SOUZA ROCHA,Katarine de; SCHUPP DE SENA MESQUITA,Gleiciane; SILVA FERREIRA,Maeli Fernanda; LEITE BARROS,Flávia de Nazaré; MACEDO,Renata Cecília Soares de Lima; ARAÚJO SARAIVA,Elane de; MENDES-OLIVEIRA,Ana Cristina; DUARTE CERQUEIRA,Valíria; SCOFIELD,Alessandra; GOES CAVALCANTE,Gustavo; ABEL,Isis; GUIMARÃES DE MORAES,Carla Cristina.
ABSTRACT We analyzed the presence of Leptospira spp. in liver and kidney tissue of wild marsupials and rodents trapped in a periurban forest in the eastern Brazilian Amazon. We examined 25 individuals of four marsupial and seven rodent species for the presence of the 16S rRNA gene of Leptospira in the DNA extracted from 47 liver and kidney tissue samples using PCR. We detected positive samples in 12% (3/25) of the individuals, in kidney fragments of two marsupial species (Didelphis marsupialis and Marmosops pinheiroi) and in a liver fragment of one rodent species (Echimys chrysurus). These are the first records of Leptospira spp. in M. pinheiroi and E. chrysurus and it is the first molecular survey of marsupials and rodents in the Brazilian Amazon.

Variations in human renal arteries - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i2.11178 Biological Sciences
Soares, Tania Regina Santos; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Ferraz, Juliana Soares; Faculdade Ingá; Dartibale, Camila Buziquia; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Oliveira, Inandiara Rafaella Marco; Faculdade Ingá.
Kidneys are especially irrigated by a pair of arteries originated from the aorta artery. The presence of additional renal arteries is the most frequent variation in this vascularization, an aspect important to be known in renal surgeries and radiological procedures (SAMPAIO; PASSOS, 1992). This study aimed to observe the prevalence of numeric variation and the origin of the additional renal artery. For this purpose, 24 cadavers and 26 blocks were used; each block contained the kidneys and their respective arteries and veins, the abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava, taken from adults of different ethnicity and genders, from the Department of Morphological Science, State University of Maringá (DCM/UEM) and Laboratory of Anatomy, Ingá Faculty (UNINGÁ)....

The Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Regulator (CFTR) in the kidney Anais da ABC (AABC)
MORALES,MARCELO M.; FALKENSTEIN,DORIS; LOPES,ANÍBAL GIL.
The cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) is a Cl- channel. Mutations of this transporter lead to a defect of chloride secretion by epithelial cells causing the Cystic Fibrosis disease (CF). In spite of the high expression of CFTR in the kidney, patients with CF do not show major renal dysfunction, but it is known that both the urinary excretion of drugs and the renal capacity to concentrate and dilute urine is deficient. CFTR mRNA is expressed in all nephron segments and its protein is involved with chloride secretion in the distal tubule, and the principal cells of the cortical (CCD) and medullary (IMCD) collecting ducts. Several studies have demonstrated that CFTR does not only transport Cl- but also secretes ATP and, thus, controls other...

SILVA,NATHALIA A.; ALBUQUERQUE,CLEIDE M.R.; MARINHO,ALINE D.; JORGE,ROBERTA J.B.; SILVA NETO,ANTONIO G.; MONTEIRO,HELENA S.A.; SILVA,TÚLIO D.; SILVA,MÁRCIA V.; CORREIA,MARIA TEREZA S.; PEREIRA,TICIANA P.; MARTINS,ALICE M.C.; MENEZES,DALGIMAR B.; XIMENES,RAFAEL M.; MARTINS,RENÉ D..
ABSTRACT Scorpions belonging to the Tityus genus are of medical interest in Brazil. Among them, Tityus stigmurus is the main scorpion responsible for stings in the Northeast region. After a sting, the scorpion venom distributes rapidly to the organs, reaching the kidneys quickly. However, there are few studies concerning the renal pathophysiology of scorpion poisoning. In this study, we evaluated the effects of T. stigmurus venom (TsV) on renal parameters in isolated rat kidneys. Wistar rats (n = 6), weighing 250-300 g, were perfused with Krebs-Henseleit solution containing 6 g/100 mL bovine serum albumin. TsV at 0.3 and 1.0 μg/mL was tested, and the effects on perfusion pressure (PP), renal vascular resistance (RVR), urinary flow (UF), glomerular...

Protective effect of aqueous suspension of dried latex of Calotropis procera against oxidative stress and renal damage in diabetic rats Biocell
Kumar,Vijay L.; Padhy,Biswa M..
Calotropis species have been used in the traditional medicinal system for the treatment of diseases of the liver and abdomen. In view of the antioxidant and anti-hyperglycemic properties of an aqueous suspension obtained from the dried latex of Calotropis procera, the present study was carried out to evaluate its efficacy in affording protection against alloxan induced changes in rat kidney. A single intraperitoneal injection of alloxan (150 mg/kg) in rats produced hyperglycemia within 3 days and altered kidney functions over a period of 90 days. Daily oral administration of the aqueous suspension (100 and 400 mg/kg) in diabetic rats produced anti-hyperglycemic effect that was comparable to that of glibenclamide (10 mg/kg). Unlike glibenclamide, the...

Structure of the kidney of Bufo arenarum: Intermediate segment, distal tubule and collecting tubule Biocell
Farías,Alejandro; Hermida,Gladys Noemí; Fiorito,Luisa Eleonora.
The ultrastructure of the intermediate segment (IS), distal tubule and collecting tubule (CT) of the south american toad Bufo arenarum, was studied by light and transmission electron microscopy. The IS is composed of cubical ciliated cells which propel the urine along the renal tubule. The distal tubule is divided into two portions: the early distal tubule (EDT) and the late distal tubule (LDT). The EDT is characterized by only one type of cells with well developed basolateral interdigitations and numerous elongated mitochondria, which are oriented normal to the basal surface. The "macula densa - like" is a specialized zone of the EDT in contact with the vascular pole, where cells are more tightly packed than in the rest of the tubule. The LDT shows two...

Li,Kailong; Du,Xiaolan; He,Yani; Zhao,Lin; Yang,Jvrong; Song,Ruihua; Chen,Lin.
Objective: To investigate the course of tubular cell senescence and expressions of p53, p21, and Rb during the late phase of ischemia/reperfusion (IRI) in the kidney, and assess the effects of the p53-Rb pathway on tubular cell senescence. Methods: Experimental models of unilateral renal IRI were used in p53(+/+) and p53(-/-) mice. Histological changes at the tubular level, progress of cell senescence, and the expression of Rb, p21, and/or p53 proteins in tubular cells were studied at different moments in time after IRI. Results: Chronic tubulointerstitial fibrosis was much more severe and widely distributed in IRI kidneys of p53(+/+) mice in later stages than in earlier stages. Senescent tubular cells were significantly increased at 3 and 6 months after...

Variable number tandem repeats in the promoter region of prostacyclin synthase gene in choline deficient rats Biocell
Denninghoff,Valeria C.; Ossani,Georgina P.; Uceda,Ana M.; Avagnina,Maria A.; Elsner,Boris; Monserrat,Alberto J..
Weanling Sprague-Dawley rats were fed on a choline-deficient diet with hydrogenated vegetable oil and corn oil as lipids develop acute renal failure. Pathogenesis of the latter is controversial and an ischemic mechanism has been proposed. Arachidonic acid derivatives are involved in the regulation of vascular tonus. Vasospasm could be due to an increase in tromboxane A2-mediated vasoconstriction or to a decrease in prostacyclin-induced vasodilatation. Enzymes involved in the synthesis of both compounds are tromboxane A2- and prostacyclin-synthase respectively. The aim of this study was to identify the variable number tandem repeats (VNTR) in the promoter region of prostacyclin synthase gene and verify if there exists a relationship between the occurrence...

Du,Guankui; Xiao,Man; Zhang,Xuezi; Wen,Maoyu; Pang,Chi; Jiang,Shangfei; Sang,Shenggang; Xie,Yiqiang.
Abstract Background A number of dysregulated miRNAs have been identified and are proposed to have significant roles in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus or renal pathology. Alpinia oxyphylla has shown significant anti-inflammatory properties and play an anti-diabetes role. The objective of this study was to detect the alteration of miRNAs underlying the anti-diabetes effects of A. oxyphylla extract (AOE) in a type II diabetic animal model (C57BIKsj db-/db-). Results Treatment with AOE for 8 weeks led to lower concentrations of blood glucose, urine albumin, and urine creatinine. 17 and 13 miRNAs were statistically identified as differentially regulated in the DB/DB and db-/db- AOE mice, respectively, compared to the untreated db-/db- mice. Tissue mRNA expression in rat of newly described matrix metalloproteinases Biol. Res.
BERNAL,FABIÁN; HARTUNG,HANS-PETER; KIESEIER,BERND C.
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) comprise a large group of endoproteinases that degrade all protein components of the extracellular matrix. Functionally, MMPs contribute to several different physiological as well as pathological conditions. The number of newly described MMPs has increased in recent years, although current knowledge about their expression pattern in various tissues remains incomplete. Here we analyzed the relative mRNA expression of the most recently described MMPs _ MT5-MMP (MMP-24), MT6-MMP (MMP-25), MMP-27 and epilysin (MMP-28) _ in a broad selection of rat tissues using real time-PCR. MMP-24 mRNA was found to be widely expressed with predominance in the central nervous system. MMP-25 mRNA, in contrast, exhibited peak expression levels...

Müzell,Denise Pereira; Lunardelli,Adroaldo; Leite,Carlos Eduardo; Fagundes,Rodrigo Medeiros; Saciura,Vasyl Custódio; Reichel,Carlos Luiz; Oliveira,Jarbas Rodrigues de; Astarita,Leandro Vieira.
This study assessed the bioactive properties of an aqueous extract of M. officinalis for its anti-inflammatory activity and its protection against hepatic and renal lesions induced by acetaminophen (APAP). Animals pre-treated with the crude extract in pleurisy induced by carrageenan showed a reduction in the amounts of exudate, in the numbers of leukocytes and polymorphonuclear cells. Intragastric administration of the extract for seven days prior to the APAP-induced lesion showed no protective effect on the liver. The treatment with the extract induced an increase of serum aspartate aminotransferase, indicating a rise of toxicity. Contrarily, the same treatment reduced the APAP induced lesion in kidney, with respect to ν-glutamyltransferase. The results...

Lycopene Protects the Diabetic Rat Kidney Against Oxidative Stress-mediated Oxidative Damage Induced by Furan BABT
Pandir,Dilek; Unal,Betul; Bas,Hatice.
Furan is a food and environmental contaminant and a potent carcinogen in animals. Lycopene is one dietary carotenoid found in fruits such as tomato, watermelon and grapefruit. The present study was designed to explore the protective effect of lycopene against furan-induced oxidative damage in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat kidney. At the end of the experimental period (28 days), we found that lycopene markedly decreased the malondialdehide (MDA) levels in the kidney, urea, uric acid and creatinine levels in the serum of furan-treated rats. The increase of histopathology in the kidney of furan-treated rats were effectively suppressed by lycopene. Furthermore, lycopene markedly restored superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione...
