Labor markets and labor allocative efficiency among farm households in western Kenya AgEcon
Kamau, Mercy W.; Burger, Kees; Giller, Ken E.; Kuyvenhoven, Arie.
This paper evaluates how efficiently farm households allocate labor between farm and off-farm activities. It estimates farm and off-farm labor supply functions to determine the factors that influence labor allocation. Both the shadow wage and the off-farm wage rate are included as regressors in the supply functions. The study reveals that, on average, farm households are inefficient, but when linked to labor markets their productivity and internal efficiency increase. The decision to sell labor is influenced by location, and off-farm employment is difficult to find, particularly for the better educated. Interventions should aim to increase opportunities for off-farm employment for persons with skills or with higher than the basic level of education, and to...

An Examination of Gender Wage Differences Among Graduates of the Agribusiness Department, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California AgEcon
Wolf, Marianne McGarry; Qenani-Petrela, Eivis.
Utilizing an original and extended data set containing information on annual wages, demographic and personal characteristics, we examine gender differences in the wages of the graduates of the agribusiness department. The regression analysis suggests that after controlling for the main characteristics that affect earnings, significant differences in wages of men and women still remain present. This study provides new empirical evidence on the gender wage gap in the labor market for the agricultural graduates.

Poverty Effects of the Minimum Wage: The Role of Household Employment Composition AgEcon
Fields, Gary S.; Han, Baran; Kanbur, Ravi.
sector employment, uncovered sector employment, and unemployment. The impact of these labor market adjustments on absolute poverty will depend on how the pattern of employment composition changes within households and on how income is shared within households. An earlier paper (Fields and Kanbur, 2007) focused on the income-sharing dimension of the problem. The present paper focuses on household employment composition. For a particular structure of the labor market— one with good jobs, bad jobs, unemployment, and adult and youth workers— and with a particular model of how the sectoral patterns of employment are translated into household employment composition, we analyze the impact of minimum wages on a class of absolute poverty measures. The precise...

Vietnam’s New Environmental Tax Law: What Will it Cost? Who Will Pay? AgEcon
Coxhead, Ian A.; Van Chan, Nguyen.
We examine the effects of a proposed environmental tax in a small open developing economy, using an applied general equilibrium model linked to a household survey database. The burden of the tax, applied primarily to fossil fuels, is passed forward by non-traded industries and backward by industries selling into the world market. It causes efficiency and competitiveness losses equivalent to those of a real exchange rate appreciation, and since export industries are in general highly labor-intensive, is regressive and thus poverty-increasing. The budget-neutral use of increased tax revenues to raise spending on anti-poverty programs can offset most of the losses of poor households, but does not create new jobs. The extent of overall losses and their...

Modeling Price Response of Farm Households Under Imperfect Labor Markets: A Farm Household Approach to Family Farms in Poland AgEcon
Henning, Christian H.C.A.; Henningsen, Arne.
In the paper a flexible FHM approach is estimated to model price responses of farm households under imperfect labor markets. In contrast to former studies the model explicitly incorporates simultaneously fixed and variable transaction costs as well as heterogeneity. Main results are: (i) In the general approach non-separability not only occurs if households are autarkic, but also when households participate in labor markets. (ii) Under imperfect labor markets, price responses are ambiguous and differ for the non-separable and separable model. However, econometric analysis indicates only moderate differences between the two models except for crop production for which an inverse supply response is estimated.

The Brazilian agribusiness labor market: measurement, characterization and analysis of income differentials Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Castro,Nicole Rennó; Barros,Geraldo Sant’Ana de Camargo; Almeida,Alexandre Nunes; Gilio,Leandro; Morais,Ana Carolina de Paula.
Abstract: Although the Brazilian agribusiness sector’s relevance to the country has been widely recognized nowadays, to date, no study has been developed to evaluate the level of employment in this sector as a whole for Brazil. Therefore, the first objective of this study is to access the Brazilian agribusiness labor market, and to measure it, analyze its structure and characterize its workers. Agribusiness worker income differentials were also contrasted with income differentials in the aggregated non-agribusiness labor force. The main results from the study are as follows: a) in 2017, 18.2 million individuals, 20.1% of the country’s labor force, worked in the Brazilian agribusiness sector; b) agribusiness workers were predominately unskilled or...

Labor and Employment in Brazilian Northeastern Agriculture: a look at the 2004-2014 period Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Balsadi,Otavio Valentim; DelGrossi,Mauro Eduardo.
Abstract: The labor market in the Brazilian Northeastern agriculture is characterized by many forms of occupation, ranging from the salaried work to the various forms of family work. In a heterogeneous and diverse agriculture, there is a complex labor market, with changes in recent times. Therefore, it is necessary to keep a watchful eye on important structural features. As a result, this paper aims to analyze the main aspects related to work and employment relations in the Brazilian Northeastern agriculture in the 2004-2014 period. The sources of information are special tabulations from the National Survey by Household Sample (PNAD), conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Equity, quality and relevance in higher education in Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Schwartzman,Simon.
Brazilian higher education has doubled its size in the 1990s, going from 1.5 million to more than 3 million students in the period. This expansion was mostly due to the growth of private education, which, in 2002, accounted for about two thirds of the enrollment. Is expansion making higher education more accessible to persons coming from the poorer segments of society? Is the quality of higher education suffering by the speed of this expansion? Is Brazil educating enough qualified persons to attend to the country's needs to participate in the new, knowledge-intensive and global economy? What public policies should be implemented, in order to foster the values of social equity and relevance? What are the policy implications of these developments? This...

The paradigmatic field of usage of the theoretical category of pluriactivity in Brazil Ciência Rural
Silva,Márcia Danielly Cavalcanti; Fiúza,Ana Louise De Carvalho; Pinto,Neide Maria de Almeida.
ABSTRACT: The lack of interpretive convergence around an analytical category or concept generates a field of disputes around the understanding of a certain phenomenon. This is also the case with “pluriactivity”, on which there remain interpretive divergences derived from its conception. This research aims to identify the interpretive tendencies that are gaining traction in Brazil. For that, the research used as a database the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD - “Biblioteca Digital Brasileira de Teses e Dissertações”), since this type of database compiles and updates the state of the art on the subject. The research universe consisted of 115 dissertations and theses were systematized and analyzed using IRAMUTEQ software. Results...
