from the mesocarp. Despite its consumption, there is still a lack of information on the nutritional composition of macauba. Selected macauba genotypes producing fruits with a sweet mesocarp were evaluated regarding the fruit characteristics, proximate composition, oil content and fatty acid profile. The mesocarp total sugar (fructose and glucose) content ranged from 4.5 to 9.6 g/100 g, total dietary fiber varied from 6.8 to 9.3 g/100 g, while protein content was up to 2.2 g/100 g (wet basis). There was a significant... |

Almond seed extraction from whole kernel recovery is a process which is usually performed manually thus making it laborious and time consuming. The purpose of this paper is to investigate a means for almond seed extraction for whole kernel recovery to close the gap in domestic, commercial and industrial demand of almond seeds for food and industrial processing. The machine comprises of four units: the hopper; the cracking chamber which embeds the shaft, the hammer and electric motor. SolidWorks software was used to determine the responses of the machine critical elements. The sample of almond fruits used was picked from the premises of University of Ilorin, Kwara State. The fruit (almond) was properly prepared by removing the fleshy parts from it and... |

At the duration of this study, a sample of 100 intact apricot fruits, canino variety were selected randomly. The seeds were shelled using a nutcracker and the intact kernels were separated manually. Then, some apricot seed and kernel physical and mechanical properties were determined as relative parameters for designing the apricot seed kernels separator. The obtained results may be summarized as follows:At 7.13% (w.b.) apricot seeds moisture content, the length, width and thickness values were 18.90, 16.48 and 11.31 mm, respectively. The surface area, projected area, volume, arithmetic mean diameter, geometric mean diameter, sphericity and aspect ratio values were 727.09 mm2, 244.60 mm2, 1847.69 mm3, 15.56 mm, 15.20 mm, 80.61 % and 87.53 %, respectively.... |

Sweet corn (Zea mays L. var. saccharata) attracts people with its amazing flavour. Adverse environmental factors decrease plant's cob yield and quality. A more effective production can be made by using resistant varieties and adjusting the sowing and plating periods. In this study, the effect of direct seed sowing and cultivating with seedlings in three different times (5, 15 and 25 May) on the sweet corn's cob yield and certain quality features have been investigated. In the research hybrid sweet corn varieties; 2201, Challenger, Merit, Sunshine and Yellow Baby were used. Ear weight, ear yield, ear length, ear diameter, sequence in ear, kernel numbers in the sequence, dry weight, TSS, chroma and hue values have been identified in the study. The values... |
