The air dry-bulb temperature (t db),as well as the black globe humidity index (BGHI), exert great influence on the development of broiler chickens during their heating phase. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the structure and the magnitude of the t db and BGHI spatial variability, using geostatistics tools such as semivariogram analysis and also producing kriging maps. The experiment was conducted in the west mesoregion of the states of Minas Gerais in 2010, in a commercial broiler house with heating system consisting of two furnaces that heat the air indirectly, in the firsts 14 days of the birds' life. The data were registered at intervals of five minutes in the period from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The variables were evaluated by variograms... |

In this paper we define the method used to merge high resolution multi-sensor chlorophyll-a data on the Ireland-Biscay-Iberia Regional Ocean Observing System (IBI-ROOS) area at a resolution of 0.015 degrees. The method is based on geostatistics and is known as kriging. The merged variable is the anomaly of chlorophyll-a, the anomaly being defined for a day as the difference between the daily image and the mean historical field for that day. The used chlorophyll-a dataset is derived from the daily level-2 water leaving radiances of the Sea-viewing Wide Field of View Sensor (SeaWiFS) of the Orbview platform, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) of the Aqua platform and the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer Instrument (MERIS) of the... |

The eastern English Channel, which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the North Sea through the Dover Strait, is an area where numerous and often conflicting human activities take place. A cross-border multidisciplinary project called CHARM was initiated to provide knowledge and tools for planners and decision-makers to durably manage the shared marine living resources. One such tool was an atlas of fish spatial distributions and modelled habitats, which was used here to investigate ontogenic and seasonal shifts in fish spatial distribution and habitat through a case-study, the dab Limanda limanda. Survey data for several life-history stages (eggs, larvae, coastal nurseries, < and > 1 year old) and seasons were used to map spatial patterns (using... |

In this paper, we define the method that is used to merge high-resolution multisensor chlorophyll-a (chl-a) data on the Ireland-Biscay-Iberia Regional Ocean Observing System area from 1998 to the present at a resolution of 1.1 km. The method is based on geostatistics and is known as kriging. The merged variable is the daily anomaly of chl-a, with the anomaly being defined as the difference between the daily image and the mean historical field for the considered day. For each day, the continuous anomaly image is generated using the kriging method, and the mean historical field is then added to obtain the cloudless field of chl-a. The initial satellite chl-a data set used in the merging procedure is derived from the daily level-2 water leaving radiances of... |

Intertidal flats of the estuarine macro-intertidal Baie des Veys (France) were investigated to identify spatial features of sediment and microphytobenthos (MPB) in April 2003. Gradients occurred within the domain, and patches were identified close to vegetated areas or within the oyster-farming areas where calm physical conditions and biodeposition altered the sediment and MPB landscapes. Spatial patterns of chl a content were explained primarily by the influence of sediment features, while bed elevation and compaction brought only minor insights into MPB distribution regulation. The smaller size of MPB patches compared to silt patches revealed the interplay between physical structure defining the sediment landscape, the biotic patches that they contain,... |

The spatial distribution of the three principal species of sharpshooter (Dilobopterus costalimai Young, Acrogonia sp. e Oncometopia facialis Signoret), vectors of Xylella fastidiosa causal agent of Citrus Variegated Chlorosis, was studied by using geostatistics. The evaluations were carried out in a commercial 'Pera' sweet orange (Citrus sinensis [L.] Osb.) grove budded on Rangpur lime (Citrus limonia Osb.) located at Bebedouro, São Paulo state, aiming to establish better means for vector and disease control. The sharpshooters were monitored using with 50 uniformly distributed 3" x 5" yellow sticky traps hanging down in branches at 1.5 m up to the ground, which were replaced monthly. Acrogonia sp. was the prevalent species sampled. The results were used to... |

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), is one of the chief pests of maize in the Americas. The study of its spatial distribution is fundamental for designing correct control strategies, improving sampling methods, determining actual and potential crop losses, and adopting precise agricultural techniques. In São Paulo state, Brazil, a maize field was sampled at weekly intervals, from germination through harvest, for caterpillar densities, using quadrates. In each of 200 quadrates, 10 plants were sampled per week. Harvest weights were obtained in the field for each quadrate, and ear diameters and lengths were also sampled (15 ears per quadrate) and used to estimate potential productivity of the quadrate. Geostatistical analyses of caterpillar... |

ABSTRACT: The pattern of variation in soil and landform properties in relation to environmental covariates are closely related to soil type distribution. The aim of this study was to apply digital soil mapping techniques to analysis of the pattern of soil property variation in relation to environmental covariates under periglacial conditions at Keller Peninsula, Maritime Antarctica. We considered the hypothesis that covariates normally used for environmental correlation elsewhere can be adequately employed in periglacial areas in Maritime Antarctica. For that purpose, 138 soil samples from 47 soil sites were collected for analysis of soil chemical and physical properties. We tested the correlation between soil properties (clay, potassium, sand, organic... |

ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine and spatialize the soil quality index (SQI), in relation to chemical and physical attributes, and evaluate its use in the payment for environmental services in the Sub-Basin of Posses, Extrema-MG, Brazil, which represents the Atlantic Forest Biome. SQI values were influenced by both the replacement of native forests by stands of eucalyptus and by pastures and annual crops, reflecting in the reduction of soil quality in the sampled layer in the evaluated systems. The spatialization of SQI showed values ranging from 0.40 to 0.80, with some specific areas with high values and others with values above 1.00 (native forest). The reforestation with eucalyptus conditioned most of the soils with low chemical and physical... |
