Defining an Institutional Framework for the Labour Market AgEcon
Donnellan, Trevor; Hanrahan, Kevin F.; Hennessy, Thia C..
This paper describes a conceptual framework for the empirical analysis of farmers’ labour allocation decisions. The paper presents a brief overview of previous farm household labour allocation studies. Following this, the agricultural household model, developed by Singh, Squire and Strauss (1986), which has been frequently applied to the study of labour allocation, is described in more depth. The agricultural household model, the theoretical model to be used in this analysis, is based on the premise that farmers behave to maximise utility, which is a function of consumption and leisure. It follows that consumption is bound by a budget constraint and leisure by a time constraint. The theoretical model can then be used to explain how farmers decide to...

Determinants of the Extension of Part-time Farming--Results from a Probit Approach AgEcon
Harsche, Johannes.
This paper presents a Probit model explaining the employment decisions of farmers located in the German State of Hesse. The model is based on a cross-section analysis including data from 74 Hessian farmers. It indicates empirically a strong impact from wages on employment decisions of farmers. It also verifies the importance of the personal type of entrepreneur for their working behaviour. Finally, we can conclude that, regarding working behaviour, farmers react to signals from the labour market conditions as well as to the structural transformation process in the agricultural sector.

An Empirical Investigation of the Impact of Imperfect Information on Wages in Canada AgEcon
Sharif, Najma R.; Dar, Atul A..
Most studies of wage differentials explain such differentials in terms of factors like gender, race, and human capital. But systematic gaps in earnings can arise even among homogenous individuals as a result of asymmetric employer and worker information gaps, thereby reflecting labour market inefficiency. This paper estimates these gaps in terms of wage differentials across various population groups in Canada. We examine 21 populations groups, which include a number of immigrant groups as well. Information gaps are likely to be important in the context of immigrants, especially those new to Canadian labour markets. Our special interest is not only to compare information gaps of immigrant and other population groups, but also to assess whether (and how)...
