Morphology and molecular phylogeny of prorocentrum consutum sp. nov. (dinophyceae), a new benthic dinoflagellate from south Brittany (northwestern France) ArchiMer
Chomerat, Nicolas; Sellos, Daniel Y.; Zentz, Frederic; Nezan, Elisabeth.
A new marine benthic Prorocentrum species from sandy habitats of South Brittany (northwestern France), P. consutum sp. nov., is described using LM and SEM and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Cells have a subcircular to broadly ovoid shape and are plainly flattened. They are 57-61 lm long and 52-55 lm wide. A central pyrenoid is present, and the kidney-shaped nucleus is positioned in the posterior region. In right valve view, the periflagellar area is deeply excavated, and the left valve forms a prominent apical ridge. The periflagellar area consists of nine platelets, and a small narrow collar is present around the flagellar pore. The ornamentation of this new species is very peculiar and is characterized by a ring of round areolae located at the...

Ailadinium reticulatum gen. et sp. nov. (Dinophyceae), a New Thecate, Marine, Sand-Dwelling Dinoflagellate from the Northern Red Sea ArchiMer
Saburova, Maria; Chomerat, Nicolas.
A new photosynthetic, sand-dwelling marine dinoflagellate, Ailadinium reticulatum gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Jordanian coast in the Gulf of Aqaba, northern Red Sea, based on detailed morphological and molecular data. A. reticulatum is a large (53–61 μm long and 38–48 μm wide), dorsoventrally compressed species, with the epitheca smaller than the hypotheca. The theca of this new species is thick and peculiarly ornamented with round to polygonal depressions forming a foveate-reticulate thecal surface structure. The Kofoidian thecal tabulation is APC (Po, cp), 4′, 2a, 6′′, 6c, 4s, 6′′′, 1p, 1′′′′ or alternatively it can be interpreted as APC, 4′, 2a, 6′′, 6c, 4s, 6′′′, 2′′′′. The plate pattern of A. reticulatum is noticeably different from...

A taxonomical study of benthic Prorocentrum species (Prorocentrales, Dinophyceae) from Anse Dufour (Martinique Island, eastern Caribbean Sea) ArchiMer
Chomérat, Nicolas; Bilien, Gwenael; Zentz, Frédéric.
About 30 benthic Prorocentrum species have been described, some of which producing okadaic acid and derivatives involved in diarrhetic shellfish poisoning. The western Caribbean has been extensively studied for benthic dinoflagellates associated with ciguatera, and fifteen Prorocentrum species were described from mangroves and coral reefs of Belize. In contrast, no study reported the diversity of this genus in the Eastern Caribbean, especially in the Lesser Antilles. This study adds to the biodiversity knowledge in Martinique Island by investigating one site of the Caribbean coast from 2010 to 2017. Sediment samples were collected each year in March and studied taxonomically. Identification was realized morphologically by scanning electron microscopy,...

Ostreopsis lenticularis Y. Fukuyo (Dinophyceae, Gonyaulacales) from French Polynesia (South Pacific Ocean): A revisit of its morphology, molecular phylogeny and toxicity ArchiMer
Chomérat, Nicolas; Bilien, Gwenael; Derrien, Amelie; Henry, Kévin; Ung, André; Viallon, Jérôme; Darius, Hélène Taiana; Mahana Iti Gatti, Clémence; Roué, Mélanie; Hervé, Fabienne; Réveillon, Damien; Amzil, Zouher; Chinain, Mireille.
To date, the genus Ostreopsis comprises eleven described species, of which seven are toxigenic and produce various compounds presenting a major threat to human and environmental health. The taxonomy of several of these species however remains controversial, as it was based mostly on morphological descriptions leading, in some cases, to ambiguous interpretations and even possible misidentifications. The species Ostreopsis lenticularis was first described by Y. Fukuyo from French Polynesia using light microscopy observations, but without genetic information associated. The present study aims at revisiting the morphology, molecular phylogeny and toxicity of O. lenticularis based on the analysis of 47 strains isolated from 4 distinct locales of French...

Huia caspica gen. & comb. nov., a dinoflagellate species that recently crossed the marine-freshwater boundary ArchiMer
Gu, Haifeng; Mertens, Kenneth; Liu, Tingting.
The dinoflagellate subfamily Diplopsalidoideae encompasses 11 genera whose plate patterns show a large diversity. In a recently published molecular phylogeny (Liu et al. 2015) some of these genera (e.g. Diplopsalis, Diplopelta) are polyphyletic, suggesting that further subdivision of these genera is needed. Here we established the cyst-theca relationship of Diplopsalis caspica by incubating cysts collected from the East China Sea. Cells of D. caspica display a plate formula of Po, X, 3′, 1a, 6″, 3c+t, ?4s, 5″′, 1″″, characterized by a small, parallelogrammic anterior intercalary plate (1a) located in the middle of the dorsal part of the epitheca. The cysts are spherical and smooth-walled with a theropylic archeopyle. In addition, we obtained four large...

Taxonomy, DNA barcoding and phylogeny of three new species of Pythium from Canada Naturalis
Bala, K.; Robideau, G.P.; Désaulniers, N.; Cock, A.W.A.M. de; Lévesque, C.A..
Three new species of Pythium, namely, P. oopapillum, P. emineosum and P. camurandrum are presented in this paper based on morphological descriptions and molecular phylogenetic characterisation. These new species were isolated from various ecological regions in Canada. They have unique morphological features in the genus Pythium, and form distinct clades in maximum parsimony analyses, which are also supported by maximum likelihood phylogeny using general time reversible model (GTR), and Bayesian inference (BI) phylogeny using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis methods. A comparative study of the new species with closely related taxa, their clade positions, and morphological features are described in this paper.
