Observations of turbulence within the surf and swash zone of a field-scale sandy laboratory beach ArchiMer
Brinkkemper, J. A.; Lanckriet, T.; Grasso, Florent; Puleo, J. A.; Ruessink, B. G..
Current coastal-evolution models generally lack the ability to accurately predict bed level change in shallow (<~2 m) water, which is, at least partly, due to the preclusion of the effect of surface-induced turbulence on sand suspension and transport. As a first step to remedy this situation, we investigated the vertical structure of turbulence in the surf and swash zone using measurements collected under random shoaling and plunging waves on a steep (initially 1:15) field-scale sandy laboratory beach. Seaward of the swash zone, turbulence was measured with a vertical array of three Acoustic Doppler Velocimeters (ADVs), while in the swash zone two vertically spaced acoustic doppler velocimeter profilers (Vectrino profilers) were applied. The vertical...

Behaviour of a floc population during a tidal cycle: laboratory experiments and numerical modelling ArchiMer
Verney, Romaric; Lafite, Robert; Brun-cottan, Jean Claude; Le Hir, Pierre.
An approach combining laboratory experiments and numerical modelling was used to investigate the behaviour of a floc population during an idealized tidal cycle. The experiment was conducted on suspended sediments at a concentration of 93 mg l−1 collected in the field. It was based on a jar test device to reproduce tidal-induced turbulence and coupled with a CCD camera system and image post-processing software to monitor floc size distribution. At the same time, a 0D size-class based aggregation/fragmentation model (FLOCMOD) was developed to simulate changes in the floc population over the tidal cycle. Experimental results revealed strong variability of the behaviour of microfloc and macrofloc populations with respect to the varying shear rates observed in...

Trust and Electronic Commerce in the Agrifood Sector. A Trust Model and Experimental Experiences AgEcon
Fritz, Melanie; Hausen, Tobias; Schiefer, Gerhard; Canavari, Maurizio.
Opportunities coming from electronic commerce provide interesting support options for the Agrifood sector. However, due to the product specific information asymmetry in the agrifood sector, the anonymity of the medium creates a lack of trust increasing transaction costs to engage in e-commerce. This paper develops a trust model for electronic commerce in the agrifood industry allowing for the analysis of trust determinants in traditional agrifood transaction relationships and their transfer to appropriate trust determinants in the e-commerce environment. First experimental results validating the suitability of the model to derive appropriate electronic trust generating elements for a given agrifood transaction environment are presented.

Finding the Stronger Impact among Bribery, Financial Reward, and Religious Attitude: The Insights of Experiment on Environmental Tax Compliance in Indonesia AgEcon
Iskandar, Deden Dinar; Wuenscher, Tobias.
The degradation of environmental quality has been one of the main concerns in Indonesia. The government has mentioned the environmental tax as the instrument of environmental management; however, the primary potential problem will be the issue of compliance. Inspired by the situation in Indonesia, this study is expected to contribute on environmental regulation and tax compliance literatures by examining and comparing the impact of bribery, financial reward, and religious attitude on compliance in a developing country where the bribery prevails. The study employs laboratory experiment approach. The results indicate that bribery has the strongest impact; the presence of bribery significantly worsens the compliance. Financial reward enhances the compliance...

Predation effects of Melanoides tuberculatus Müller 1774) on periphytic biofilm colonization: an experimental approach Biota Neotropica
Vasconcelos,Janiele França; Barbosa,José Etham de Lucena; Azevêdo,Evaldo de Lira; Azevêdo,Daniele Jovem da Silva; Anacleto,Maria José Pinheiro.
The present study evaluated the predation effects of the gastropod Melanoides tuberculatus on the taxa richness and density of the periphyton community. A laboratory experiment was conducted with two treatments: control (without M. tuberculatus) and with M. tuberculatus, each treatment being replicated four times. For periphyton colonization, glass slides were placed in 3.5 L of water from the environment of the gastropods. The analysis of species richness and density of the periphyton community on these artificial substrates showed significant differences (p <0.05) between treatments. In the treatment with M. tuberculatus, taxa richness and density were lower, with a predominance of Chantrasia macrospora in the last days of the experiment. It follows...
