Histatin 5 and human lactoferrin inhibit biofilm formation of a fluconazole resistant Candida albicans clinical isolate 42
CURVELO,JOSÉ A.R.; MORAES,DANIEL C. DE; ANJOS,CAMILA A. DOS; PORTELA,MARISTELA B.; SOARES,ROSANGELA M.A..
Abstract:Candida albicans is the most important fungal pathogen that causes infections in humans. Biofilms are hard-to-treat structures due to their high antifungal resistance. Saliva is a fluid that contains antimicrobial substances acting as the first-line of defense against pathogens, and its immune components may be potential tools for the discovery of new treatments against candidiasis. To evaluate the activity of histatin 5 and human lactoferrin against biofilm formation. A fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans clinical isolate was used as the model microorganism. Morphogenesis was evaluated by differential counting. Biofilm quantification was performed by XTT reduction assay. Thickness and topography of biofilms were assessed through confocal laser...

Lactoferrin, chitosan and Melaleuca alternifolia-natural products that show promise in candidiasis treatment 58
Felipe,Lorena de Oliveira; Silva Júnior,Willer Ferreira da; Araújo,Katialaine Corrêa de; Fabrino,Daniela Leite.
Abstract The evolution of microorganisms resistant to many medicines has become a major challenge for the scientific community around the world. Motivated by the gravity of such a situation, the World Health Organization released a report in 2014 with the aim of providing updated information on this critical scenario. Among the most worrying microorganisms, species from the genus Candida have exhibited a high rate of resistance to antifungal drugs. Therefore, the objective of this review is to show that the use of natural products (extracts or isolated biomolecules), along with conventional antifungal therapy, can be a very promising strategy to overcome microbial multiresistance. Some promising alternatives are essential oils of Melaleuca alternifolia...

Bovine colostrum: benefits of its use in human food 116
SILVA,Emerson Gabriel dos Santos Oliveira; RANGEL,Adriano Henrique do Nascimento; MÜRMAM,Lisandra; BEZERRA,Maria Fátima; OLIVEIRA,Juliana Paula Felipe de.
Abstract Colostrum is the first secretion of the mammary gland produced after birth, differentiating itself from mature milk because it has a higher concentration of proteins, immunoglobulins, vitamins, minerals, bactericides (lactoferrin, lysozyme and lactoperoxidase) and growth factors. The use of bovine colostrum for human consumption has been registered for many years in food or in medicinal therapies, and several studies have been conducted with the objective of evaluating its benefits in human food supplementation. The results point to improvements in cases of gastrointestinal, respiratory, inflammation, and bone development diseases, among others. Its commercialization currently takes place in physical or online markets in some countries. However,...
