During the investigation of a shallow brackish water pond in northern Belgium, attention was paid to the quantitative occurrence of several micro-metazoan groups of the benthos: hydrozoa, oligochaeta, nematoda, copepoda and ostracoda. These groups show a succession in time, each group having a different moment of maximum abundance.

During a research of a shallow brackish water sheet, the Dievengat, located on the territory of the region of Knokke, some copepoda were collected, amongst which three that had not previously been found in Belgium. The items originate from soil samples through means of a glass tube with a diameter of 6 cm²; it concerns a soil rich in detritus. The water is about 20 cm in depth at the location of the sample taking. Samples were taken over the period from August 1968 until May 1969. The salinity is susceptible to a relatively wide variation. The reproductive potential of 3 harpacticoid and 1 cyclopoid copepods, measured by the intrinsic rate of natural increase, was calculated from field data. Calculated values are much smaller than those obtained from laboratory experiments. The difference between species is small and cannot account for differences in occurrence.

Monhystrella parelegantula (De Coninck,1943) Andrassy, 1981, a new nematode record for the Belgian coastal area, has been isolated from two brackish water lagoons, the Dievengat near Knokke and the Sluice Dock of Ostend. This paper presents the first detailed morphological and morphometric data for the different stages of the life cycle, including the rare males. The systematic position and the ecological importance of the species are discussed.

A Nereis diversicolor population inhabiting a shallow and landlocked brackishwater pond in Belgium has been studied over one year to estimate its production. This population reproduces from May to December with a peak in August. Total numbers vary between 5,000 and 17,000 individuals/m², the total standing stock lies between 13 and 39 g dry weight per m², with a mean of 24 g dry wt m-2. Individuals grow linearly over long periods of time, although slower when they get larger.
